HPA Clarifies Stand on Industrial Dispute, Communications to Staff

Hutchison Ports Australia (HPA) says it remains committed to negotiating a resolution to the current industrial dispute with workers in Brisbane and Sydney. HPA also wishes to clarify some of the reporting to date, including the financial challenges being faced by HPA and the process around the text message and emailing communications to staff on August 6. Steve Walker, SBS Worldwide Group Chairman

Logistics company SBS Worldwide worked tirelessly through the weekend to maintain its clients’ supply chains as the devastating hurricane Irene battered the US north east. Early on Monday morning, SBS Worldwide’s New Jersey office was “open for business as usual”, after airports and seaports were closed and road infrastructure was reduced to a honeycomb of flowing water, trees and mud as Irene hit the US east coast over the weekend. Is Your Email Putting You at Risk?

International Transport Intermediaries Club (ITIC) says that shipbrokers run the risk of exposure to substantial liabilities as a result of inadequate monitoring of their email communications. In the latest issue of its Claims Review, ITIC cites the case of a shipbroker acting for a shipowner which had a demurrage claim against charterers. The charter party included a 60-day notification period and a 90-day time-bar for documented claims. The owner passed the full documented claim to the shipbroker, which sent it to the charterer via email on the same day, to the email address specified by the charterer. The shipbroker did not receive any email failure notice or rejection and, on this basis, believed that it had been sent successfully.

SatCom

As technologically advanced as communications have become, the bottom line, particularly for business applications, remains basically the same: the need for clear, reliable and cost-effective means to communicate. Trends in the transmission of data, voice and e-mail from ship-to-shore are much like that of land-based operations. The need for more speed and increased reliability are never ending, and the companies that excel are the ones that not only continually innovate, but those that consistently stay on the front of the curve to deliver real-world technologies that deliver benefits in the unique maritime operational environment. In parallel, price pressures are ubiquitous, as shipowners are keen to exploit every outlet to cut costs and generate revenue.
