The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have launched an 18-month initiative to gather extensive weather, ocean, and wildlife data near the sites of active offshore wind farms and lease areas off the coast of the Northeast United States.This effort, which is part of the third phase of the Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP3), seeks to gather high-quality data to improve the design and operation of offshore wind turbines and wind farms.

The 2022 Maritime Risk Symposium (MRS) is scheduled to be held Nov. 15-17, 2022, hosted by Argonne National Laboratory at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois. MRS is an annual international event focused on risks involving the global maritime transportation system (MTS). The United States' Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) on Tuesday announced Karen J. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced that 122,405 acres offshore Kitty Hawk, North Carolina will be offered in a commercial wind lease sale on March 16, 2017. “Today’s announcement demonstrates how our collaborative efforts with Federal, state and local partners over the past eight years have built a foundation to harness the enormous potential of offshore wind energy,” said Secretary Jewell. The Kitty Hawk lease sale is the latest effort in the Obama Administration’s renewable energy program at the U.S. Department of the Interior, which recently marked the operational launch of the nation’s first offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island, and the lease sale for over 79,000 acres offshore New York.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. (HHI), a major shipyard in South Korea, looks set to clinch a deal with Iran to supply 10 ships, says a report in Yonhap. The contract, valued at USD650 million, will see Hyundai supply the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, (IRISL) with four 14,400 TEU container ships and six 50,000 DWT product tankers, the Korea Herald reported. The vessels are expected to be delivered to Iran in the third quarter of 2018. If signed, the contract will be Iran's first deal with a foreign shipbuilder since the lifting of international sanctions on the Middle Eastern nation. Iran is seeking a series of ship-related contracts via the IRISL to handle increasing trade cargo. Yonhap reported that Hyundai officials were cautious about the matter.

The Obama administration on Thursday unveiled new oil well control rules to prevent the kind of blowout that happened six years ago on a BP Plc rig in the Gulf of Mexico. The Interior Department's Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement announced the finalized regulations, which include more stringent design requirements and operational procedures for offshore U.S. oil and gas operations. The new standards come nearly six years after a deadly explosion and fire on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig off the cost of Louisiana, which led to the worst oil spill of all time.

Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Director Abigail Ross Hopper today announced Mike Celata as the Regional Director of the Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Region. Celata, who starts his position immediately, has been with BOEM and its predecessors since 1988. He has been acting Regional Director since March. Iran is expecting American shipping lines to visit its ports once the economic sanctions against it are lifted in light of the emerging comprehensive final agreement over the Iranian nuclear energy program, reports Press TV. Iranian deputy minister of road and urban development Mohammad Saeednejad, who also heads Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization, said American shipping lines may return to Iranian ports after the removal of Western economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic. “We are currently holding weekly meetings with European shipping lines over their return to Iranian ports,” said Saeidnejad. “We believe that American shipping lines will also return once the economic sanctions against Iran are lifted”.
