KONGSBERG to Acquire Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine

Kongsberg Gruppen ASA (KONGSBERG) today entered into agreement with Rolls-Royce plc to acquire Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine, a world leading technology business within maritime operations. The transaction is structured as an acquisition by KONGSBERG of the marine products, systems and aftermarket services businesses carried out by subsidiaries of Rolls-Royce plc. The transaction does not include Bergen Engines nor Rolls-Royce's Naval Business. The parties have agreed a value for Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine of GBP 500 million (on a cash and debt free basis and with working capital at an agreed level). The final purchase price, will be determined based on Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine's cash, debt and working capital at time of completion of the transaction.

NSRP to Host Planning, Production Processes & Facilities Panel Meeting

The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) will host the Planning, Production Processes & Facilities (PPPF) Panel Meeting November 5-6, 2014 in San Diego, Calif. The panel aims to help attendees discover and disseminate best practices related to the principal manufacturing processes, equipment, planning and facilities required to support the fabrication, assembly and testing phases of ship production. Researching and evaluating advanced technologies, tools and materials used during the ship production phase. Examining methods to optimize build strategies and improvements to facilities. Maximizing collaborative efforts with the Ship Design & Materials Panel to fully realize new technologies, tools and processes developed by both panels.

Goff Named NSRP Navy Program Manager

A new NSRP Navy Program Manager  has been selected. Christy Goff, currently at TEAM Subs (PMS 450), will serve as NSRP Navy Program Manager, replacing Connie Bowling, who retired in December after 40-plus years of Department of Defense service. The NSRP Blue Ribbon Panel will be convening the week of January 27-31 to review and recommend the project portfolio for selection by the Executive Control Board next month. The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) seeks papers for presentation at Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers AGM. The NSRP is a collaboration of U.S. Shipyards that focuses on common issues with a goal of reducing the cost of acquiring, operating and maintaining Navy ships. Shipyard Research & Development Projects – NSRP to Grant Awards

The NSRP is a collaboration of American shipyards working together to reduce the cost of building, operating and repairing US Navy ships by developing and applying advanced technology and processes. The projects will be executed through the NSRP Ship Production Panels, a primary program methodology for industry-wide networking, technology transfer and best-practice sharing. The award supports tactical baseline projects that rapidly implement innovative, cost-reducing technologies or processes. The projects awarded align with NSRP’s strategic priorities and major focus areas as outlined in the program’s Strategic Investment Plan.

The Ship Production Symposium, in conjunction with SNAME’s 2012 Annual Meeting, has released a “Call for Papers.” The SNAME 2012 Annual Meeting/Ship Production Symposium will be held October 24‐26 in Providence, RI. Interest areas include ship design processes and technologies; material advancements and technologies; surface preparation and coatings; electrical technologies; planning and production processes; welding advancements and technologies; business processes; information systems; environmental technologies; risk management; human capital and workforce development; and facilities processes. NSRP Solicits White Papers

The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has issued a solicitation for panel white papers. Additionally, the Panel Project Guide, which contains details on the white paper review and selection process, contracting requirements  and formatting guidelines, has been updated to correspond with this solicitation. The deadline for Panel Chairs to submit to SCRA those white papers which have been reviewed and selected by their respective panels is Friday, January 27, 2012. NOTE: deadlines for proposers to submit white papers to Panel Chairs vary -- contact the appropriate panel (listed below) or the NSRP Program Office for further information. SHIPTECH 2012 Call for Abstracts: Deadline Extended

ShipTech 2012 will be held on February 14-15 at the Rosen Plaza in Orlando, FL. Deadline for Abstracts has been extended to October 28th 2011. ShipTech 2012 is currently accepting abstracts for presentations on technology initiatives that improve U.S. shipbuilding and repair efficiencies and reduce total ownership cost through the use of innovative systems, processes or technologies. ShipTech 2012 is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research – Navy Manufacturing Center and the National Shipbuilding Research Program.

NSRP Approves $1.4m in Shipbuilding Program Funds

As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 15 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.4M. The NSRP Executive Control Board allocates funds on an approximately annual basis to fund a portfolio of relatively small, short timeframe projects - one year or less, $100K or less. The Project Portfolio contains summary information on all current and completed NSRP projects. As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 13 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.3m. These projects will be executed under the purview of the 10 NSRP communities of practice known as the Ship Production Panels. Focus and interest among panel members regularly reveal relevant project opportunities which may not be well suited for larger-scale funding via the primary NSRP solicitation process. The Board therefore typically sets aside an amount of money each year to fund relatively small (less than $100K), short-term (12 months or less) projects recommended by the Panel Chairs.

ShipTech 2010, March 9-10

The 13th annual ShipTech event will be held at the Beau Rivage Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi, March 9-10, 2010. ShipTech 2010 is cosponsored by the Office of Naval Research's (ONR) Manufacturing Technology Program (ManTech) and the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NRSP) and is facilitated by the Navy Metalworking Center. Intended for the domestic shipbuilding industry, its supplier base, Navy Program Offices and Navy-sponsored shipbuilding research programs, ShipTech is organized to present research, best practices and what is currently being done to reduce total ownership costs of naval ships while enhancing the competitiveness of the domestic shipbuilding industry.

NSRP New Ship Production Panel

In response to current industry and Navy interest in attacking cost drivers in the electrical aspects of shipbuilding, the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has created the Electrical Technologies Panel. The new panel will provide a collaborative vehicle through which industry and government stakeholders can discuss mutual interests and facilitate technology transfer across a broad range of shipbuilding electrical technology topics, including such areas as electrical testing; construction and design modifications; and process improvements. The Electrical Technologies Panel will be holding their first panel meeting on March 12, 2009 in conjunction with ShipTech 2009 in Biloxi, MS.
