Denmark Puts Off North Sea Energy Island Tender Due to High Cost

The Danish government has postponed the launch of a tender to establish a North Sea energy island project due to high costs, the country's ministry of energy said on Wednesday.The project included the construction of an artificial island in the North Sea that would serve as a hub to gather and distribute power generated by surrounding offshore wind turbines.

Belgium's Elia Presents Plans for 'World's First' Artificial Energy Island

Belgium's transmission operator, Elia, has presented its draft plans for what is expected to be the world’s first artificial energy island. The energy island, called the Princess Elisabeth Island, will be located almost 45 km off the Belgian coast and will serve as the link between the offshore wind farms in the second offshore wind zone (which will have a maximum capacity of 3.5 GW) and its onshore high-voltage grid. CIP Proposes to Build Hydrogen Island in Danish Dogger Bank Area

Energy Island: Europeans Mull North Sea Hub

A plan set in motion by three European transmission system operators (TSO) aims to develop mammoth offshore wind farm infrastructure in the North Sea supported by at least one manmade island. First unveiled in June 2016, plans for the North Sea Wind Power Hub project will now press ahead to develop a large offshore renewable European electricity system following the signing of a trilateral agreement by TenneT TSO B.V. (Netherlands), Energinet.dk (Denmark) and TenneT TSO GmbH (Germany) in Brussels on March 23, 2017.

Long Beach Harbor Commissioners Adopt Budget

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved an $829 million budget for the Harbor Department’s next fiscal year, including more than a half a billion dollars for capital improvements at the Port of Long Beach. The budget, which will be presented to the Long Beach City Council for its consideration, designates $555 million for capital investments including the Port’s major terminal redevelopment and bridge replacement projects. For the fiscal year starting Oct. 1, 2015, the budget anticipates a 6.1 percent increase in operating revenue over the current fiscal year’s income.

In his first-ever State of the Port address, Port of Long Beach Chief Executive Jon Slangerup on Thursday unveiled plans for congestion-beating smart systems for cargo movement and an all-out push to achieve energy resilience for port operations with wind turbines, solar cells and other clean technologies. Speaking to an audience of nearly 900 at the Long Beach Convention Center’s Pacific Ballroom, Slangerup summed up the Port of Long Beach’s achievements in 2014 then gave his expectations for 2015 and beyond, setting high goals for himself and the port.

L-3 MSI to Supply Electrical Packages to Biogas Ferry

L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide advanced automation, navigation, communications and electrical propulsion facilities for Samsø Færgen, a new 100-meter, double-ended passenger/car ferry built by Remontowa Shipbuilding at its Gdansk shipyard on behalf of Danish proprietor, Samsø Municipality. Initially LNG-fuelled, Samsø Færgen is reportedly expected to become the world’s first ferry to operate on locally supplied biogas.

Denmark Slated to Get Its First LNG Ferry

Contracts for building the first LNG-fuelled ferry for domestic Danish trade have now been signed, a representing milestone as the ship will be the first LNG-fuelled ferry designed for domestic trade in the EU. October 1, 2014 is the date set for the ferry’s first journey between the island of Samsø and Jutland on the Danish mainland. The new ferry can carry a maximum of 600 passengers and 160 cars. Danish OSK-ShipTech A/S designed the new ferry and has also conducted the EU tender process on behalf of Samsø Municipality.

Australian Wind & Wave Energy Platform a World First

The triangular shaped Energy Island will comprise six oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy devices and an offshore wind turbine assembly and will be capable of generating up to 10 megawatts of power. It is envisaged that six or more Energy Islands may be linked together to create an Energy Farm, which is estimated could supply power to 16,500 Australian households per year. Wood Group Kenny's initial eight-month scope of work under the contract will be carried out in two parts. The first part will involve a data gathering exercise covering a wide range of environmental and technical issues, and the second part will involve conceptual study work to define the layout and configuration of the overall Energy Island assembly.

KEMA Collaborates on Offshore Energy Storage System

KEMA, in partnership with civil engineering firm Bureau Lievense and technology illustrators Rudolph and Robert Das, has developed an “Energy Island” concept to store power generated from an offshore wind farm. The innovative concept design is the initial result of an on-going feasibility study being conducted for Dutch energy companies. The Energy Island designed by KEMA, Lievense and the Das brothers incorporates a new concept in pumped hydro storage – an inverse offshore pump accumulation station (IOPAC). On the Energy Island when there is a surplus of wind energy, the excess energy is used to pump sea water out of the interior ‘subsurface-lake’ into the surrounding sea.
