At the Sea Tech Week Maritime Transport conference this past September, held in Brest, France, there was no shortage of big-picture, creative ideas pertaining to maritime shipping and alternative energy.One such project, called Seaguel, was presented as part of a larger discussion on hydrogen (H2) as maritime fuel. Maritime Schools Must Prep for Offshore Wind Jobs

The offshore wind industry in the United States is growing exponentially, with multiple projects in the development stages off of the Atlantic coast. The total megawatt capacity of U.S. offshore wind farms is anticipated to reach 22,000 by 2030 and 43,000 by 2050. To support this growth, U.S. Department of Energy reports estimate over 40,000 new jobs will be created by 2030.The new jobs anticipated to support the offshore wind industry include a wide range of types, including engineers, trade workers, surveyors, scientists, technicians, managers, and seafarers.

Solar Array Installed on Cargo Ship

The marine renewable energy technology company Eco Marine Power (EMP) announced that its Aquarius MAS + Solar solution has been installed on the large general cargo ship MV Panamana.The  Japan-based EMP said in a press release that this installation was carried out by the ship’s crew with remote support provided by Zeaborn Ship Management (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and EMP from Japan.Over the next few weeks the solar power equipment will be integrated with EMP’s Aquarius Management & Automation System (MAS) and then put into service.MV Panamana is a 54, 694 metric tonne (MT) open hatch general cargo/container carrier with 2 x 70 MT gantry cranes. The ship is owned by Masterbulk Pte. Ltd. (Singapore) and was built by Oshima Shipbuilding Co.

Star Bulk, Eco Marine Power Commence Renewable Energy Study

As part of its continued focus on bringing renewable energy solutions to shipping, Eco Marine Power (EMP) has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Star Bulk S.A. (Star Bulk) covering a joint study project focused on the feasibility of using EMP’s technologies on existing and new bulk carriers. The joint study between Star Bulk and EMP will cover engineering issues related to how various equipment including solar panels, batteries and other devices can be installed on existing and new ships.

ARENA Funded Study to Uncover Wave Energy Costs

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is providing $181,000 funding to support Bombora Wave Power (Bombora) to complete a detailed cost of energy study for its Wave Energy Convertor (WEC). Bombora’s WEC design uses a responsive rolling membrane fitted to a long concrete arm resting on the sea floor. The membrane pressurises air, which is passed through a turbine to generate electricity. ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht said harnessing energy from the ocean required determination, ingenuity and time. ‘Bombora has been developing its innovative wave energy device for five years. This study is an opportunity for Bombora to prove the case for its technology and continue the journey towards a commercial solution that could strengthen Australia’s position as a leader in wave power…

Teekay LNG Partners Orders Two LNG Newbuilds

Teekay LNG Partners L.P. (Teekay LNG or the Partnership) (NYSE:TGP) entered into an agreement with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering CO., LTD., (DSME) of South Korea for the construction of two 173,400 cu. m. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier newbuildings, with options to order up to three additional vessels. The Partnership intends to secure long-term contract employment for both vessels prior to their delivery in the first half of 2016. The newbuildings will be constructed with M-type, Electronically Controlled, Gas Injection (MEGI) twin engines, which are expected to be significantly more fuel-efficient and have lower emission levels than other engines currently being utilized in LNG shipping.

Initiative to Speed Offshore Wind Development

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar launched a “Smart from the Start” wind energy initiative for the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf to facilitate siting, leasing and construction of new projects, spurring the rapid and responsible development of the renewable resource. “The Cape Wind lease is an historic milestone in America’s renewable energy future, but to fully harness the economic and energy benefits of our nation’s vast Atlantic wind potential we need to implement a smart permitting process that is efficient, thorough, and unburdened by needless red tape,” said Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. “Our ‘Smart from the Start’ Initiative for Atlantic wind will allow us to identify priority Wind Energy Areas for potential development…

Ziff Completes New Study

Ziff Energy Group has completed the 7th edition of its Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Improving Field Performance (IFP) study, which evaluated pre-hurricane 2008 & 2007 operating costs for more than two dozen producing Deepwater assets. Participants included Deepwater operators, who collectively account for 1.1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (MMBOE/d) produced in the Deepwater region of the Gulf of Mexico. Ziff Energy’s study focuses on offshore fields located in greater than 1,000 ft. of water depth, which encompass the various development systems currently being used in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico: Floating systems (including TLPs, Spars and Semi-submersibles), Jacket platforms, and Subsea tie-back systems.
