MOL's Propeller Boss Cap Fins earns Guinness World Record Title

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that its Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF), sold by its group company MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. was certified as the “Best-selling Energy-Saving Ship Appendage Brand (Cumulative)”, by Guinness World Records, and received the official certificate on December 23, 2021.This award is based on the cumulative 3,748 PBCFs sold (the sales record with 3,516 vessels including twin-screw vessels equipped with PBCF) as of the end of December 2020.PBCF was co-developed by MOL, West Japan Fluid Engineering Laboratory Co., Ltd., and Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd.

China Launches Energy Efficient VLCC

Wartsila, Grimaldi Cut 3.5% Fuel Bills

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä,  the Netherlands based Maritime Research Institute MARIN and Italian ship owner Grimaldi, have together successfully designed an Energy Saving Device (ESD), suitable for use by ships with Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs)."Following model tests, and subsequent sea trials with Grimaldi’s ‘Grande Portogallo’, a 165 metres long Pure Car & Truck Carrier, fuel efficiency gains of 3.5 percent were confirmed," said a press release from the engineering company. MOL Techno-Trade in Green Initiative

Lines (MOL) announced that its group company MOL Techno-Trade has joined a Green Award Program aimed at promoting high-quality shipping.The program is run by the nonprofit Green Award Foundation, which was established with the objectives of protecting the marine environment and enhancing safe operation.The program aims to improve the quality of vessels and mariners and protect the marine environment by certifying vessels for excellence in safety and low environmental impact. SHI Wins Order for LNG Carrier Pair from Celsius Tankers

South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries(SHI) has won a new order to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers from Copenhagen-based Celsius Tankers.The shipbuilder said the first order for two 180,000 cbm LNG Tankers is worth 419 billion won (USD376mln). Moving Ahead Powerfully

The layout of ship propellers is a balancing act between optimal power conversion and the avoidance of unwanted cavitation effects, which can result in damage to the propeller structure and higher noise levels. MAN Diesel & Turbo in Frederikshavn, Denmark, is using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation solution STAR-CCM+ from Siemens PLM Software to model cavitation and optimize ship propellers. Two mid-size container ships of 8,500 TEU – CSCL Europe and CSCL America – will be upgraded by retrofitting a efficient Kappel propeller.

MOL Rolls Out Refined PBCF

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has announced that its group company MOL Techno-Trade will start selling an upgraded version of its energy-saving Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF). MOL Techno-Trade has sold more than 3,100 PBCFs to ship owners all over the world. The new type of PBCF was jointly developed by MOL, Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen), and MOL Techno-Trade. The new design enhances propeller thrust and reduces torque thanks to refinements in fin shape and height. Tests of the new type PBCF on vessels in service confirmed an energy savings of around 5% compared to sister vessels not equipped with PBCF. The previous design showed an estimated 3% energy savings. The new PBCF design has already been patented around the world.

Vancouver Port Selects “PBCF” as Equipment Designated

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. today announced that Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) was selected as a vessel quieting technology by the EcoAction Program implemented by Port of Vancouver, Canada. PBCF was jointly developed by MOL, West Japan Fluid Engineering Laboratory Co., Ltd. and Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd. (Note 1), and is being sold by MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s EcoAction Program offers discounted harbour due rate to vessels that have implemented voluntary emission reduction measures and other environmental practices. As of January 1, 2017, vessels equipped with PBCF and transiting to the Port of Vancouver will be eligible for bronze level recognition and a 23% discount in harbour dues.

Hull Vane on New Patrol Vessel for Port of Rotterdam Shipyard Kooiman recently started building a new 25-meter patrol vessel for the Rotterdam Port Authority. The vessel will be delivered in the summer of 2017. The order followed a public tender process in which several shipbuilders competed with their designs. The design incorporates several innovations to improve the efficiency. Public tender The principal focal points in the tender were the vessel’s complete life-cycle costs, a minimal amount of emissions and a minimum of wave formation.

