Global Supply Lines Struggle to Clear Container Backlog After Suez Chaos

Port of Hamburg Says Containers Are In Good Supply

The Port of Hamburg, responding to reports of bottlenecks in the supply of empty containers, conducted a flash poll this week asking shipping lines about the current situation and found that shipping lines see no appreciable scarcity of equipment in Hamburg and other German seaports, with no shortages expected to arise.According to Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM), the shipping lines mentioned several factors that provide for a stable supply of empty equipment. Most shipping companies plan their disposition of empty boxes about three to four weeks in advance.

New Orleans Receives $1.75 Mln for Port Upgrade

U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administrator Paul “Chip” Jaenichen visited the Port of Greater Baton Rouge’s container-on-barge operation Tuesday while delivering his personal congratulations on the recent awarding of a $1.75 million grant to the Baton Rouge port and the Port of New Orleans. The grant will be used to acquire specialized container loading equipment to increase efficiencies to the current container-on-barge shuttle service operated by SEACOR AMH between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

US Awards $4.85 Mln for Waterways Projects

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx today announced $4.85 million in grants to six Marine Highway projects along the waterways of 17 states and the District of Columbia. The goal of the Maritime Administration’s Marine Highway Program is to expand the use of U.S. navigable waterways to relieve landside congestion, reduce air emissions and generate other public benefits by increasing the efficiency of the surface transportation system. “These grants will help us take advantage of the economic and environmental benefits of one of America’s most crucial transportation assets – our coastal and inland waterways,” Foxx said. Drewry Report Predicts Sustainable Growth for Liner Shipping

Drewry Shipping Consultants, announced that its latest report, “Annual Container Market Review and Forecast 2003/04” highlights that despite economic uncertainty, the war in Iraq and the outbreak of the SARS virus, 2003 will be a good year for liner shipping companies as trade volumes, especially to and from China, register strong growth. The report reports how this year has seen a further recovery in the liner shipping industry as the cargo volume surges experienced in headhaul trades out of Asia in 2002 continued into the first half of 2003. What is more, these containers are being carried at significantly higher freight rates than last year, with Drewry Shipping Consultants projecting total gross carrier income of a record US$106 billion in 2003, up more than 19 percent on last year.

Barge Management System Increases Efficiency

ALK Technologies, Inc. and Midland Enterprises have created a new Barge Management System (BMS) to help Midland increase efficiency and competitiveness. Using the Intranet to tightly integrate communications, business, and systems processes on an enterprise-wide basis, BMS offers a palette of e-commerce functions. Ideas for the system were solicited from Midland departments including sales, finance, transportation, operations, and information systems. Phase II, constituting the detailed design, was completed in early 2000 and Phase III, encompassing delivery and installation, was completed in June 2001. Two primary business goals of BMS are to improve equipment utilization and manage yield potential by analyzing new requests for service.

SynchroSlot Finds The Openings

SynchroNet Marine Inc. launched its SynchroSlot service, which enables customers to inexpensively reposition empty equipment and access incremental revenue generating opportunities. The new service is accessible via customer's existing Internet connections, or if customers prefer the personal touch, by telephone, fax or email. The SynchroSlot service covers all trade lanes throughout the world; assisting container owners to find slots in order to inexpensively reposition empty equipment to demand locations, thus ensuring improved asset utilization. SynchroSlot also enables vessel operators to generate revenue for unutilized space on their vessels.
