Two Ships Withdrawn from ETA Charters

The owner of the 53,609 dwt Supramax bulk carrier Paguera and the disponent owner of the 51,215 dwt Papillon, have withdrawn their ships from long-term time charters with Emirates Trading Agency LLC (ETA), a company registered in Dubai. With effect from this month (August), these ships are no longer available to ETA. The 2003-built Paguera and the 2002-built Papillon are both managed by Harpa Bulk Shipping & Management GmbH & Co. KG in Bremen. Harpa is a shipmanagement company specialising in the bulk sector within the Harren & Partner Group in Germany.

ABS Council Adds Members

At the recent ABS Council meeting, 31 prominent members of the shipping and offshore industries were elected as new members of the prominent international classification society. The ABS Council also elected seven new members to the society’s Technical Committee. “Our strength as a classification society is the breadth of experience and depth of wisdom of our membership,” said ABS Chairman & CEO Robert D. ABS Elects Wiernicki to Board

Christopher J. Wiernicki was elected to the ABS Board of Directors by the ABS Council following the Annual Meeting of the members of the international classification society. Wiernicki was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS on January 1. He is also an elected Corporate Officer of the society. Prior to his current appointment, Wiernicki served as President and COO of ABS Europe Ltd, the Division of the society responsible for activities throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Wiernicki has also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for ABS and as President and Chief Operating Officer of ABSG Consulting Inc., an affiliate of ABS and the principal operating subsidiary of ABS Group of Companies, Inc.

West Asia Maritime Signs $33.5M Deal with Mitsui

West Asia Maritime Limited (WAM) has signed an MoU of $33.52M deal with Mitsui & Co, Japan for taking a IHIMU, Japan built geared 56,120 DWT Bulk Carrier under Bareboat Charter with purchase option. The new vessel, which is to be delivered in 1st Quarter 2008, is chartered for 12.5 years and will be trading worldwide for the movement of dry bulk cargoes. This is the first time that an Indian shipping company has taken this route to control with an option to acquire ships. Under the proposed deal, WAM would be getting the vessel for a long period with minimal investment and also have purchase option. WAM can now buy the asset at any time during the charter period at a pre-determined price.
