Goliat Supply Vessel Connected to Shore Power

Vår Energi (formerly Eni Norge) and  Norwegian shipowner Simon Møkster Shipping have completed the first phase of hybrid power conversion of the Stril Barents vessel, currently working as a supply vessel on the Goliat field in the Barents Sea offshore Norway.Stril Barents is a supply vessel for the Goliat platform in the Barents Sea, one of the oil fields on the Norwegian shelf with the lowest CO2 emissions."Through efficient and good cooperation, the first phase has been completed. The shore power connection has been tested and is now operational. This allows Stril Barents to be connected to shore power, significantly reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while docked at the supply base Polarbase in Hammerfest.

Aker Solutions Wins Jotun FEED Contract

The newly formed exploration and production (E&P) company Vår Energi is progressing the redevelopment of the Balder and Ringhorne area offshore Norway and a FEED contract for the Jotun FPSO life extension has now been signed with Aker Solutions.In total, about 20 billion NOK ($2.3 billion) will be invested in the redevelopment of the area, which includes the first NCS license area, PL 001 from 1965, said the largest independent E&P company on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS).Part of the redevelopment, is the Balder X Project. Goliat Field Vessel Switches to Battery Power

Norwegian subsidiary of Italian oil company Eni Norge AS and Stavanger shipping company Simon Møkster Shipping cut fuel consumption on the vessel Stril Barents in the Goliat field.According to a press release from the Norwegean offshore vessel owner, this should be done by installing a land flow system combined with an energy storage battery solution on board.The system will provide better control and higher safety margins as it is installed in addition to existing engines on board. During demanding offshore operations such as dynamic positioning along installations, large load variations can occur, it said.According to the release, the battery will act as an energy buffer that supplies the required energy immediately and thus much faster than an internal combustion engine.

ESVAGT Eyes Arctic Opportunities

Offshore vessel owner ESVAGT says it has set its sights on growth opportunities in Arctic regions where an uptick in oil and gas production is expected in coming years. Equinor Energy Strikes Gas in Barents Sea

Norwegian multinational energy company Equinor Energy has made discovery containing up to 24billion cubic feet of gas in the Barents Sea. Two exploration targets were found, with the first containing between 10 and 20billion cubic feet, the other between one and four billion.The discovery’s profitability is currently unclear, said a statement from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD)."Equinor Energy AS has completed the drilling of wildcat well  about 15 kilometres northwest of discovery well (Atlantis) and 370 kilometres north of Hammerfest. WIN WIN: Wind Powered Oil Recovery Concept Progresses

The DNV GL-led joint industry project, WIN WIN (WINd powered Water INjection), has completed its first phase and determined that wind power could be used to power offshore water injection. The project is currently moving into its second phase, which includes refining and testing the electrical systems, and investigating possibilities for broader applications. The project consists of four partners: DNV GL, ExxonMobil and ENI Norge – all part of the first phase – and the Norwegian Research Council – a new participant for this second phase.

DOF Bags Contracts from Asco and Eni

Norwegian offshore vessel owner DOF has been awarded charter contracts for a platform supply vessel (PSV) and an anchor handling tug supply vessel (AHTS). DOF said on Wednesday that the company won a two-year firm contract plus options with Asco Marine for the Skandi Aukra PSV. In addition, Eni Norge awarded DOF with a 13-month call-off contract, with a minimum 60 days firm agreement for the AHTS Skandi Iceman. Both contracts commenced with effect from December 2016. With a multi-national workforce in excess of 4 ,000 personnel, DOF ASA is an international group of companies which owns and operates a fleet of modern offshore/subsea vessels, and engineering capacity to service both the offshore and subsea market.

Eni Cancels Vessel Deal with Viking Supply Ships

Viking Supply Ships A/S (VSS) has received an early termination notice of the contract for the Ice-class 1A AHTS “Njord Viking”. The vessel has been working for Eni Norge in the Barents Sea and has also been part of the extended towing-preparedness in the area on behalf of the Norwegian Coastal Administration. The vessel was according to the contract with Eni Norge firm until the end of 2016, with optional periods of 2 x 6 months thereafter. According to the contract VSS will be entitled to a termination fee of approximately USD 13.300/day for the remainder of the firm period. The termination represents a loss of income during the remaining firm period of the contract of MUSD 3.3 in 2016.

DNV GL Guideline Trashes Unnecessary Subsea Documentation

Customer-case shows potential for a 40% reduction in engineering hours on subsea paperwork, and up to 80% less documentation. A cross-industry project led by DNV GL to halt the boom in subsea documentation shows that implementing a standardized approach can significantly reduce engineering hours. The two-year collaboration led by DNV GL has concluded in a publicly available Recommended Practice which can reduce the amount of subsea documentation and enable documentation reuse in a typical subsea field development project. DNVGL-RP-O101 ‘Technical documentation for subsea projects’ details a required minimum set of documentation transferred between E&P companies, operators and contractors for the construction, procurement and operation of a field.

When the Dockwise Vanguard was conceived, Dockwise, part of the Boskalis Group, had a vision for a new market - transporting the world’s largest cargoes, including FPSOs (floating production storage and offloading vessels). It hasn’t taken the vessel, the largest heavy transport vessel in the world, long to prove its worth, as well as the feasibility of such a feat. The vessel has currently transported its first ship-shaped FPSO cargo, Bumi Armada’s Armada Intrepid, to South East Asia which also happens to be one of the three largest cargoes ever transported.

