Keel Laid for Finnlines’ Second Hybrid RoRo Ship

The Nanjing Jinling shipyard in China has laid the keel for the second of three new hybrid ro-ro vessels it is building for Finnlines.The construction of MS Finneco II is proceeding, and the keel laying ceremony was held on May 12, Finnlines said.The vessel is part of Finnlines’ €500 million ($607 million) newbuilding program which includes two eco-sustainable ro-pax vessels in addition to the three hybrid ro-ro vessels.“Finnlines has made major investments in renewing and developing its fleet into more sustainable, using the latest technologies and green innovations available.

Finnlines' First New Hybrid RoRo Launched

Finnlines’ first of three new hybrid ro-ro vessels was launched at the Nanjing Jinling Shipyard in China on Monday. The vessel, Finneco I, will start sailing on the Finnish shipping company’s Biscay–North Sea–Baltic Sea service at the turn of the year. The series’ second and third vessels, Finneco II and Finneco III, will be delivered in 2022.The new vessels are 238 meters long with a cargo capacity of 5,800 lane meters. Additionally, car decks have a capacity of 5,800 square meters and about 520 TEU on the weather deck.

Cargill, Maersk Tankers Launch Bunker Procurement Service

Cargill and Maersk Tankers are aiming to unlock more competitive and transparent bunker pricing and improved customer service through a new strategic partnership combining their bunker volumes, offering a new bunker procurement service to tramp shipping companies and trading houses. Becker Intros New Sail Tech

Hamburg-based Becker Marine Systems is now taking another step forward – wind operated vessels."We will see different hybrid systems on board vessels in the future. There will be ships and services where sailing provides a real option for supporting propulsion," said Henning Kuhlmann, Managing Director of Becker Marine Systems.Becker is developing a highly efficient wing sail, which will generate significant forward thrust on commercial vessels. The operational profile of the vessel will have to be adapted and weather routing is an important part of it, but for long range operation, using wind as a "fuel" source will significantly reduce a vessel's fuel consumption.The key partner for this development is Wallenius Marine.

Mitsubishi, Wärtsilä Joins for Improved Power and Propulsion Solution

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment Co., LTD (MHI-MME) and the smart technology group Wärtsilä have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the commercial marketing of a new energy solution for ships. The solution combines innovative technologies from both companies to produce greater power generation capacity and higher propeller propulsion for marine vessels. By integrating MHI-MME's waste heat recovery and energy saving power generation system (WHRS) with Wärtsilä's operational control technology for shaft generator systems, the new solution results in more energy efficient ship navigation and an improved Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).

Becker Marine Systems Eyes Growth in Asia

Becker Marine Systems says it is continuing its successful entry into Asian countries such as China, Japan and South Korea, despite an ongoing crisis in the shipbuilding industry. Now the Hamburg-based company is opening a branch office in Kobe, Japan, and has formed a manufacturing partnership with Murakami Iron Works for producing containership rudders. Becker Marine Systems has had a presence in the Asian maritime industry for decades. Recently the company delivered the largest flap rudder in the world.

Hybrid Ferry uses Energy Storage System from Corvus Energy

Scandlines has named their newest hybrid ferry, the M/V Copenhagen. As part of Scandlines’ ambitious environmental strategy, the new hybrid ferry will join the world’s largest fleet of hybrid ferries, utilizing a low emission and fuel saving diesel electric hybrid propulsion system powered by a Corvus Energy ESS (Energy Storage System). The M/V Copenhagen is the sixth Scandlines hybrid ferry to utilize a Corvus ESS. This new hybrid ferry will soon join its sister ship M/V Berlin, also powered by a Corvus ESS, in servicing the crossing between Rostock, Germany and Gedser, Denmark. The M/V Copenhagen is 169.5m long and 25.4m wide, providing double the capacity for vehicles (460 cars or 96 transport trucks), and the modern, spacious onboard facilities have enough space for 1,300 passengers.

