Caterpillar Marine said it has been selected to be the power solutions provider for Edda Wind’s four new commissioning service operation vessels (CSOV) being built at Astilleros Gondán and two new service operation vessels (SOV) to be built at Astilleros Balenciaga shipyards in Spain. The series of vessels six will be delivered in 2022-2024.Of the six confirmed units, the first four in the series have been contracted to work on offshore wind farms under long-term agreements with Ørsted, Vestas and Ocean Breeze.

Østensjø Group's offshore wind business Edda Wind has signed long term time charter deals with MHI Vestas and Ocean Breeze Energy respectively for two of the four offshore wind vessels ordered from Spanish yards. The charter agreement with MHI Vestas for a newbuild Service Operation Vessel (SOV) will start in the second quarter of 2022 and has a firm period of 15 years.The charter agreement with Ocean Breeze will start in the first quarter of 2021 and has a firm period of 11 years.

Pacific International Lines (PIL), Singapore’s leading containership operator, announces two upgraded weekly services on the Far East – Red Sea service route. Done in collaboration with Ocean Alliance, the routes named RSS and RES will commence operations in March 2018, superseding the current three services RSS, RS3 and RS5. The route will be operated with a series of 17 x 11,000 to 14,000TEU vessels including its latest newbuilds, the 11,923TEU P Class in the service. The highly efficient and versatile P Class were purpose-built for Red Sea, with a ballast water treatment system fitted onboard and various energy saving measures implemented in its design. The enhanced Red Sea service will extensively cover North Asia and South East Asia with direct connections to the main Red Sea markets.

Skangas and ESL Shipping have entered into an agreement for providing gas fuel to ESL’s LNG-powered bulk carrier newbuildings. These two new vessels will start operating during first half of 2018. The first of the two vessels was named “Viikki” in June 2017, honoring the shipping company’s tradition to name its ships for places in Helsinki. “This agreement is a milestone for Skangas. Ms Viikki will be the first vessel that we will serve from the new LNG terminal in Tornio”, explains Kimmo Rahkamo, CEO of Skangas. “There will be more to come. This is supported by ESL Shipping. “Our new vessels are full of innovation, and they are pioneers in eco-friendliness and transportation efficiency,” says Mikki Koskinen, Managing Director of ESL Shipping.

Foreship has appointed Jan-Erik Räsänen as its Head of New Technology effective from March 1, 2017. The Head of Class: Christopher J. The global maritime industry faces myriad challenges in the ongoing quest to run safe, profitable operations in an oftentimes tumultuous environment. More than ever vessel owners are faced with daunting regulatory and technical challenges, and the world’s leading classification societies remain the foundation upon which successful marine operations are built. Last month we visited with Christopher J. Wiernicki, the head of ABS and the newly elected head of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), for insight and analysis.

Norwegian tanker shipper Odfjell announced it is upgrading the propulsion systems aboard 19 of its chemical tanker vessels in a move that aims to reduce its fuel consumption and emissions by up to 20 percent. The upgrades, which include the retrofit of new energy efficient propeller blades and rudder-bulbs, as well as technical improvements to the ships’ main engines, turbo chargers and shaft generators, will place Odfjell’s vessels among the most energy efficient chemical tankers in the world, the shipper said.

Only about one third of shipping companies were aiming for energy savings of 5 percent or more, suggests the new DNV GL Energy Management study. It is based on the input of 80 shipping companies and includes ship managers, owners and operators in 24 countries. Although energy saving enjoys a high priority within most of the companies questioned, with three quarters of the participants naming fuel savings as a topic of high importance, in many cases shipping companies have not formulated ambitious savings targets.

Community leaders were on hand to view this first vessel ‘plug in’. The initial test of ‘plugging in’ a vessel is critical to assessing the performance of this new and very high voltage shore power system. It is also vital to ensuring all trained units including ILWU and ship operators become comfortable with operating the gear.

The initial test of ‘plugging in’ a vessel is critical to the assessing performance of this new and very high voltage shore power system. It is also vital to ensuring all trained units including ILWU and ship operators become comfortable with operating the gear. The process tests the vessel’s ability to synchronize with and connect to the Port’s grid-based system.

Scheduled for September 23-24, 2013 in Hamburg, the fourth STG Ship Efficiency conference will focus on one of the key issues for future shipping.