Wärtsilä EnergoProFin for CPP, FPP

Wärtsilä EnergoProFin is a state-of-the-art energy saving solution that increases propeller efficiency and creates fuel savings of up to five percent. The solution is now available for both controllable pitch propellers (CPP) as well as fixed pitch propellers (FPP), yielding the same results in both propeller options. Offering the solution for technologically more challenging CPPs was previously considered impossible in the industry, but is now made possible due to development work by the Wärtsilä hydrodynamics team. The Wärtsilä EnergoProFin is a specially designed propeller cap with hydrofoil section fins on the downstream side of the propeller. It is an innovative energy saving device that can significantly reduce a vessel's fuel consumption as well as its emission levels.

New Appointments at Becker Marine Systems USA

Mr. Rhoades will have the role of Northeast Sales Representative and will be based in Pennsylvania. Evergreen Orders Ten Boxships

Evergreen Group signed an agreement with CSBC Corporation, Taiwan to build ten 2,800 TEU class B-type vessels. Witnessed by Evergreen Group's Second Vice Group Chairman Bronson Hsieh, the contracts were signed by EMC Chairman Anchor Chang and CSBC Chairman Sun-Quae Lai. The first ship will be delivered during the second half of 2017 with the completion of the series due by the first half of 2018. The vessels will be deployed in the intra-Asia trade. Bronson Hsieh said, "After the negotiations of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) are concluded, the ASEAN countries, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand are expected to remove trade barriers, enhancing bilateral trades and thereby boosting regional cargo growth.

Great Ships of 2014: Linda Oldendorff

 First of Six 208,000 dwt bulk carrier HHI built

The 208,000 DWT Bulk Carrier Linda Oldendorff built at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) was delivered to Oldendorff in Germany on September 30, 2014. It is the first in a series of six. The vessel has flush deck with forecastle, bulbous bow, transom stern, single rudder (full-spade) and single screw propeller directly driven by a slow speed diesel engine. It measures 300 x 50 x 25m, with a 16-m draft. The vessel has nine cargo holds and was constructed as single hull with hopper sided double bottom and topside wing.

ReFRESCO: Understanding & Designing Energy Saving Devices

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), new insights can be obtained into the working principles of Energy Saving Devices (ESDs), which all serve to increase the fuel efficiency of a ship. The advantages of using ReFRESCO to study ESDs are explored in this article. The capability of simulating different moving objects, and their interaction in on calculation (applying the so-called Sliding Interfaces Technique) has increased the range of applications of the viscousflow CFD code ReFRESCO.

Underwater PBCF Installations Bring Fuel Savings

Last month Hydrex installed  Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) on two tankers during their respective stops in Ghent and Antwerp. As a result of the underwater operation, the ships will not have to wait for their next drydock visit to start benefitting from the fuel savings the PBCF’s will bring them. The Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) is a device for propeller efficiency improvement developed by Mitsui O. S. K. Lines, Ltd. The PBCF can recover energy loss of a propeller hub vortex in the propeller’s backward flow.

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) completed and delivered a 72,800dwt type Open Hatch Jib Crane General Cargo Carrier M.V. Petrel Arrow (MES Hull No. 1838) at its Chiba Works to Gearbulk Shipowning Limited, Bermuda on July 25, 2013. Petrel Arrow is the third vessel of its series which has a large cargo hold capacity of more than 86,600 cubic meters with eight box-shaped cargo holds. -The Vessel is one of the largest open hatch general cargo carriers in the world with eight box-shaped cargo holds and four jib cranes for handling cargo.

Euronav Reports Earnings; Pushes Fuel Economy

Belgium's Euronav reported a net loss of US$ 31-million in its Q4 2012 financial report. The result of the fourth quarter is affected positively by the revaluation at marked-to-market levels of non cash items (unrealized) such as hedge instruments on interest rates for a total of US$ 600,000. After successfully implementing a strict slow and super slow steaming policy whenever possible, Euronav continues to apply measures to reduce fuel consumption across its spot fleet. The company has already retrofitted a VLCC, with a Mewis Duct, improving propeller efficiency, which demonstrated to be the most efficient energy saving device. The same retrofitting will be done on at least 4 Suezmax vessels this year.

Almi Sky

Almi Sky was built for Almi Tankers S.A. by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, designed as double skinned construction in way of cargo tanks and arranged with six pairs of cargo tanks and a pair of slop tanks.