Viking Supply Ships, Eni Norge, Extend Contract

Viking Supply Ships A/S has extended the contract with Eni Norge for the Ice-classed AHTS “Njord Viking”. The vessel is now firm with Eni Norge till 31st December 2016. Further, the charterer has the option to extend the charter period with 2 x 6 months. The initial firm period lasted till 29th July 2015. Njord Viking is supporting the Goliat project in the Norwegian Barents Sea, where production is scheduled to commence later this year. Viking Supply Ships has had a good relationship with Eni Norge over several years and the company is pleased to extend the contract with what we consider to be a key client. In exchange for a longer firm period than originally agreed, the rate has been reduced. The total value of the extended firm period of the contract is about NOK 150 million.

Goliat FPSO in Norway

The Goliat platform has arrived in Hammerfest, Norway last week, after a 63-day journey from South Korea covering 15,608 nautical miles. It will now undergo final preparations for the first oil production from the Barents Sea. "Upon completion of final preparations to install her in the Barents Sea this summer, she will support production operations at the world’s northernmost producing offshore oil field located approximately 80 kilometers offshore Ersvika," says a company statement. The largest heavy transport vessel in the world, Dockwise Vanguard, has transported the platform throughout the Indian Ocean. When the field comes on stream later this summer, Goliat will become the world's northernmost producing offshore oil field.

HHI Orders Refrigeration, Cold Stores for FPSO

Goliat, the first cylindrical floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel on the Norwegian Continental Shelf built for Eni Norge and partner Statoil at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), will feature ALMACO’s cold stores and refrigeration machinery. Hyundai Heavy Industries awarded the contract to ALMACO Group in July of 2011, and ALMACO finalized the commissioning work at the end of 2014. ALMACO said its scope of supply includes the supply and installation of cold stores and refrigeration machinery, as well as commissioning and spare parts.

Eni Norge Enters Agreement with DNV GL

Eni Norge AS awards DNV GL a framework agreement for the supply of inspection services to the Goliat platform in the Barents Sea. The term of the contract is three years, with an option for a two-year extension. The assignment consists of planning and carrying out inspections of static equipment, load-bearing structures and offloading and anchoring systems aboard the Goliat FPSO during its operational life. The contract, which will help further reinforce the petroleum cluster in Northern Norway, is in line with Eni Norge’s ambition to create spin-off effects connected with the Goliat project. DNV GL has experience of working for Eni Norge from the company’s Harstad section, for example in the field of oil spill contingency.

Exploration Well in Kramsnø Completed

Statoil, together with PL532 partners, has made a gas discovery in the Kramsnø prospect in the Barents Sea. The exploration program around the Johan Castberg field has been vital in providing area knowledge, but so far not delivered expected oil volumes. In 2011-2012 Statoil made a breakthrough in the Barents Sea with two high impact oil discoveries Skrugard and Havis, proving a total of 400-600 million barrels of recoverable oil. Skrugard and Havis opened a new petroleum province in the Barents Sea and created a basis for the Johan Castberg field development project.

FPSO Wins Korea Government Award for HHI

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) which claims to be the world’s largest shipbuilder, says it has gained an additional ‘World Class Product’ certificate from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for its cylindrical FPSO. The newly certified ‘World Class Product’ is a cylindrical FPSO: the Goliat FPSO ordered by Eni Norge will be installed in the Goliat field, 85 km northwest of Hammerfest, in the Barents Sea. This cylindrical floater is designed to store 1 million barrels of crude oil, and 4 million standard cubic meters of gas per day.

EnerMech Secures Eni Norge Lifting Contract

Eni Norge AS has awarded mechanical engineering group EnerMech a three-year frame agreement to provide lifting and inspection services on the Goliat FPSO project. EnerMech views the Norwegian oil and gas sector as a key growth area for its seven business lines and in 2014 will invest up to NOK 20.4 million (£2 million) in equipment and facilities to expand its market reach. The company employs 55 staff in Norway and last year opened a second base in Bergen to complement its long established facility in Stavanger.

MAN GenSet engines to power standby ship in harsh climate. On 26 July 2012, Zamakona Shipyard S.A. delivered the 87 m long standby vessel ‘Esvagt Aurora’ to the ESVAGT AS company, belonging to the Danish multinational A.P. Møller-Mærsk Group. The vessel is powered by a diesel-electric set-up featuring, among others, 4 × MAN 6L21/31 engines – 1,320 kWm per engine: this is the third vessel the Bilbao-based shipyard has built for the same client. The vessel’s main purpose is to remain on standby and give immediate assistance to offshore platforms in emergency situations.

Barents Sea Drill Rig Stability Incident to be Investigated

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) will investigate the recent stability incident on the mobile rig 'Scarabeo 8'. Scarabeo 8 is a semi-submersible drilling facility owned by Saipem SpA Norwegian Branch (Saipem). The facility is currently engaged in exploration drilling for Eni Norge on well 7220/10 in the Barents Sea. Just after 15:00 hours on Tuesday, 4 September, the Scarabeo 8 developed a 5.7-degree list due to unintentional filling of a ballast tank. The incident triggered an alarm and mustering of personnel. There were 140 people on board when the incident occurred.The situation was normalised during the course of an hour. Preliminary findings indicate that the incident was caused by incorrect operation of equipment.
