Weather Data Gathering Project Underway for US Offshore Wind

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have launched an 18-month initiative to gather extensive weather, ocean, and wildlife data near the sites of active offshore wind farms and lease areas off the coast of the Northeast United States.This effort, which is part of the third phase of the Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP3), seeks to gather high-quality data to improve the design and operation of offshore wind turbines and wind farms.

Canada and UAE First to Back Maritime Green Fuel Initiative

Canada and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are among the first countries to back a new initiative aiming to advance the production, export and import of low-carbon fuels for shipping.The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), along with the CEO-led Clean Energy Maritime Taskforce, unveiled the ‘Clean Energy Marine Hubs Initiative’ on Friday at the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) in Pittsburgh. Polish PM Calls For EU Energy Union To End Dependence On Russian Gas

The European Union must create an energy union to secure its gas supply because the current dependence on Russian energy makes Europe weak, Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote in an article in the Financial Times. Russia, which provides around one third of the EU's oil and gas, sent shockwaves through the international community with its military intervention and annexation of Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in March. The action prompted the United States and its European allies to begin imposing sanctions on President Vladimir Putin's inner circle and to threaten to penalise key sectors of Russia's economy if Russia escalates tensions with Ukraine.

Ukraine's Black Sea Gas Ambitions Seen at Risk over Crimea

Ukrainian plans for expanding Black Sea natural gas output have been thrown into doubt by Russia's seizure of Crimea, a region linked to most of Ukraine's offshore developments. Past price disputes between Russia and Ukraine have led to the Russians cutting off supply, prompting Kiev to spur development of its own resources including onshore shale gas and Black Sea fields. Ukraine failed to pay Russian gas company Gazprom $440 million by a deadline on Friday, sparking fresh concerns Gazprom could switch off supplies like it did in 2009. Ukraine's Black Sea push has attracted energy majors as investors, including Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell , ENI and OMV. Promising developments include the Odessa gas field where plans call for output of more than a billion cubic metres of gas by 2015.

ABS Forms Greater China Operating Division

ABS announced a major organizational change with the creation of a fifth operating division that will be responsible for the society’s activities in The People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan. The reorganization takes effect 15 October. The Divisional Headquarters will be located in Shanghai where ABS already maintains a large engineering, survey and administrative office. Adam Moilanen has been appointed President of the new ABS Greater China Division.
