A newly built wood chip carrier vessel recently delivered to Japanese shipping company NYK is equipped to collect ocean microplatics for researchers to study.The Stellar Harmony, built by Imabari's Iwagi Zosen Co., Ltd shipyard, was officially handed over on August 23. The vessel will transport wood chips mainly from New Zealand, Australia, North America and South America under a long-term contract between NYK and Marusumi Paper Co., Ltd.Once in operation, the ship will pump in seawater along its routes to collect microplastics floating in the ocean.

Caterpillar Marine said it has been selected to be the power solutions provider for Edda Wind’s four new commissioning service operation vessels (CSOV) being built at Astilleros Gondán and two new service operation vessels (SOV) to be built at Astilleros Balenciaga shipyards in Spain. The series of vessels six will be delivered in 2022-2024.Of the six confirmed units, the first four in the series have been contracted to work on offshore wind farms under long-term agreements with Ørsted, Vestas and Ocean Breeze.

Wilhelmsen, one of the world's largest shipping companies, has agreed to acquire a 25% stake in Østensjø Group’s growing offshore wind business Edda Wind.Wilhelmsen has also secured an option to buy another 25% before June 2021. Østensjø Group's offshore wind business Edda Wind has signed long term time charter deals with MHI Vestas and Ocean Breeze Energy respectively for two of the four offshore wind vessels ordered from Spanish yards. The charter agreement with MHI Vestas for a newbuild Service Operation Vessel (SOV) will start in the second quarter of 2022 and has a firm period of 15 years.The charter agreement with Ocean Breeze will start in the first quarter of 2021 and has a firm period of 11 years.

Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that the new scrubber-equipped wood chip carrier Southern Treasure has been delivered.The delivery ceremony for the 60,300 dwt vessel with with a cargo capacity of 4.3 million-cubic feet was held at Oshima Shipbuilding, Nagasaki Prefecture.MOL will operate the vessel, which transport wood chips for Hokuetsu Corporation, said a press release."The vessel is equipped with a SOx scrubber and Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) to comply with today's stricter environmental regulations," said the release.It features Oshima Shipbuilding's technologies such as Seaworthy Bow (a bow shape that reduces the decline in vessel speed during adverse weather)…

Aiming to meet increasing demand in the offshore wind market, Norwegian owner Østensjø Rederi said it has signed a letter of intent (LOI) for the construction of four commissioning service operation vessels (CSOV) to be built at at the Astilleros Gondán shipyard in Spain for delivery from 2022.Designed by Salt Ship Design in Norway, the 88.3-meter-long vessels will be utilized for service operations during the commissioning and operation of offshore wind farms. The shipping and logistics company NYK (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha) has concluded a long-term contract with Mitsubishi Paper Mills Limited for a new wood-chip carrier to be built by Oshima Shipbuilding Co. South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) booked an order from Denmark’s  Celsius Tankers for two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, securing an option for further two vessels.A press release said that SHI won a newbuilding contract for two 180,000㎥ LNG carriers from a European shipowner Celsius Tankers. The price is 187 million USD per vessel. The LNG carriers would be equipped with Mark-Ⅲ Flex type containment system with re-liquefaction to lower BOR. The push to outfit commercial vessels with energy saving equipment continues, and news out of Japan says that a Mitsubishi Energy Recovery System (MERS) supplied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME) was installed on a VLOC (Very Large Ore Carrier) for the first time. The system is designed to enhance power generation efficiency by maximizing recovery and utilization of exhaust gas waste energy from marine diesel engines, and demonstrated significant fuel consumption improvement compared with existing ships during at-sea trial.

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding was contracted to build two “Neo Supramax 66BC” ships, which are next-generation 66,000-dwt bulk carriers developed as low fuel consumption, eco-friendly ships. Keeping the usability of MES’ best selling 56,000 dwt type handymax bulk carrier (Mitsui 56) which achieved more than 170 contracts, this new and larger bulk carrier is expected to establish a new segment in bulk carrier market. Development of the ship’s design was preceded by hearings from various owners and operators and investigations on more than 600 ports worldwide.
