GLDD Reports $118.8 Million in New Dredging Contracts

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation has secured several major dredging awards totaling $118.8 million, the U.S.' largest dredging services provider announced on Wednesday.The awarded deepening, coastal protection, and maintenance dredging work includes projects in South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and New York.The Post 45 Contract 4 Charleston Lower Harbor New Work Dredging Project (Capital, S.C., $52.9 million) consists of maintenance and new work dredging of material from the Charleston Lower Harbor to Hugh Leatherman Terminal.

Man, Dog Rescued Near Emerald Isle, NC

The Coast Guard rescued a man and his dog Saturday from a yacht taking on water in Sneads Ferry. Coast Guard watchstanders were notified Saturday the 38-foot yacht C-Lark with a man and his dog aboard was taking on water. A 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water crew launched from Station Emerald Isle at 4:30 p.m. and arrived on scene at  4:57 p.m. The boat crew rescued the man and his dog and transported them to New River Marina at 5:30 p.m. There were no injuries or pollution reported and the owner plans to have the sailboat towed.

Two Saved South of Emerald Isle, NC

The Coast Guard rescued two people from a boat Wednesday taking on water south of Bogue Inlet. Coast Guard Sector North Carolina in Wilmington received a mayday call from two people aboard the 23-foot skiff, Southern Yankee, 12 miles southeast of Bogue Inlet, stating the skiff was taking on water at approximately 9:40 a.m. A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium (RBM) crew from Coast Guard Station Emerald Isle launched at 9:51 a.m. and arrived on scene at 10:17 a.m. The two people aboard the flooded skiff were taken aboard the RBM, and the Coast Guard worked with pumps to keep up with the flooding while towing the skiff to Casper’s Marina in Swansboro. Man Rescued from Liferaft 20 Miles from Atlantic Beach

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 51-year-old Jay White aboard a liferaft Tuesday after the man abandoned his 28-foot sailboat, Dove, 20 miles south of Atlantic Beach, N.C. White contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center watchstanders at approximately 7:15 a.m. via a mayday call on a VHF-FM marine radio stating that his boat was taking on water. USCG: New Officer-in-charge in Emerald Isle, N.C.

The crew of Coast Guard Station Emerald Isle is scheduled to hold a change-of-command ceremony Friday at the station in Emerald Isle, N.C. During the ceremony, Chief Petty Officer Matthew Wolanzyk will relieve Chief Warrant Officer Robert Lepere, who served as the officer-in-charge of Station Emerald Isle since 2010. Station Emerald Isle's missions include search and rescue, recreational boating safety, law enforcement and marine environmental protection. The station is home to 24 active-duty members and 11 reserve members. The area of responsibility for the station includes Bogue Sound, Bogue Inlet, Stump Sound, New River, New River Inlet and the intracoastal waterway via Surf City, N.C.

CG Opens Renewable Energy Center

The U.S. Coast Guard is scheduled to open its first Landfill Gas Renewable Energy Center on April 22, at the Coast Guard Yard, 2401 Hawkins Point Road, Baltimore, Md., as part of its Earth Day Celebration. "As America's Maritime Guardians, not only do we protect the environment through our operations, but we strive to protect the environment in the way we carry out our missions as an organization and as individuals," said Rear Adm. Thomas P. Ostebo, the Coast Guard’s Assistant Commandant for Engineering and Logistics and Environmental Executive. The Coast Guard is seeking to improve the environment by reducing its environmental footprint. Ten years ago the Coast Guard's environmental policies were focused on basic compliance and restoration.
