New US Pipelines to Drive Natural Gas Boom as Exports Surge
U.S. energy firms are scrambling to finish a slew of pipelines that will unleash rich reserves of shale gas in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio as the nation prepares to become one of the world’s top natural gas exporters. The pipelines are expected to boost output from shale fields in the three states by giving producers access to new domestic and international markets. Those states could supply about a third of all U.S. natural gas once the pipeline expansion is complete, up from about 25 percent now, according to projections from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
NOIA Responds to US Offshore Leasing Proposals
Background: US Department of the Interior released its proposed final 2012-17 US Outer Continental Shelf leasing program that it said makes areas with the most likely recoverable oil and gas resources—including tracts off Alaska’s Arctic coast—available over the next 5 years. “A Five Year Leasing Plan is the most definitive policy action an Administration can take regarding our country’s offshore energy development. Because the federal government completely controls the vast resources of the outer continental shelf (OCS), the five year plan is a greater measurement of an administration’s policy decisions than current energy development seen in abundance on state and private lands elsewhere in this country, which are largely outside the scope of federal decision making.
Project Report: Sheringham Shoal Goes Offshore
On June 24, the first foundation was installed at sea for the Sheringham Shoal offshore wind project. Construction work on land is already well underway, and the 88-turbine wind farm is scheduled to start operation in 2011. The first of 90 monopile foundations was installed off the Norfolk coast by the heavy lift vessel “Svanen”. Over the next nine months, the vessel will install the remaining 89 foundations ready for the mounting of two substations and 88 wind turbines. “On land, we’re already well ahead, the substation is nearing its final form, and the onshore cable is nearly finished.
