Nobiskrug Inks Deal to Build Superyacht “Black Shark”

Her striking design makes “Black Shark” one of the most interesting superyacht projects at present. Nobiskrug and the owner have signed the contract for the continued construction of the vessel (new build project 793). With the third order since the economic restart the Rendsburg shipyard stays on its successful course since the takeover by Tennor Group. Investor Lars Windhorst, who was significantly involved in the negotiations for the “Black Shark”, emphasizes that this success is proof of Nobiskrug’s capabilities.

Seafarer Welfare App to Launch by Isle of Man Ship Registry

The Isle of Man Ship Registry is set to launch what is reported to be the first seafarer welfare app designed by a ship registry. Set to launch in July 2020, the app will be free to around 11,000 seafarers sailing on more than 400 vessels under the Isle of Man flag.“Safety is a fundamental pillar of our ethos as a high-quality flag state,” said Isle of Man Ship Registry director Cameron Mitchell. “Even before Covid we recognized that something had to be done that delivered tangible results to help seafarers in the wilderness of the sea.

UK: Ships Should Adopt a Heightened Security in the Strait of Hormuz

Britain has recommended all British-flagged ships go to a heightened state of security in the Strait of Hormuz, Sky News reported on Thursday, citing unnamed maritime industry sources.A Department for Transport spokeswoman said: "The Department for Transport, as competent authority, regularly provides Security Advice to UK and Red Ensign Group Shipping on how they should operate in areas of high risk." (Reuters, Reporting by William James, editing by Elizabeth Piper)

UK Flag Eligibility Opens Up for Others

UK Ship Register (UKSR) will now allow owners from a broader group of countries to register their vessels in the UK.UKSR announced that it is set to expand its ownership eligibility, allowing more shipping companies from around the world to flag to the UK.The criteria has been widened beyond the current areas of the UK and Europe to include Commonwealth countries and bring the UK in line with our Red Ensign Group partners.The UK Flag is an International Register (not limited to nationally based companies). Director of the UK Ship Register Richard Parkes said, “This change will now allow the UK flag to attract first class ships and owners who have their company based outside of the UK. They too will be able to benefit from exceptional service and a global reputation”.

"Black Shark" Swims into View

Following a successful keel laying ceremony on February 20, 2019, NOBISKRUG has announced that 77-meter M/Y Black Shark is taking shape and remains on track to meet its scheduled delivery in spring 2021.Taking place at NOBISKRUG’s keel laying premises in Kiel, the ceremony also served as the yard’s first event of the year. Holger Kahl, Managing Director of NOBISKRUG, delivered a warm welcome speech to the guests, followed by an address by Evgeniy Kochman, Chief Executive of Imperial.

UK: Shipping Fleet Grew 7% in 2017

Gross tonnage on the UK Ship Register (UKSR) grew 7% in the year to end 2017, and was 16.2 million GT at end December 2017. Official data from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) – for all merchant vessels over 100GT1 – shows that gross tonnage on the UKSR has grown by 18% compared with the end of 2014, following three consecutive years of growth. Based on world fleet data (supplied by IHS Global) for trading vessels only, at the end of 2017, the UK registered trading fleet accounted for 0.8% of the world fleet on a deadweight tonnage basis (a measure of cargo carrying capacity), and 1.2% when based on gross tonnage (a measure of vessel size).

Seafarers’ Legislation Faces Year-Long Ratification Delay

Full ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) which will have far reaching implications for the whole shipping industry, including commercial yachts, is now likely to be delayed by a year until April 2012. “Although the required gross tonnage figure has been reached there is, however, some doubt as to whether the necessary number of countries will be achieved by the end of this year,” said John Wade, technical services manager with Isle of Man-based Dominion Marine. His prediction comes after attending the Global Superyacht Forum 2010 in Amsterdam which saw delegates from the leading brokerage houses and major shipyards taking part in the industry’s largest and most valuable conference event.
