Dutch Minister Ploumen Visits Damen Shipyards Cape Town

The Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Ms Lilianne Ploumen, and a Dutch Trade Delegation visited Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) on Tuesday, July 8th 2014. The goal was to get an impression of the way South African and Dutch companies and entrepreneurs are working together. In addition, the newly qualified pupils from DSCT’s in-house Apprentice Training Centre received their certificates from the minister. All qualified artisans, as they now are, are offered a job at Damen’s South African shipyard. Minister Ploumen and the other guests were welcomed by Damen Shipyards Cape Town staff, including board members Mr Sam Montsi, Mr Friso Visser and Mrs Sefale Montsi-Zuma.

Navy Lands $52.5M Modification Job From GD

The U. S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat, a business unit of General Dynamics, a $52.5 million modification to an existing contract for Virginia- class submarine lead-yard services. Under the terms of the contract, Electric Boat will maintain, update and support the Virginia-class design and related drawings and data for each submarine, including technology insertion, throughout its construction and post-delivery maintenance period. Electric Boat will also provide all engineering and related services for maintenance and support of Virginia-class ship specifications. With the original contract awarded in September 2000, work is expected to be completed by April 2003.

SMIT Acquires GB Diving

SMIT acquired all shares of GB Holding B.V., the parent company of the subsidiaries GB Diving B.V. (oil & gas) and GB Diving -Inshore B.V. (civil). GB Diving is a Dutch company that provides ROV (Remote Operated Vehicles) and diving services, including project management, project engineering and related services for the high end of the oil and gas market. GB Diving's 30 employees will be integrated into the SMIT organization as a business unit named SMIT Subsea Europe. This new business unit will join SMIT Subsea Africa and SMIT Subsea Middle East, thus becoming the third regional subsea centre in the subsea network. Electric Boat Awarded $59.2M Contract

The U. S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $59.2 million contract modification for Virginia-class submarine lead-yard services. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. The award modifies a $75 million contract initially announced in September 2000. If all options are exercised and funded, the five-year contract will be worth about $500 million. Under the terms of the contract, Electric Boat will maintain, update and support the Virginia-class design and related drawings and data for each submarine, including technology insertion, throughout its construction and post-delivery maintenance period. Electric Boat will also provide all engineering and related services for maintenance and support of Virginia-class ship specifications.
