Will the Effort to Reach Zero Emissions Go Nuclear?

On December 8, 1953 President Dwight D. Eisenhower addressed the 470th Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. The speech he delivered is often recognized as his effort to introduce “Atoms for Peace”, a program to move nuclear fission and technology away from weapons development and into clean energy.As a result of that effort and program, the NS Savannah was built and delivered as the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. She was built in the late 1950s at a cost of $46.9 million and launched on July 21, 1959.

Sea Wave Power Stations Contract for SDE Energy

Israel-based SDE Energy Ltd  has signed an agreement with the Conakry government for the development of a 100MW sea wave power plant along the coastline of Guinea Conakry, West Africa. This project is intended to help Conakry become more independent and with a stable power supply that can solve all its energy problems. Due to the high oil prices and the rising costs of electricity, sea-wave energy production has emerged to become today a proper viable alternative for renewable energy production. S.D.E says it is continuing to expand throughout the world. The company adds that it has signed agreements worldwide for the construction of power plants through joint ventures and agreements with companies that are backed by government agencies.

Pelosi: Case Needed for Offshore Drilling

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that expanded oil drilling in federal waters could be included in a broader energy bill if advocates can prove its effectiveness as a solution to 's energy problems. In a television interview yesterday, Pelosi said the oil industry and its allies in Congress also would have to agree to pay royalties on oil profits to fund the development of renewable energy resources. The California Democrat, has previously expressed outright opposition to expanded offshore drilling. Yesterday she said offshore drilling should be discussed but she does not believe it is a workable solution in the short run. Source:  AP

Schlumberger Expands Global Drilling Tech Center

Schlumberger commemorated the opening of a new 53,000-sq. ft. building at its Global Drilling Technology Center located in Stonehouse, Stroud District, Gloucestershire, U.K. The ribbon-cutting event, celebrating the expansion of the facility and the addition of 100 jobs over the past two years, was held on November 11, 2005. “We congratulate our neighbors Schlumberger and we are honored to have their prestigious Global Drilling Technology Center in our midst,” said Mrs. Sylvie Bruce, Stroud District Council Chair. “Schlumberger’s presence in our community has provided professional, technical and support services jobs. Their continued development and expansion of this facility have provided opportunity for construction and trades people as well.
