Bureau Veritas (BV) said it has been working with GILLS PTE LTD in Singapore to assess the performance of its air lubrication system designed to improve ship efficiency and decrease fuel burn by reducing the drag of an underwater hull. GILLS, which stands for gas injected liquid lubrication systems, deploys NACA profiles to create self-generating micro-bubbles for ‘turbulent modulation’ which has a ‘hull-tightening’ effect, reducing drag and energy requirements. The world leading shipping group CMA-CGM has fitted its largest containership, the 18,000 TEU Vasco de Gama, with a 2,000 cu.m/h Bio-Sea 2000 Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) supplied by French ballast water treatment specialist Bio-UV. The Vasco de Gama is equipped with the latest environmental technologies, and the BIO-SEA2000 BWTS representing therefore one of the greenest goods transport means in the world. The Bio-Sea system uses filtration and high power UV to treat ballast water without requiring any chemicals. The U.K.-flagged Vasco de Gama has a length of 399 m and beam of 54 m. Delivered July 27 by China State Shipbuilding Corporation, it is thus largest containership ever delivered from a Chinese shipyard.

Rolls-Royce won a contract to supply its Promas propulsion system for two new car and truck carrying ships which are being built in Korea for Neptune Lines. Promas is an integrated propeller and rudder system that increases efficiency and manoeuvrability. The vessels, to be built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co (HMD), will also feature steering gear and deck machinery from Rolls-Royce. Maersk Londrina is a 8700 TEU containership built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., LTD (DSME) for A.P. Moller - Maersk A/S. According the shipbuilder, one of the biggest challenges during construction was to increase the height of the accommodation by 9m in order to achieve the carrying capacity of 8,700 TEU from 7,450 TEU for the previous vessels. In spite of the difficulties of this kind of big modification during construction, the conversion was successfully completed and satisfactory to the shipowner.

A Grundfos project aboard a Lauritzen Bulkers cargo ship shows that large vessels could be losing money on wasted energy. A pilot project between Grundfos and Danish shipping operator Lauritzen Bulkers shows that better technology and a sharp focus on pump efficiency can mean big savings on the bottom line. The project, carried out on the 19,889-ton Durban Bulker, focused on efficiency in ship’s pumps. “Ships often use oversized pumps that consume too much power,” says Kim Kirkegaard, Business Development Manager at Grundfos. The project paid off.

Costa Cruises has received the ABB Energy Efficiency Award 2009 in recognition of its efforts and progress in improving energy efficiency in its motor and drive systems. The prize was presented as part of “Energy Efficiency Award 2009. Designing and achieving energy efficiency: new conversations”, an event promoted and arranged by Abb Sace, a division of ABB Spa, and hosted by Mario Tozzi, an outstanding Italian science divulger. In addition to Costa Cruises’ project, the initiatives implemented by the other two prize-winning Italian enterprises – Fiat Auto and Fiorucci, leaders in the vehicle manufacturing and food industries, respectively – were also illustrated at the ceremony.
