MISC Berhad (MISC) has taken delivery of its sixth Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) – Seri Elbert, from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. Seri Elbert and her sister vessels - Seri Everest, Seri Erlang, Seri Emei, Seri Emory and Seri Emperor are a series of second generation VLECs – all of which were acquired by MISC from Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical Co. A 40-year-old submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) has completed sea trials and returned to Guam following extensive boiler repairs and testing.During sea trials, the crew, comprising uniformed Sailors and Military Sealift Command (MSC) civilian mariners, participated in more than three days of events and operations at sea to test the readiness of the ship. The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Key West (SSN 722) participated in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Tri-Lateral Submarine Competition (SUBCOMP) exercise in waters south of Japan, which also included participation by a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) submarine, from Sept. 12 to 19. The SUBCOMP exercise provided an excellent opportunity to further the integration and tri-lateral coordination in an Anti-submarine warfare environment for the three navies. This year's SUBCOMP involved four JMSDF submarines, a RAN Collins-class submarine HMAS Dechaineux (SSG 76) and Key West. The competition stressed each crew's ability to conduct various aspects of anti-submarine warfare. The top performer is recognized with the Japanese Battle Efficiency Award.

ABS Chairman, President and CEO, Christopher J. Wiernicki, was honored for his contributions to the maritime industry by the United Seamen’s Service (USS) as a recipient of the Admiral of the Ocean Seas Award on October  28, 2016 in New York. “I am humbled to accept this award, not for me, but rather on behalf of the more than 5,000 worldwide employees of ABS and the 1.5 million mariners who day in and day out keep this industry moving and our global economy expanding,” Wiernicki said. The award is conferred on those who have made noteworthy contributions to the maritime industry.

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) board of directors has elected Kellye Walker to serve as corporate vice president and general counsel and Charles R. “Chuck” Monroe Jr. to serve as corporate vice president, associate general counsel and secretary. The U.S. Department of Defense informs that Vigor Industrial, LLC, of Portland, Oregon, is being awarded a $16,984,940 firm-fixed-price contract for a 120-calendar day regular overhaul and dry docking of USS Emory S. Land (AS 39). Work will include No. 1 and No. 2 boiler inspection, propulsion shaft removal and inspection, underwater hull preservation, ship's service turbo generator five-year American Bureau of Shipping inspection, structural plenums refurbishment, domestic reefer upgrade, five-year ABS tank inspection, and installation of permanent ballast and stability test. USS Emory S. Land's primary mission is to provide repair services to submarines. DoD adds that this contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $23,234,057.

Don Horton of North Carolina started his career on barges during World War II at the age of 10. His father, mother, sister and brothers all worked on U.S. merchant marine coastwise tugs and barges during the war. In 1942 his eldest brother, William Lee Horton, Jr., was killed when a German U-boat attacked his tug, nine miles of the coast of Virginia. The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command accepted responsibility for submarine tender USS Frank Cable Monday, Feb. 1. Cable, which is homeported in Guam, serves as a floating maintenance and logistics facility for Navy submarines. Cable will operate as a commissioned ship with a U.S. Navy captain in charge of a hybrid crew, consisting of 157 civil service mariners and 206 uniformed Navy personnel. Other uniformed personnel will maintain and operate the onboard repair facility. Prior to the transfer, Cable was crewed by approximately 599 Navy personnel plus an embarked repair department that brought the total uniformed number to 1,363. Operating ships with civil service mariners frees uniformed sailors to perform critical jobs in the combatant fleet.

Three months after a massive coal ash spill, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has begun dredging the ashen byproduct of coal-generated electricity from the Emory River using an Ellicott Series 370 "Dragon" dredge. Jacobs Engineering is the prime contractor for this first phase of the project. The Ellicott 370 “Dragon” began sucking up ash from the river April 2, TVA officials said during a news briefing. Crowley Maritime Corporation will enhance its scholarship grants with the Maritime Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport beginning in fall 2009. The company has pledged to increase its donation from $10,000 to $20,000 a year for deserving and need-based students in the program. The increase in funding will allow two students each semester, or four students each year to benefit from the Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship Program. "The Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship has been a fundamental part of our scholarship program at Williams-Mystic since 2003.

Ryamond L. Smith has joined Matson Navigation Company, Inc. as chief operating officer (COO) in San Francisco. As COO, Smith is responsible for all marketing and operations activities, as well as safety, quality and environmental affairs. He reports to Matson President and CEO C. Bradley Mulholland. Smith brings to Matson leadership skills and transportation and logistics expertise, having served as CEO of Fritz companies, United States Fleet leasing Ampent. His most recent position was CEO of Ampent in San Francisco, a start-up company focused on financial supply chain management. Smith has a B.A. in Psychology/Mathematics from the University of Nebraska and an M.B.A from Emory University.

The Coast Guard has concluded it final public hearing this afternoon regarding the sinking of the tug Valour, a 125-foot tug that sank approximately 40-miles east of Wilmington, N.C. Jan. 18, 2006. Coast Guard investigators recalled the crew of the Valour to testify one last time before the investigators submit their findings to Coast Guard District Seven Command in Miami and Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington for review. Facts collected at this final hearing will be developed into a conclusion to be presented in the Coast Guard's final investigative report. Investigators focused their questioning for the six crewmen in three major areas: training, survival equipment and the procedures regarding ballast tanks.

SUNY Maritime College has received a corporate donation of $10,000 from ConocoPhillips Marine to advance Maritime’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) training and educational program. Maritime will make upgrades to its liquid cargo simulator, increase the number of student stations within the simulator and purchase software for use in LNG tanker simulations. The program will also be expanded to include product tanker and crude oil tanker operations and training. A team of naval oceanographers and aerographer’s mates from Fleet Survey Team and Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) located at Stennis Space Center, Miss., are currently aboard USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) during their 2006 Gulf of Guinea deployment. The group's mission is to establish and build relations with the various countries of west Africa by sharing resources and data with local hydrographers and learning from them, as well, for future endeavors.
