InfraCal Meter Measures Soot in Diesel Engine Oils

The InfraCal Soot Meter, from Wilks, provides users with a rapid, onsite ASTM Method D7686 for measuring soot concentration levels in diesel engine oils. Soot levels as high as 12-15% are easily measured in 30 seconds. Feature: Make Emission Reductions Pay for Themselves

One of our major goals at Washington State Ferries over the last several years has been achieving voluntary compliance with MARPOL 2000, a set of stringent international standards to reduce marine pollution. Part of this effort includes making our diesel engines more efficient. There is technology to accomplish this task, but since we are a state agency with a fixed budget, the cost of this effort has to be offset by finding savings somewhere else. Even for something as desirable as pollution control, raising our operating cost was not an option. Our customers are mostly daily commuters who depend on the State of Washington for reliable, low-cost transportation. Fortunately, for the performance trial described below, we selected a technology that has its own element of payback.

Crowley Works to Reduce Emissions

In an age of increased environmental awareness, new commitments to reducing emissions and pollution in the air, Crowley has invested in engine modifications on its 10 tugboats dedicated to the Puerto Rico/Caribbean liner service and on its four tugs chartered to Trailer Bridge for their Puerto Rico barge service. Crowley makes four to five trips per week between the United States and Puerto Rico, which provide ample opportunity to test and perfect engine modifications, which have led to lower exhaust emissions and increased performance. Exhaust emissions take on a number of forms including visible smoke, particulate matter and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Crowley is working to reducing all three while achieving heightened performance with decreased fuel consumption.
