Improving Propulsion Efficiency: Wärtsilä to Retrofit Ten Hafnia Tankers

Wärtsilä Supplies Energy Saving Propulsion Devices to Vitol Tankers

Wärtsilä has delivered propulsion efficiency devices to two tankers owned by Vitol.The vessels, Elandra Sea and Elandra Star, managed by Latvian operator LSC Group, had tailored Wärtsilä EnergoFlow and EnergoProFin systems installed during summer 2022.EnergoFlow is a pre-swirl stator that creates an optimal inflow for the propeller, reducing fuel consumption and emissions in all operating conditions. The EnergoProFin is an energy saving propeller cap with fins that rotate together with the propeller.

Wärtsilä Prop Solutions Help Optimize Yang Ming Lines Slow Steaming Ops

Wärtsilä will supply its Fixed Pitch Propeller (FPP) and EnergoProFin solutions for two container vessels owned by Yang Ming Lines, the Taiwan-based shipping company, to help the container ship operator maximize efficiency in slow steaming mode.The Wärtsilä solution is designed to enable this adjustment, allowing the speed of the two vessels to be reduced from 24 to 18 knots.The two vessels, the ‘YM Mobility’ and the ‘YM Milestone’, are the last in a series of four Yang Ming ships to be retrofitted with the Wärtsilä FPP and EnergoProFin solutions.

Wärtsilä EnergoProFin Gets Vancouver OK

Marine technology specialists Wartsila’s  energy-saving propeller cap has been included in the 2019 Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s EcoAction Program which offers harbor dues discounts for vessels calling at the Port of Vancouver that meet environmental best practices.The listing is in the vessel quieting category, which awards a 23 percent discount in harbor dues for vessels utilizing this technology. The incentive is given because the reduced cavitation offered by vessel quieting technologies reduces underwater noise.The aim is to encourage shipping companies to lessen their noise levels, since underwater noise affects the at-risk whale population in the Vancouver area of Canada.EnergoProFin incorporates fins that rotate together with the propeller.

GE Tech Enables Shore to Ship Energy Feed

GE Energy Management has signed a contract with French electrical engineering company Cegelec in Brittany, France to supply a complete static power solution for the French Navy. The solution will use GE’s Static Frequency Converters (SFCs) technology to provide high conversion efficiency and a safe and reliable power transfer from the electric power grid to the French naval vessels while in port. “To keep vessels charged fast and on time, the French Navy requires a reliable and stable supply of electricity. GE’s converter technology allows an efficient and secured transition of energy,” said Thierry Bideau, Lead Engineer, Cegelec. The public grid in France operates on a frequency of 50Hz and must be converted for use of electrical systems on board of French naval vessels…

IHC Merwede has launched the first IHC Beaver® 65 DDSP at the company's Sliedrecht shipyard in The Netherlands. The successor to the highly successful IHC Beaver® 6518 is part of the renowned IHC Beaver® series of standard cutter suction dredgers. The new vessel has been designed with a Directly Driven Submerged Pump (DDSP) mounted on the cutter ladder. This feature means that it is possible to dredge at high-mixture densities, as there will be no limitation on the vacuum – even at larger dredging depths.

New Framework for Wind Energy Assessments

Several hundred leading industry figures gathered for the final stage of an initiative launched in March by Lloyd’s List and SMM organisers Hamburg Messe to recognise the technical advances which enable maritime commerce and defence. UNO Researchers Develop Nontoxic Technology Against Corrosion

University of New Orleans (UNO) researcher Al Daech is afraid of heights; not a good phobia to have when your research involves space shuttles, fuel tanks, and other, big, space-age equipment. He's been trying to conquer his fears since 1981. That's when his work on corrosion fighting collided with his fear of heights. As a Martin Marietta (now called Lockheed Martin) consultant, Daech found himself on a narrow bit of scaffolding 450 ft. in the air, inspecting one of the external fuel tanks on STS-I Columbia, the first space shuttle. Three days before the launch, a pool table-size blister formed in the external tank of the STS-I. Daech's inspection showed an oily rag wiped across the tank caused the blister. He and a crew immediately went to work.
