Three Generations Backed by Four Mitsubishi Engines

The female dynasty of Vidalia Dock and Storage are no strangers to the Murky Mississippi, nor the advantage of a Mitsubishi powered vessel. When it came to repowering the Sonny J., Vidalia Dock knew right where to go.Purchased in early 2018, the vessel was fitted with a pair of 600HP Cummins K19 engines. With the goal of EPA Tier compliance and engine reliability, Laborde Products provided two fully mechanical Mitsubishi S6R-Y3MPTAW Tier III engines for the 65x24 vessel; these engines are rated 684HP @1800RPM each with Twin Disc 7:1 transmissions.

North Carolina Ferries Change Course for the Future

Shoaling shifts NCDOT’s propulsion needs, prompting a sea change. Thrustmaster waterjets step in to carry the day. In Swansboro, N.C., boatbuilder U.S. Workboats (formerly Armstrong Marine) is assembling the linchpin of the North Carolina Department of Transport’s (NCDOT) business plan for its future Outer Banks ferry services. Separately, in both Hatteras and Ocracoke, crews are preparing to break ground on new parking additions and visitor facilities. The Ocracoke Express passenger ferry project – made necessary by the shifting and unpredictable shoaling on North Carolina’s Outer Banks – will, starting this summer, change forever the way tourists and visitors get to and from these national treasures.

Marine News Boat of the Month: March 2018

Jensen Maritime was recently selected to provide the design for Baydelta Maritime’s new 100-foot, Z-Drive hybrid tugboat. It will use Rolls-Royce hybrid technology and represents the first installation of a hybrid system for Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB), and the first hybrid tug designed by Jensen to enter the construction phase. Scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2019, the tug will feature the same ship assist and tanker escort capabilities of existing Valor class harbor tugs, but with multiple operational modes.

To help increase business and provide even better service for its customers, Laborde Products has been chosen as a Steyr Motors distributor. The company will offer sales, service and support throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin. Laborde will also offer dealer support along the Eastern seaboard of Mexico, from the Texas border to Cancun. Steyr Motors M1 Monoblock engines are known for the lowest weight in class at less than 1.2 kg/hp and the highest power density, up to 92 hp/ltr.

Laborde Draws Repeat Customer

Carla Jenkins of Vidalia, Louisiana, proudly carries on a family tradition of business on the waterways. Owner and operator of Vidalia Dock and Storage, a company started by her father in 1956, Jenkins relies on engine distributor Laborde Products to keep her fleet running reliably. Jenkins first became a Laborde customer last year, when she repowered her main work vessel, Vidalia Dock, with twin 1,260 hp Mitsubishi diesels. Vidalia Dock is a 93', 321 GT workhorse, hauling barges full of coal and crushed limestone on the Ouachita, Atchafalaya and Red Rivers up to 300 miles from home base.

Mack Boring Opens New Sales and Service Facility

Diesel engine distributor Mack Boring & Parts Co. celebrated the opening of their New Bedford, Mass. facility with a two-day open house. The event was capped with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce. As home to the largest commercial fishing fleet on the east coast and convenient to a large number of industrial and recreational marine dealers, the New Bedford location will enable Mack Boring to better serve dealers, boat owners and OEM customers. Until the move to New Bedford, the firm served the region from facilities in Middleborough, Mass.

Laborde Products was selected as Vapor Power International Marine Distributor for the North American marine markets. The announcement was made at the 2013 International WorkBoat Show. "The Vapor Power heaters really complement our growing position in the inland tank barge industry," said Doug Oehrlein, Laborde Products' VP sales & marketing. "The Mitsubishi powered mechanical tank barge power units and the Vapor Power heaters are the right product for our heater barge customers," said Oehrlein. Chris Cerullo, Laborde's marine manager.

GE & Partners Commission New Tugboat Fleet for Panama Canal

GE Marine, a unit of GE Transportation, and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced the start of the commissioning of 13 tugboats for use in the Panama Canal. The 26-engine order represents the largest in the history of GE Marine. The sale of the 12-cylinder V228 engines through GE's engine distributor Marinsa was finalized in October 2008. The vessels are being built by Cheoy Lee Shipyards of Hong Kong, the first of which arrived in Panama last week; all of the ships are scheduled to arrive by June 2012. In October, ACP celebrated the transit of the one millionth vessel through the Canal since its inauguration in 1914, and the new tugboats will be used to continue to transport tankers and barges through the Canal safely and efficiently.

He first joined Walker Engineering in 1994 as the regional manager for the Southeastern United States. company. As vice president, he will continue to be responsible for the overall sales and marketing of the Walker AIRSEP®, FUELSEP® and the new ALGAESEP® product lines, as well as strategic product placement. Deere Power Systems Inducts Distributors

Deere Power Systems Group, the engine and drive components division of Deere & Company, inducted four distributors into is prestigious 1998 John Deere Engine Distributor Manager's Club. Annually, the company inducts one distributor from each of its three U.S. divisions and Canada. The Manager's Club inductees are Diesel-Bec, Inc., from Boisbrand, Que.; Bell Power Systems, in Essex, Conn.; Superior Diesel, in Rhinelander, Wis.; and Northstar Power, in Ankeny, Iowa. Florida Detroit-Diesel Allison And Algae-X Sign Distributor Agreement

Algae-X has signed a distributor agreement with Florida Detroit Diesel-Allison (FDD-A)-based in Miami, Fla. FDD-A, which is the Detroit Diesel/MTU engine distributor operating eight branches throughout Florida, will be distributing the Algae-X Magnetic Fuel Conditioners and the AFC-705 Fuel Catalyst.
