Singapore Trials Charging Point at Marina South Pier

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has launched the first pilot trial for electric harbor craft charging point at the Marina South Pier (MSP).The charging point was awarded to the Pyxis Energy, Pyxis Maritime, and SP Mobility partnership. Pyxis’s fleet of electric harbor craft operating at MSP will serve as the base offtake to ensure optimization of the charging infrastructure.The Pyxis and SP Mobility partnership has deployed a 150kW land-based direct current fast charger with a Combined Charging System 2 connector at MSP.

MSC Cruises Orders Two Cruise Ships from Chantiers de l’Atlantique

MSC Cruises confirmed it exercised options for two new World Class cruise ships from French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered newbuilds, currently referred to as World Class 3 and 4, will be delivered in 2026 and 2027. MSC Cruises also holds an option for a fifth ship in the series.The newly ordered ships will be an evolution of the World Class vessels, MSC World Europa and MSC World America, which already perform better than the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirement.

DMC Inks Deal to Equip Chilean Navy Ships

Wärtsilä has awarded Damen Marine Components (DMC) a contract to provide steering equipment to two Landing Platform Docks (LPD) of the Chilean Navy being built at ASMAR. Fincantieri to Build Hydrogen-powered Cruise Ships for MSC's Explora Journeys

Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri on Wednesday announced it has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Explora Journeys, the luxury travel brand of the MSC Group's cruise division, for the construction of two hydrogen-powered luxury cruise ships.EXPLORA V and EXPLORA VI will feature a new generation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines that will tackle the issue of methane slip and will also be equipped with industry first environmental technologies and solutions, including a containment system for liquid hydrogen that will enable them to use this promising low-carbon fuel.

U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman Mario Cordero addressed the Professional Environmental Management Association (PEMA) at its Annual Ports Program held in Seal Beach, California. The Chairman spoke on the subject of congestion at U.S. ports and the vital role of sustainable development of ports and related transportation infrastructure. Chairman Cordero described causes of, and the need for solutions to congestion, with a focus on the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Chairman Cordero also explained the Commission’s efforts to facilitate discussions among stakeholders.

When Gustaf de Laval read in 1877 an article in the German periodical ”Milchzeitung” (Milk News Paper) about centrifugal separators, he certainly did not expect that it would lead to his founding of a global acting company with around 16,400 employees nearly 140 years later. His first continuous separator, with a capacity of 130 liters per hour, was demonstrated 1879 in Stockholm; and four years later, in 1883, he and his partner, Oscar Lamm, established the company AB Separator.

After months of preparation, the doors of the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center in Aalborg, Denmark are open. Located on the site of the former Aalborg shipyard, this massive ship simulation facility – the largest and most advanced in the marine industry – now adds considerable muscle to Alfa Laval’s research and development efforts. The Alfa Laval Test & Training Center comprises a 250 m2 testing area, built around a 2 MW marine engine and comprising commercial and prototype equipment from all of Alfa Laval’s marine product groups.

Alaska Marine LInes Buys Energy Saving Refrigerated Units

Alaska Marine Lines, a Lynden company providing marine transportation to and from Alaska, is continuing its efforts to work lean and green by purchasing 200 of the most energy efficient refrigerated units in the world. The Star Cool "reefers" achieve the industry's lowest energy consumption by matching the compressor speed to the required heat load of the container rather than running at a single constant speed. In addition, the box and refrigeration equipment are built as one unit with an insulation system designed to minimize energy loss.

Carrier’s Refrigeration Unit for Ships Tops Records

Reflecting the shipping industry’s continued trend in the adoption of energy efficient equipment which reduces lifecycle costs, Carrier Transicold reported that its PrimeLINE® container refrigeration unit has surpassed previous records, selling nearly the same number of units in 2011 as in the prior three years combined. “For four successive years, the PrimeLINE unit has outsold all competitive models, and 2011 – a record year for the industry – accelerated this trend,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold. Appel credited the PrimeLINE unit’s success with its industry-leading efficiency, which responds to the market’s need for more sustainable solutions. Carrier’s ThinLINE® unit, the historic market leader, also surpassed previous-year sales in 2011.

Container Refrigeration Energy Efficiency Yields Good Returns

Reflecting the shipping industry's continued trend in the adoption of energy efficient equipment that reduces lifecycle costs, Carrier Transicold reported that its PrimeLINE® container refrigeration unit has surpassed previous records, selling nearly the same number of units in 2011 as in the prior three years combined. The PrimeLINE unit's exceptional efficiency -- thanks in part to its efficient digital scroll compressor -- significantly reduces on-board power generation requirements, helping shipping lines save fuel used in the generation of electricity. This, in turn, helps hold down operating costs and reduce emissions related to power generation. The PrimeLINE unit reduces carbon emissions 28 percent compared to previous units.
