Great Lakes Wins Jacksonville Harbor Dredging Contract

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation has been awarded a $105 million Base and Option B contract award on the Jacksonville Harbor Construction Dredging, 47-Foot Contract C Cut-42 Project, the U.S.' largest dredging services provider announced Friday.Great Lakes said it expects the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to award additional option work items on the contract by mid-2021 with a value of $11.5 million, resulting in a total contract award of $116.5 million.Dredging is scheduled…

DEME Wins Elbe Deepening Contract

DEME, an international group of specialized companies involved in complex marine engineering works, has won a major contract to carry out the deepening of the Elbe fairway in Germany.The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group said that its German subsidiary Nordsee Nassbagger- und Tiefbau GmbH, based in Bremen, has acquired the maintenance dredging contract on the River Elbe in Germany.The contract has been awarded to a joint venture, including DEME’s German subsidiary, for a period of two years. Global Maritime Makes Two Hires in Asia Pacific

Global Maritime, a provider of marine warranty, dynamic positioning and engineering services to the offshore sector, has made two important hires to support its Asia Pacific (APAC) operations. Mei Ling Chan has been appointed as Regional Finance Manager for APAC where she will take responsibility for finance functions and reporting across the region; and Leong Weng Yoon has been named Global Maritime’s new HSEQ Manager for APAC. Leong Weng Yoon’s appointment reaffirms Global Maritime’s commitment to the highest health, safety, environmental and quality standards across its operations.

ChartCo Acquires Docmap

ChartCo, provider of maritime digital data and compliance services, said it has expanded its range of integrated marine solutions with the acquisition of the at-sea digital document management company Docmap. Oslo-based Docmap AS was founded in 2005 and provides solutions within the health, safety, environmental and quality (HSEQ) operations on vessels and ashore. Its recently launched Docmap 8 software operates both shore side and on board through standard web browsers and incorporates modules for audit control and risk assessment, and works alongside customers’ continuous improvement programs. Docmap 8 can be supplied either off the shelf with best in class functionality, or customized to suit individual company requirements.

Seaspan Appoints Three

Seaspan has named three new Vice Presidents to its Senior Leadership Team, announcing the appointments of Linda Wortman as Vice President, Finance & Accounting; Catherine Chick as Vice President, Business Services & Technology; and Shawn Chylinski as Vice President, Health, Safety, Environment & Quality. As Vice President, Finance & Accounting, Linda is responsible for strategic financial oversight of the marine division and corporate services. She is a key advisor to the CFO and Executive Leadership Team and ensures information and metrics are available to inform value added business decisions. Linda joined Seaspan in 2008 as Controller, Marine and was appointed to the role of Vice President, Finance & Accounting in January 2016.

BMT Wins Contract with US Navy Environmental Program

BMT Designers & Planners, Inc. (BMT), an operating company of BMT Group Ltd, an international design, engineering and risk management consultancy, announced it has won a three-year contract to support the U.S. Navy’s environmental and conservation programs. The contract was awarded by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Indian Head Division to provide technical and analytical support for Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Laboratory Quality and Accreditation Office (LQAO) and affiliated agencies. Over a three-year period, the contract has a ceiling of about $5,700,000. BMT expects to work on 40-50 projects over the course of the new contract. This contract will cover management and technical support tasks in matters concerning the US Navy environmental and conservation programs.

First Supramax Vessel for Japan-Italy Venture

'DACC Tirreno' was delivered at the Oshima shipyard in Japan yesterday, the first of four Supramax bulk carriers for the dACC Maritime Limited fleet, the joint venture established by the Coeclerici and d’Amico Groups. The 60,000dwt vessel, measuring 200m long and 60m wide, is powered by a MAN B&W ME engine and has a cruising speed of 14.5 knots. Daily fuel consumption of 25 tonnes represents a saving of around 6/7 tonnes of fuel compared to similar vessels in the class, the company said. A statement from the company said that the new ship meets “the highest requirements in terms of safety, environmental protection, quality and efficiency”.

