Vard to Build Cyan Renewables’ SOV for Taiwan’s Offshore Wind Farms

Van Oord Christens Calypso Cable Layer

Dutch offshore installation contractor Van Oord on Saturday held a christening ceremony in Rotterdam for its new cable laying vessel Calypso."The Calypso is equipped with the latest sustainable technologies and will be a key strategic addition to Van Oord’s offshore wind fleet," Van Oord said.The vessel was christened by Ms. Inca Cerutti. She is the wife of Niek Hoek, chairman of the Supervisory Board. After the ceremony, the  christening lady and employees and guests had the opportunity to board the vessel for a guided tour.The Calypso Van Oord’s second cable-laying vessel.

Van Oord Orders 'Green' Cable Layer for Offshore Wind Operations

Dutch offshore contractor Van Oord has ordered a "green" cable-laying vessel from the Norwegian shipbuilder Vard. The ship will be built in Tulcea, Romania and Brattvaag, Norway for scheduled delivery in 2023.The vessel, equipped with the latest sustainable technologies, and expected to be fully operational in 2023, is targeted for deployment in the burgeoning offshore wind market. The new DP2 vessel will be based on the VARD 9 02 design and equipped with a below-deck cable carousel and a second carousel on deck, with a total cable-carrying capacity of 8,000 tonnes.

NYK Builds NGEN Bulk Carrier

Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen (NYK) has concluded a contract with Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) for construction of a next-generation (NGEN) energy-saving bulk carrier.After delivery in 2021, the ship is expected to transport raw materials for JFE Steel Corporation under a long-term charter contract between NYK and JFE Steel.The ship will be a cape-size bulker for trading iron ore and coking coal in and around the Pacific. ABS granted Approval in Principal (AIP) to Neptun Ship Design for its Wind Turbine Transport Vessel design, the first to support transporting parts for turbines greater than 9 Mega Watts (MW).The 178m long Blue Azurit design allows wind turbine manufacturers to produce full length welded towers ready for installation. Elomatic, NYK Group Join Forces to Create Emission-free Cargo Ship

European engineering and consulting company Elomatic has partnered with Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) Group and NYK’s technology arm MTI to create the concept design for a futuristic emission-free pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), – the “NYK SUPER ECO SHIP 2050”.According to Elomatic, compared to current vessels, the NYK SUPER ECO SHIP 2050 will reduce CO2 emissions by 100%. Reach Charters Topaz Tiamat

Norwegian based Reach Subsea said it has entered an agreement with Dubai headquartered Topaz Energy and Marine to charter newbuild light subsea construction vessel Topaz Tiamat for 2.5 years, plus three one-year options.The Norwegian-built vessel will be deployed under a cooperation agreement between Reach and Sweden's MMT. Viikki Delivered to ESL Shipping

Finland’s ESL Shipping, an Aspo Group company, has taken delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled bulker Viikki from the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China.Viikki's sister ship Haaga was delivered on August 20. The 160-meter, LNG-fueled vessel of 25,600 dwt emits over 50 percent less carbon dioxide than the previous generation of vessels.Like its sister ship Haaga, Viikki will first head from the shipyard to Japan, from where it will arrive fully laden at the Baltic Sea approximately at the end of October. The plan is that both vessels will travel to the Baltic Sea via the Northern Sea Route.This shortens the travel time by nearly three weeks compared to the route via the Panama Canal and, therefore, significantly reduces the environmental impact of the trip.

RV Sikuliaq: Modern Electric Propulsion & Power Management

While ships have used electricity to help power vessels for a long time, new and sophisticated diesel-electric technologies are making serious gains in efficiency, noise and environmental impact, and is becoming the propulsion system of choice for some high profile names. A recent case is the diesel-electric powered, RV Sikuliaq (pronounced “see-koo-lee-auk,” an Inupiaq term meaning “young sea ice.”), a vessel embarking on a lifetime of studies in the polar sea region, including examining the effects of climate change and increased human presence in the Arctic.

NAMEPA Members Get Enhanced RightShip Enviro-ratings

North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) says that in recognition of their strong commitment to sustainability its members  have been awarded an automatic positive adjustment (+5 points) towards their vessels’ RightShip Environmental Rating. “NAMEPA is one of only 8 organizations worldwide to secure this high standing in our system” says Warwick Norman, CEO of RightShip. “We believe it is important to acknowledge and reward those who have invested time and effort to operate above compliance, and who demonstrate dedication to environmental sustainability”. RightShip’s Existing Vessel Design Index (EVDI) and GHG Emissions Rating enables charterers to select the most energy efficient vessel.

SAM Electronics Equips Viking Grace

SAM Electronics, an L-3 company, has equipped Viking Line’s new 57,000-gt passenger ferry, Viking Grace, with a NACOS Platinum integrated navigation control system together with a Valmatic Platinum integrated automation system from its associate company, L-3 Valmarine. Built by STX Finland at its Turku yard and designed for cruising the shallow waters of the Finnish and Swedish archipelago, Viking Grace is the world’s largest LNG-fuelled ferry and the most environmentally friendly and energy-efficient vessel of its type. It is due to begin service this January  and will comply with stringent 2015 Baltic regulations on gas emissions.

MOL Initiative to Cut CO2 Emissions from Vessels

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that the company has established a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and started its use with the MOL tanker fleet. The SEEMP provides the most efficient vessel operation method (optimum route selection, appropriate maintenance, and so on considering slow steaming, ocean currents, and weather) to reduce CO2 emissions while ensuring safe operation and maintaining a strict operation schedule. Initially, the SEEMP was initiated by MOL Tankship Management (Europe) Ltd. then provided for all vessels managed by the MOL Tanker Division’s in-house companies effective January 1, 2011 to ensure ongoing improvement in energy efficiency by following the plan-do-check-action (PDCA) cycle.

Alcatraz Cruises Sustainability Efforts Honored

Alcatraz Cruises, the National Park Service concessioner of ferry service to Alcatraz Island, has been awarded the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Award in the category of Best Low Carbon Transport and Technology. Award winners were announced November 11 at the World Travel Market conference in London. Alcatraz Cruises was a finalist alongside the British website Seat61.com and the Swiss Railway company Swiss Travel System. Only one other US company was honored – Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
