Romica Manufacturer Secures DNV GL Approval

U.K. winch maker Romica said it is to “redouble its exports drive” after its Romania-based manufacturing partner successfully acquired accreditation with DNV GL. Yorkshire based Romica is a designer, manufacturer and supplier of lift equipment and winches for use within the marine, renewables, ports and terminals, oil and gas and oceanographic sectors. RINA Launches New Services for Yacht

Protecting Shippers from Ebola Outbreak

The IMO have reacted quickly in response to the international emergency recently declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) over the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. In September the IMO issued an international circular ‘3484’ calling for a united response from the shipping industry to contain the virus. Specifically it calls for ship operators to define 'measures to reduce the risk of exposure' if they are likely to have ships trading to and from ports in Ebola-affected States.

Björn Lagerkvist, 1941 - 2013

It is with deep sadness and regret we report that Mr Björn Lagerkvist, former President of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) passed away on Friday 1 March 2013 after a long-suffering illness. Mr Lagerkvist was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Swedish marine industry association Sweboat in 1975 and attended his first ICOMIA Congress in Oslo that same year – consecutively attending Congress for the next 37-years. GL Accredited for Energy Management Systems Certification

Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has been accredited by DAkkS (Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle), the national accreditation body for the Federal Republic of Germany, to provide worldwide certification of energy management systems according to  DIN EN ISO 50001:2011. GL is among the first certification organisations worldwide to be able to offer accredited certifications according to ISO 50001. A company's energy efficiency and performance can be sustainably improved by implementing systems and processes which conform to the new standard.

Costa Cruises Receives ABB Award

Costa Cruises has received the ABB Energy Efficiency Award 2009 in recognition of its efforts and progress in improving energy efficiency in its motor and drive systems. The prize was presented as part of “Energy Efficiency Award 2009. Designing and achieving energy efficiency: new conversations”, an event promoted and arranged by Abb Sace, a division of ABB Spa, and hosted by Mario Tozzi, an outstanding Italian science divulger. In addition to Costa Cruises’ project, the initiatives implemented by the other two prize-winning Italian enterprises – Fiat Auto and Fiorucci, leaders in the vehicle manufacturing and food industries, respectively – were also illustrated at the ceremony.

Major New Barge Operation

New Accreditations for A&P Falmouth

A&P Falmouth has earned two new accreditations, enforcing its position as one of the country’s leading ship repair facilities. Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI) has certified A&P Falmouth’s operations as conforming to the requirements of BS EN ISO 14001-1996 for environmental management and OHSAS 18001-1999 for occupational health & safety. Trevor Heath, A&P Falmouth’s Quality & General Services Manager, said that the latest certifications – which follow the yard’s achievement of the ISO 9001-2000 standard for quality management in August 2002 – not only makes A&P Falmouth the only ship repair yard in the country to have been awarded all three certifications, but is also a major milestone in the yard’s continuous improvement objectives.

Radio Holland Confirms Deal with Saab TransponderTech

At the Nor-Shipping exhibition held in Oslo in June, the the Radio Holland Group management signed a contract with Saab TransponderTech, for the distribution and service of the Saab R4 AIS system by all Radio Holland Group branches. The R4 AIS is manufactured by Saab TransponderTech AB and is is the fourth generation of Saab AIS. The R4 Class A Transponder System is type-approved with wheelmark and complies with all international standards for AIS ship systems. Saab is also providing free Seagull computer based training software with every AIS system, training seafarers how to use the AIS equipment. Radio Holland Greece has also announce that as of April 20, they have been approved by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance to the quality management system standard BS EN ISO 9001: 2000.