LISCR Appoints New GM for London

The Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), the U.S.-based manager of the Liberian Registry, has appointed Robert Twell as general manager of its dedicated London office, in succession to Jonathan Spremulli. Robert Twell joins LISCR from CMA Ships UK Ltd/CMA CGM Group, where he was the Safety and Security Manager and DPA/CSO based in London. Prior to that he was with the National Sea Training Centre, a leading provider of maritime education and practical training, where he was Head of Department in Marine Studies and Fire Fighting.

Port of Hamburg Offers Environmental Discount

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) said its dedication to pursuing the highest standards of safety, quality and environmental protection led them to joining the Green Award scheme as an incentive provider for seagoing ships. From 2014, oil, product and chemical tankers, LNG and, after a launch of the certification program later this year, LPG carriers, that hold the Green Award certificate are eligible for a 3% reduction in port fees when calling at the port of Hamburg. The port of Hamburg has an active position in promoting safety and environmental consciousness.

UK Shipyard Gives Grads Workplace Experience

A&P North East Shipyard recently welcomed graduates for work placements alongside staff in the Health and Safety, Environmental and Quality divisions of the company. The programme dates back to 2009 when A&P North East were approached by London Offshore Consultants Limited to see if the yard could help them with work-placed visits for graduates. By providing young people with this opportunity it was seen as an opportunity to bridge the gap between education and working sites. A&P North East consequently welcomes different graduates each year at the Tyneside and Teesside sites.

DNV to Cooperate with Korea Gas Corporation

DNV and Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS), Korea’s national gas company, has entered into an agreement to cooperate on a feasibility study on the establishment of an LNG bunkering infrastructure in Korea. This is one of the largest and most comprehensive feasibility studies ever initiated in the worldwide LNG bunkering industry. Based on this agreement, DNV will qualitatively and quantitatively study the feasibility of implementing LNG bunkering in ports in the south-eastern area, Pusan, and western area, Incheon and Pyeongtaek. This project will be led by Dr. Sun Il Yoo, Senior Customer Service Manager in DNV Korea, who will be assisted by the DNV Clean Technology Centre in Singapore. KOGAS has formed consortiums with Korea’s major energy companies to carry out the feasibility study.

Bureau Veritas has completed the first certification audit of any shipping company in the world  to the new standard ISO 50001- 2011 - Energy Management Systems. Crowley Maritime Corporation announced that Charlie Nalen has been named general manager of the company's Valdez operation. In his new position, Nalen will be responsible for the entirety of Crowley's marine operations in Valdez including ship assist and escort services for Alyeska Pipeline Service Company's Ship Escort/Response Vessel System (SERVS). He will report to Bruce Harland, vice president of contract services, Alaska and will relocate from Jacksonville, Fla. to Valdez. Nalen has held a number of related positions during his 29 years with Crowley.

Suz Michel, director of people development and learning for Crowley in Seattle, and Bob Weist, vice president of sales and marketing for the logistics group were awarded 2008 Thomas Crowley trophies, the company's highest honor, at ceremonies yesterday at the company's Talleyrand terminal in Jacksonville, Fla. Created in 1985, only 50 of the company's 4,300-plus employees have been recognized with the limited edition, bronze sculpture depicting young Thomas Crowley as he ferried goods to and from ships on San Francisco Bay in the early 1890s.

First Phase of Custom Built Terminal in Houston

Westway Terminal Company LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Westway Group, Inc. (WTWG), opened Phase I of a Custom Built Bulk Liquid Storage Terminal for Nynas Americas at the Westway's Houston-1 Terminal. In an effort to improve its customer satisfaction and efficiencies, Nynas contracted with Westway Terminal Company to construct a state-of-the-art, customized logistics hub in Houston, which is scheduled for full completion by the end of 2009. The new hub, located along the Houston Ship Channel, will better meet the requirements of Nynas' customers by providing dedicated logistics, blending and special loading facilities for Nynas specialty products. These parameters closely align with Nynas' priorities on safety, environmental and quality standards.
