Stefanou Named MD at Wallem Ship Management

Ioannis Stefanou, Managing Director, Wallem Ship Management.

Wallem Group appointed Ioannis Stefanou as Managing Director of Wallem Ship Management, with responsibility for the oversight and strategic planning of the company’s ship management activities worldwide.Stefanou joined Wallem Ship Management in April 2014 to lead its Technical Management. Over his career he has worked for a number of well-known ship management companies and highly respected privately-owned ship operators. He holds Master’s degrees in both Marine Technology and Technical Management of Ship Operations and is a Chartered Engineer registered with Engineering Council UK.

ABS Names Fradelos VP of Regulatory Affairs

Classification society ABS announced it has appointed specialist Stamatis Fradelos as vice president of regulatory affairs.Fradelos, who returns to ABS’ Athens office, where he was previously business director and member of the IACS Environmental Panel, will spearhead ABS engagement with administrations and regulatory bodies and support the industry with compliance guidance.“ABS is engaged with maritime regulators and administrators all over the world and Stamatis will take our work in this area to the next level.

Marine Engineering Skills Gap to be Explored

The issue of the skills gap in the marine sector is to come under the spotlight as part of London International Shipping Week 2013 when the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and specialist engineering recruitment agency Matchtech will hold an invitation only roundtable to discuss and debate the topic. Chaired by Rear Admiral Nigel Guild CB, Chairman of the Engineering Council, and a Past President of IMarEST, the roundtable, taking place on Monday, September 9 at IMarEST headquarters in London, will attract key organizations from the marine industry, defense, academia and training, providing those taking part with the opportunity to discuss the skills shortages in marine engineering within the sector.

HII Apprentices Career Day: Students Set a Design Challenge

The Apprentice School gymnasium at Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division transformed. Using materials such as duct tape and marshmallows, NNS, in partnership with NASA Langley Research Center and the Peninsula Engineering Council (PEC), will engage 600 sophomores and juniors from Peninsula and Southside high schools to explore their passion in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and increase their awareness and appreciation of engineering—all while having a little fun. "It is inspiring to see so many young people who have an interest in STEM," said Jennifer McClain, manager of NNS' Career Pathways Program.
