Armed Private Security Guards: Malta-flag Issues Advisory

Shipping Notice 106 to owners of ships registered in Malta is outlined here as an example of one flag-state's action to control the use of private guards. The shipping notice advises that all applications to carry  Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel (PCASP) shall be accompanied by a Voyage Plan and Crew List for the duration of the stay of the PCASP onboard. ii. the provisions of these circulars and shipping notices have been considered and applied: a. MSC.1/Circ.1405/Rev.2; b. MSC.1/Circ.1339; c. Maritime Foundation to Offer STCW Training

Renee Marazon, CEO of The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation, has announced that The Maritime Foundation has been approved by the U.S. Coast Guard to offer Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW training) effective immediately. The STCW training and certification is required for all mariners. The training includes personal survival, personal and social responsibility, basic first aid, and basic firefighting. Resolve Maritime Trains Qatar Firefighters

Resolve Maritime Academy, U.S. - based maritime emergency response training center, graduated seven students from Qatar on November 23. The graduates, who are land-based firefighters, came to Resolve’s South Florida facility for a customized program of marine- oriented fire, hazardous materials and safety courses. The program was organized in cooperation with the National Academy for Professional Training (NAPT) in Qatar. The students attended classes at Resolve Maritime Academy’s Port Everglades, Fla. facilities from October 4 through November 25.

Maritime Education On The Upswing

The pressures - political, financial and environmental -to ensure onboard personnel are skillfully trained at operating increasingly complex vessels is tremendous. Simply stated, vessel owners and operators must employ increasingly advanced training courses - both system- and vessel-specific - as well as general courses, in order to avoid costly accidents and litigation. In just the past few years, mariners have proven these courses work, as the amount of oil spilled into the sea has decreased dramatically. According to the USCG, in 1990, tankbarges moved 72 billion gallons of oil, spilling 992,000 gallons, or one-one millionth of a percent.

Medlink Announces June Training Schedule

MedLink will be hosting two training classes in Newport, RI for the following courses and dates. Enrollments must be received by June 12th and the classes are limited to eight students per class. MedLink’s signature three-day Maritime course teaches assessment and treatment skills for a wide range of medical and trauma situations. This will include American Heart Association certification in CPR and hands-on practice with a number of invasive procedures including wound management, intravenous fluids and medications, intra-muscular injections and more. MedLinks Receives USCG Approval for Training Site

The U.S. Coast Guard has approved MedLink to teach STCW-compliant medical training courses at Colonna Yachts’ megayacht refit yard in Norfolk, Va. In order to receive STCW certification, MedLink had to obtain U.S. Coast Guard approval on the courses’ curriculum, instructors and locations. MedLink offers two medical training courses that meet STCW standards: an 8-hour Elementary First Aid and a 21-hour Proficiency in Medical Care course. Colonna Yachts joins several other sites approved by the U.S. Coast Guard for MedLink’s use, with the facility meeting requirements for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for seafarers.

Silversea and Clipper Sign Contracts with RTM STAR Center

Silversea Cruises Ltd., Fort Lauderdale, and Clipper Cruise Line, St. Louis, have signed training and licensing contracts with RTM STAR Center. STAR Center is a maritime simulation, training, assessment and research facility headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, and is ISO 9001 Certified. Silversea Cruises, an ultra luxury, all-suite cruise line that travels worldwide, will receive training in Bridge Team Management and Elementary First Aid. As part of its commitment to continuing education, Silversea's deck officers will receive extensive practice on STAR Center's 360 degree full mission simulation bridge during the five-day USCG-approved Bridge Team Management course.
