US Marine Consultancy EBDG Expands, Employs Marine Engineers

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) says it has welcomed two new Marine Engineers to its team: William Summers (Bill) in its New Orleans office and Eileen Tausch in its Seattle office. Summers is a seasoned marine professional with more than three decades experience in the offshore and oilfield industry. His varied background encompasses the development and planning of marine engineering vessel modifications and new construction vessel operations. He holds a MBA from Tulane University and a BS in Marine Engineering from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Tausch graduated with a BS in Naval Architecture from the University of Michigan (U‐M) and minored in Electrical Engineering.

Naval architecture, marine engineering & production support service providers Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) apprise that they have appointed marine engineers Nick Bannon to its Seattle office and John T.D. Lair to its New Orleans office. "We're extremely pleased to have both of these gentlemen onboard with us," stated Vice President of Engineering, Brian King. Nick Bannon comes to EBDG with eight years of industry experience including extensive knowledge of coast guard regulations, marine systems and small business practices.

After a quarter of a century, EBDG leads the U.S. ferry market and begins a new journey as a unique employee-owned company. Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) celebrates its 25th anniversary and a successful first year following a management buyout by nearly half its employees. Since EBDG opened its doors it has designed tugs, research vessels, offshore supply vessels, and more vehicle ferries than any other U.S. firm. Brian King, Vice President of Engineering, was one of the first employees hired after the company was founded in 1988.

EBDG: Keller to Manage New Gulf Office

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) welcomes Keith Keller as its Gulf Office Manager for the firm’s New Orleans office, re-opening its doors in early 2012. Getting his start at Avondale Shipyard, Keller has over 30 years experience in shipbuilding and engineering, working with various yards and design firms around the country including Marinette Marine, NASSCO, D3 Marine and most recently STX US Marine. He will be responsible for the development of new business and project management, in addition to hiring a staff of naval architects and marine engineers for the office.

EBDG Becomes Employee-Owned Firm

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) announced that its management and employees have purchased the firm from its parent company, American Commercial Lines (ACL). The transaction closed on December 1, 2011. Following an internal business  review, ACL decided to divest itself of EBDG to focus on its core businesses – inland towing and barge construction. Both EBDG and ACL look forward to working together on future vessel building projects. EBDG is also in the process of re-opening its second office in New Orleans, La. “We effected the management buyout with the goal of growing the firm, pursuing a wider range of projects and having greater flexibility to hire outstanding employees,” said John Waterhouse, Chief Concept Engineer at EBDG.

EBDG Launches Electric Buena Vista Ferry

A new cable-guided electric ferry, designed by Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG), began carrying passengers and vehicles across Oregon’s Willamette River at Buena Vista. The new electric Buena Vista ferry replaces a diesel-powered version which had been in service for more than 50 years. EBDG was chosen to design the vessel, which was built by Diversified Marine of Portland, OR. The new vessel was delivered in May, ahead of schedule, to Marion County, the ferry’s owner and operator. “This ferry has an unconventional propulsion system,” said EBDG Project Manager Mike Complita.

Port Aransas Ferries Begin Service

The first two of a new class of vessels designed by Seattle-based Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) and built for the Port Aransas Ferry Service went into operation on July 1. EBDG was selected by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Corpus Christi District, to prepare the design for this new 160-ft, double-ended ferry serving as a continuation of Texas State Highway 361 across the Corpus Christi Channel, between Port Aransas and Harbor Island. The new vessels, the Michael W. Behrens and the Charles W. Heald, are named for former directors of the transportation department.

EBDG-Designed Sixty Five Roses Enters Service

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) recently announced the launch of the flagship vessel in its series of oil barge designs for Harley Marine Services (HMS). With a length of 422 ft and a beam of 76 ft, the Sixty Five Roses has a capacity of 83,600 barrels. The vessel features a cargo heating system; two hose handling cranes, one of which is a jumbo crane for lifting offshore submarine hose connections and five hydraulic mooring winches designed for offshore mooring systems. EBDG New SNAME Fellows

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) announced that Douglas Wolff and James Cole have been named Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) Fellows. Doug Wolff joined EBDG in 1992 and serves as Vice President of Staff Operations. He has a BS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture and is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Washington, Oregon, North Carolina and Louisiana. For over 30 years, Doug has applied his engineering expertise to new vessel design, modifications and construction liaison. He is one of the firm's workboat experts, having extensive experience designing barges, ATBs, tugs, towboats and research vessels.

Major Ferry Design Projects for EBDG

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) has a number of major ferry design projects in progress with clients from across the country, including many repeat customers. In early 2008 the Texas Department of Transportation (DOT), Corpus Christi District selected EBDG to design a new 28-car ferry for service between Port Aransas and Harbor Island. This short route forms the continuation of Texas State Highway 361 across the Corpus Christi Channel. The multi-phased design effort began with a Design Study Report, which included a hull and superstructure configuration study, propulsion and steering configuration and cost studies, and a capital cost study. Follow-on phases include Contract Design, Bid Support and Construction Liaison.

EBDG Designs Oil Barges for Harley

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) recently announced that it has been awarded multiple contracts to design oil barges ranging in size from 31,500 to 83,000-barrel capacity for Harley Marine Services (HMS) of Seattle, WA. The series of projects began in January 2007 with the contract to design a 38,500-barrel oil tank barge. EBDG completed the design and it was released for bid in May. EBDG to Design Port Aransas Ferry

Seattle-based Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) was selected by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Corpus Christi District, to prepare a design for a new 28-car ferry for service between Port Aransas and Harbor Island. American Commercial Lines Inc. Closes Agreement with Elliot Bay Design Group

American Commercial Lines Inc. (NASDAQ: ACLI) announced that it has closed the previously announced agreement to acquire the assets of Elliott Bay Design Group, Ltd. (“EBDG”) a naval architecture and marine engineering firm. EBDG is located in Seattle, Washington, and has recently opened a second office in New Orleans, Louisiana. The new company, Elliott Bay Design Group LLC, will continue to provide naval architecture, marine engineering and production support to its many customers in the commercial marine industry, while also providing ACL with expertise in support of its transportation and Jeffboat shipyard businesses.

ACL Acquires EBDG

American Commercial Lines Inc has signed an agreement to acquire the assets of Elliott Bay Design Group, Ltd. (EBDG) a naval architecture and marine engineering firm. EBDG is located in Seattle, Wash., and has recently opened a second office in New Orleans, Louisiana. The financial terms of the investment were not disclosed but are not material to the Company. The new company, Elliott Bay Design Group LLC, will continue to provide naval architecture, marine engineering and production support to its many customers in the commercial marine industry, while providing ACL with capability supporting its transportation and Jeffboat shipyard businesses. EBDG was formed in 1987 and has grown to more than 60 architects, engineers, designers, and support personnel.