Scandlines’ New Hybrid Ferry Named MV Copenhagen

The second of Scandlines’ two new hybrid ferries for the Rostock-Gedser route was named M/V Copenhagen during a ceremony at the Danish shipyard FAYARD A/S on October 28, 2016. In his speech to the some 180 guests in attendance, Thomas Andersen, CEO of FAYARD A/S, thanked Scandlines for the confidence which the shipping company has shown the yard and he compared the new ferry with Hans Christian Andersen’s ugly duckling that finally turned into a beautiful swan. 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct to Be Presented at Nor-Shipping

Hamburg-based Becker Marine Systems will present its 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct in Oslo at Nor-Shipping 2015. The use of all ducts previously delivered will have lowered CO2 by more than 1.4 million metric tons. The Becker Mewis Duct has not been a successful product for Becker Marine Systems alone, the company said. It is also contributing towards the global objective of enhanced sustainability in the shipping industry. The Becker Twisted Fin is also being presented at the trade fair.

WWL Launches Post Panamax Vessel

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics launched the first of its new generation of Post Panamax HERO (High Efficiency RoRo) PCTC vessels, M/V Thermopylae. The Thermopylae was built at the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries shipyard in Mokpo, South Korea, and her maiden voyage will be from Asia to Europe, starting in the port of Hitachinaka, Japan and finishing in Bremerhaven, Germany. The vessel is the first of eight HERO post panamax vessels that will commence service for WWL from 2015-2017. Measuring 199.99 m long and 36.5 m wide, Thermopylae features five liftable car decks, allowing for more configurations for cargo of various sizes and hence increased capacity for cars, trucks, equipment and breakbulk.

TNO, Imtech to Partner on Research and Development

New Fixed Pitch Propeller Design from Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä introduced the FPP Opti Design, a new fixed pitch propeller (FPP) design concept. According to Wärtsilä, the new design offers fuel savings of up to 4 percent and highly reliable full scale performance predictions. The concept has been developed utilizing the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. The Wärtsilä FPP Opti Design has been developed at the company’s Technology and Service Centre in the Netherlands, and is the result of highly experienced design engineers having access to the very latest and most sophisticated software and analysis tools. CFD calculations analyze not only the propeller performance but most importantly also, the interaction between the propeller and hull.

STX Turku Shipyard Delivered a Cruise Ferry

On Thursday 10 January 2013, STX Finland Oy’s Turku shipyard delivered a next-generation cruise ferry to Viking Line ABP. Building of the environmentally friendly M/S Viking Grace started at the STX Turku shipyard in September 2011 and the ship was floated out in August 2012. The ship provided some 2,600 man-years of labour to the shipyard. M/S Viking Grace will enter traffic on the Turku (Finland) – Åland Islands – Stockholm (Sweden) route on 15 January 2013. M/S Viking Grace is the most environmentally friendly large cruise vessel ever built, using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel. The ship’s emissions into the sea have been eliminated, and emissions into the air are remarkably lower than those of any other large passenger ships.

ABB: Onboard DC Grid Breakthrough

ABB secured a first order for its Onboard DC Grid concept, which was launched in May 2011. The company is to equip a newbuild Platform Support Vessel (PSV), ordered by the Norwegian owner Myklebusthaug Management from the Kleven shipyard in Ulsteinvik, Norway, with a full Onboard DC Grid system, including all power, propulsion and automation systems. The 93m long, 4,800gt type MT 6015 PSV, a multipurpose oil field supply and construction vessel designed by fellow Norwegian company, Marin Teknikk, is due for delivery in the first quarter of 2013. Heikki Soljama, head of ABB’s business unit marine and cranes, says: “Myklebusthaug was keen to build an innovative vessel that was ready to accept future energy saving solutions, including energy storage and renewable energy sources.

The Finland-based AC drives manufacturer Vacon strengthens its global presence by opening a subsidiary in Australia. The grand opening will take place on March 15 in Melbourne, and the inaugural speech will be given by Mr Glen Lindholm, Finland's Ambassador to Australia.
