NTSB Releases Preliminary Report on Offshore Platform Helicopter Crash

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has released a preliminary report on the December 29, 2022, fatal helicopter crash near a Gulf of Mexico oil platform. One pilot and three passengers died in the incident."On December 29, 2022, about 0834 central standard time, a Bell 407 helicopter, N595RL, was substantially damaged during takeoff from an offshore platform in the Gulf of Mexico. EFMS Install Uptick on Malaysian OSVs

U.K. Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth has produced power from her onboard diesel generators (DGs) for the first time, marking a significant stage in the program. Firing up the diesel generators for the first time in Rosyth was Philip Dunne, Minister of State for Defense Procurement, who took part in a short ceremony and was accompanied by Rear Admiral Henry Parker representing the Ministry of Defense on the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA), and Sir Peter Gershon, the Independent Chairman of the ACA.

Enginei Fuel Management System Upgraded

Diesel power engineering specialist Royston has introduced a next-generation version of its fuel management system, Enginei. The new integrated system, with a range of enhanced fuel data analysis and reporting options, has been developed in consultation with vessel operators and owners who are putting greater importance on the availability of detailed engine and mission critical information. To meet these demands the new Enginei system uses data collection software to expand the range of fuel, engine performance and voyage data used for crucial fuel analysis and optimization decisions.

Liebherr to Debut 5-Axle Mobile Crane

Liebherr will be showing its new 160-tonne mobile crane LTM 1160-5.2 at the Intermat 2015 in Paris, France. This crane on a five-axle chassis was presented to the public for the first time at the Conexpo Con/Agg 2014 exhibition in Las Vegas (USA). It is the successor to the LTM 1160-5.1. The load capacity of the new LTM 1160-5.2 has been increased by around 20-25 % compared to its predecessor whilst the telescopic boom has remained at the same length of 62 m. The vehicle width has been reduced from 3 m to 2.75 m. That means that not only it is easier to drive on public roads but also considerably better on constricted sites. The superstructure of the new LTM 1160-5.2 is powered by the engine in the crane chassis using a mechanical shaft.

New Diesel Fuel Quality Sensor from CMR

According to engine control and instrumentation specialists CMR Group, significant fuel savings can be achieved by diesel engine owners and marine vessel operators using the world’s first commercial high horsepower diesel fuel quality sensor. The new Near Infrared Intelligent Sensor (NIRISTM) has been developed to detect fuel parameters through advanced hydro carbon profiling which measures the molecular structure of fuel. This allows real time optimization of injection, combustion and post-treatment for all types of fuel, including bio-fuels.

John Deere Power Systems has added a new engine rating to its current line of marine engine products - the PowerTech 6068SFM. The engine has an M5 rating with 300 hp (224 kW) at 2,600 rpm and is specially suited for rescue boats, pilot boats and other light-duty applications. This new heat exchanger cooled engine will incorporate a seawater aftercooler, electronically controlled fuel system, cruise-by-wire control, diagnostic messaging and self-protection. The high-torque 6068SFM achieves constant power at a rated speed from 2,600 rpm down to 2,300 rpm; the lower rpm reduces vibration and noise, provides exceptional control and maneuverability and enables the engine to turn larger propellers more efficiently.

Powerful Additions

After success with six John Deere marine engines, a charter fisherman adds four new PowerTech 12.5 L engines to his fleet. Steve Tomeny can't get enough of a good thing. Neither can his customers who come back to Fourchon, La., to sport fish for red snapper, king mackerel, and tuna on his John Deere-powered charter boats. In 1997, two of Tomeny's three charter boats, Louisiana and Gulf of Mexico, featured twin 300 hp 6076AFM marine diesels. His third, Southerner, was powered by twin 460-hp V12 engines of another brand. Because the hulls on all three boats were identical, Tomeny was able to make some interesting comparisons of performance and efficiency - comparisons that eventually resulted in the purchase of four 450 hp John Deere PowerTech 6125AFM engines for his boats.
