State-run Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand said it will buy a second spot-market shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on Tuesday.The state-owned PTT's Map Ta Phut LNG receiving terminal in the eastern part of Thailand will receive the 65,000-tonne LNG cargo from Malaysia's state oil and gas company Petronas, the Thai state utility said in a statement late on Friday.The April shipment is the second, after the spot-market LNG cargo in December.

Thailand is increasing its planned long-term imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet rising demand after delays to the construction of coal-fired power plants, a senior official at energy ministry said on Wednesday. Energy policy makers have revised their target of LNG imports to 17.4 million tonnes in 2022 and reaching 34 million tonnes a year by 2036, up from earlier planned 23 million tonnes, Twarath Sutabutr, Director-General of the ministry's Energy Policy and Planning Office, told a news conference. "Natural gas supplies in the Gulf of Thailand will drop in the future. Thailand needs to accelerate LNG imports," Twarath said, adding the plan was subject to final approval from the national energy policy committee next month.

Duke Energy Corp has agreed to pay a fine of about $102 million for environmental violations related to a power plant's coal ash spill into a North Carolina river last year and the company's management of coal ash basins in the state. Duke set aside $100 million in the fourth quarter in anticipation of the settlement, the company said in an earnings statement. The U.S. Department of Justice fined the company for five Clean Water Act violations at its Dan River and Riverbend steam stations and four Clean Water Act violations at the company's H.F. Lee Steam, Cape Fear and Asheville electricity-generating plants, according to a company statement on Friday.

Kenya is yet to decide whether to turn east Africa's only oil refinery into an oil storage facility or pay for its upgrade after buying the remaining 50 percent stake from India's Essar Energy, the energy minister said on Friday. Fuel distributors have long complained about the poor quality products from the 50-year-old refinery in the port city of Mombasa and prefer importing cheaper and better imports. Kenya's government has agreed to pay Essar $5 million to buy the Indian firm's half of the refinery after Essar exited the joint venture in November 2013 and abandoned plans for a $1.2 billion upgrade on the advice of consultants who said it was not economically viable.

Turkish shipbuilder Karadeniz Holding plans to send an electricity generating vessel to Gaza to provide urgently needed power in the enclave left reeling by an Israeli bombing campaign that began last month. Karadeniz announced its intentions on Tuesday, shortly after Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said that a power ship - a floating power station - would be sent as soon as Gaza's port facilities had been upgraded. Israel began military operations in Gaza on July 8 in response to rockets being fired into Israeli territory by fighters loyal to Islamist group Hamas. The bombardment has left much of the enclave's already fragile infrastructure in tatters, sparking warnings from the United Nations over spiralling prices and food shortages.

Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard Co (ASRY) has joined forces with UK-based power generation packaging specialist Centrax, to form a joint venture company ASRY-Centrax Ltd, to design and build Power Barges – essentially floating electricity generating power stations. ASRY has designed the barges itself, and will build them on its two large slipways. The initial design is the TPB125 Power Barge, a 125MWe unit based on a standard barge design and outfitted with a pair of Rolls-Royce Trent 60 gas turbines, selling for between $100 to $125 million based on final outfitting factors such as security systems, and the need for amenities such as night vision equipment and helidecks, for example.

According to 'The Japan Daily Press' the Government’s feed-in tariffs have just gone into effect this month , making electricity generated from renewable resources like solar and wind to be sold at higher prices for the next 20 years. Lloyd’s Register has acquired the business and principal assets of the Mumbai-based nuclear risk specialists, Reltech Consulting (Reltech), in a move designed to further strengthen its historic presence in the Indian energy sector. The business and assets of Reltech, which provides safety-management services to a multinational civil nuclear client base, have been transferred to the newly formed LR Scandpower Risk Consultancy Pvt. Ltd., completing another major step in the strategic expansion of Lloyd’s Register’s global nuclear business. Scandpower AS, which provides independent technical risk services to the energy and transport industries, was purchased by Lloyd’s Register in 2009.
