Ship Paint: NRL Pigment Package Slows Discoloration

NRL is currently working with Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Systems Engineering Directorate, Ship Integrity & Performance Engineering (SEA 05P) to transition the new pigment combination into a military specification. A pigment package designed by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) to slow discoloration of the exterior coating on surface ships has started to make its way into the fleet and is producing early, positive results.NRL researchers created the pigment combination to satisfy the fleet requirement for the Navy standard "haze gray" paint that will remain color stable for longer than current coatings. Trump's Navy: A Look at the Future US Navy

It’s still too early to know for certain what the new administration will do about building up the U.S. Navy, as the numbers are a moving target. But with President Trump’s recent pledge to add $54 billion to defense spending, it’s a safe bet to make that the fleet will grow. So let’s start with the numbers. There are different ways to count the fleet size, including whether or not you count auxiliaries, but let’s use this number as the baseline: There are 274 ships in the U.S. Navy now.

Shell Marine Contracted to Lubricate MSC Ships

Amongst the latest listing of US Department of Defense, Navy, contracts Shell Marine Products US, Houston, Texas, is being awarded a $14,953,192 modification under a previously awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract (N00033-13-D-8020). The contract is for the supply and related services of lubricant oil products for the Engineering Directorate of the Military Sealift Command and other government agencies in need of lubricant oil supplies and related services. Work will be performed worldwide and is expected to be completed May 4, 2015. If all options are exercised, work will continue through May 2018. No funds will be obligated at the time of award.

Guardian Salvage SUPSALV Masterminded

Naval Sea System Command's (NAVSEA) Supervisor of Salvage & Diving (SUPSALV) continues to support the removal of the wreck. Guardian ran aground on the coral reef Jan. 17, while transiting the Sulu Sea. After the initial grounding, strong winds pushed the mine counter-measurees ship parallel to the reef and further aground causing flooding and structural damage which prevented refloating of the vessel or removal of the ship intact. SUPSALV is part of a command task unit established to perform the salvage operations and are providing salvage expertise and equipment to conduct operations.

Tembe Takes Command of USS Harry S. Truman

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) changed command in Norfolk on August 5. Capt. Tushar R. Tembe relieved Capt. Joseph M. Clarkson as Truman's commanding officer during a ceremony at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center at Nauticus museum. Tembe, the new commanding officer, said he intends to take what he has learned while previously serving as a commanding officer and apply it to leading the ship and crew to further success. "Today belongs to Joe and Sandy Clarkson," said Tembe. "You two have had a very successful command tour and have poured your heart and souls into Truman over the past two-and-a-half years and it shows over every inch of the ship and her crew. Tembe reported to Truman in July 2011.

CSC Awarded $368m Navy Order

CSC announced on Feb. 5 that the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has awarded the company a task order to continue providing professional engineering support services. The contract has a one-year base period and four one-year options, bringing the estimated total five-year contract value to $368m. CSC won the competitively awarded task order under the SeaPort Enhanced contract vehicle, originally awarded in 2004. This contract was awarded to CSC during the company's fiscal 2009 third quarter. CSC's work under the new task order continues the company's support to the NAVSEA engineering directorate which began more than three decades ago.

Alion, Navy Contract Valued up to $391M

Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, announced on Feb. 2, that it has been awarded a contract to support the Naval Systems Engineering Directorate (SEA 05) in providing technical and management services in all technical disciplines required to design and support the full spectrum of naval ship types. The award, a cost-plus, fixed-fee delivery order under the NAVSEA SeaPort Enhanced (SeaPort-e) contract, has a potential value of $391m over up to five years and extends Alion’s 35 years of continuous support to SEA 05. Gryphon Technologies Wins $337m

Gryphon Technologies, LC, has been awarded a competitively bid $337m contract by the U.S. Navy to provide expert professional engineering services to the Naval Sea Systems Command Engineering Directorate. Gryphon will provide technical and engineering support in the areas of advanced ship and vehicle concept development, future fleet force concepts, ship design standards, new-construction concepts, naval architecture, marine engineering, systems engineering and other lifecycle support for surface ships, aircraft carriers and submarines. New Shipboard Insulation Expected to Save Time and Money

Systems Command's (NAVSEA's) Engineering for Reduced Maintenance (ERM) team outlined Sept. 29 a new thermal barrier materials initiative designed to reduce maintenance expenses, improve shipboard quality of life and reduce shipboard weight. ERM is part of NAVSEA's Naval Systems Engineering Directorate team which seeks to streamline costly and time-consuming maintenance procedures in the fleet. Thermal barriers, the insulation on high temperature pipes and equipment, protect Sailors from serious burns and keep heat from dissipating, improving operational efficiency. Current insulation, commonly called "lagging," consists of up to six inches of a heavy, mortar-like, calcium silicate compound encased in fiberglass cloth.

USNS Lewis and Clark Wins Safety Award

Military Sealift Command’s dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Lewis and Clark won the 2008 Department of the Navy safety excellence award in the Military Sealift Command category, Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter announced yesterday. The 689-ft. ship is currently operating out of Norfolk, Va., and is crewed by 124 civil service mariners and a small military detachment of 11 active-duty Navy sailors. AVSEA Engineering for Reduced Maintenance

2007 was another successful year for the Naval Sea Systems Command’s (NAVSEA) Engineering for Reduced Maintenance (EFRM) team, with the warfighter-focused program making great strides in reducing shipboard maintenance burdens. Working under NAVSEA’s Naval Systems Engineering Directorate, the EFRM team seeks to streamline costly and time-consuming maintenance procedures in the Fleet. CVN 78 Ship Specification Signed

The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the Program Executive Officer (PEO) Aircraft Carriers held a signature and awards ceremony on Sept. 5 at the Washington Navy Yard to commemorate the certification of the ship specifications for the CVN 78 Class Aircraft Carriers, which makes up the CVN 21 program. NAVSEA's Ship Design, Integration and Engineering Directorate (SEA 05) led efforts, in cooperation with Northrop Grumman Newport News, the lead design shipyard, to develop the CVN 78 ship specifications with support from across the Navy Enterprise. The certification of the CVN 78 ship specifications marks a major milestone in the future aircraft design process and forms the basis of the technical data package used to prepare a ship construction contract.

The Naval Sea Systems Command’s (NAVSEA) Ship Design, Integration and Engineering Directorate and the Program Executive Officer for Aircraft Carriers (PEO Carriers) will commemorate the certification of CVN 78 ship specifications in a signing and awards ceremony to be held Sept. 5 in the NAVSEA Headquarters auditorium, Washington Navy Yard. Rear Adm. Charles H. Goddard, NAVSEA vice commander, will also present the Award of Merit for Group Achievement to the CVN 78 Design Team in recognition of this major milestone in the future aircraft design process.

The CVN 78 ship specifications were certified at a Senior Stakeholder Board/Executive Steering Group meeting held recently, after 12 months of specification writing and three months of intense reading sessions.
