NGO Shipbreaking Platform Pushes for Safe Recycling of FSO Safer
The NGO Shipbreaking Platform has called for the safe and environmentally friendly recycling of the FSO Safer, currently being salvaged off the coast of Yemen.The UNDP is looking for a destination for the FSO’s recycling, and the Platform is calling on the Dutch government, one of the biggest donors to the Stop Red Sea Oil Pollution operation, to assist UNDP in identifying a suitable recycling facility. Østensjø Rederi Orders Four Newbuilds

World First: Hydrogen Tug at Antwerp Port
Europe's second-largest seaport Port of Antwerp has ordered construction of a tug powered by hydrogen, the first in the world.The unique "Hydrotug" is driven by combustion engines that burn hydrogen in combination with diesel. The motors also comply with the very strictest standard, the EU Stage V, making them the lowest-rated for emissions on the market.The Belgium-based port operator said that this ultra-low-emission tug is being built by Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB), a pioneer in the field of hydrogen power for shipping. SHI Develops Lithium-Ion Battery System
South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) said that it has developed a lithium-ion battery power system for ships.A press release from the shipbuilding giant said that the system, jointly developed with local battery manufacturer Samsung SDI Co., earned a type approval from Norway's renowned classification society DVL-GL, becoming the first local shipbuilder to do so, according to the shipbuilder.The newly developed lithium ion battery system, which reduces fuel consumption of generators by optimally controlling and managing on-board generators and power load, is an Eco-friendly technology that enables reductions in emissions of pollutant substances and in operating costs as well.As the global demand for environmentally friendly technologies is higher than ever…

First Hybrid Straddle Carriers at Hamburg Port
The port of Hamburg has for the first time introduced two straddle carriers with environmentally friendly hybrid engines.The first two energy saving, low emissions straddle carriers with hybrid engines are being used to transport containers between the ship, the yard, the rail terminal and the truck gate at the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT).According to a press release frm the company, the two prototypes are expected to use at least 15 percent less diesel than their predecessors. Adriatic LNG Receives 600th Cargo
Adriatic LNG, the company which operates the regasification terminal located off the Veneto coastline, announces the arrival of the 600th carrier, the Al Jassasiya. The carrier left Ras Laffan Port in Qatar, delivering a cargo of about 140,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), equivalent to nearly 85 million cubic meters of gas. The event was celebrated on the terminal with a brief ceremony that involved the vessel's personnel and Adriatic LNG's staff, including the Operations Manager Fabian Erle, who delivered a recognition to Georgios Pissaris, the Captain of the Al Jassasiya. Adriatic LNG's Commercial Manager, Corrado Papa commented: "Once again our regasification terminal confirmed its strategic role for the national and European energy supply system.
Emissions Regulations Present Strategic Opportunity
The marine industry as a whole is responsible for about 2.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Shipbuilders and fleet owners have spent the last two decades adjusting to shifting emissions regulations since the introduction of the MARPOL Convention 1997 Protocol, which included specific regulations for the reduction of air pollution from marine vessels. Since then, there have been additions and amendments to ensure that the industry is doing its bit to better support the environment, with the latest regulation pulling forward lower caps in global emissions.
LNG Ferry Megastar Delivered to Tallink
Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku Shipyard delivered the state-of-the-art LNG fast ferry Megastar to owner Tallink on January 24. The newly built ferry will begin plying the Helsinki-Tallinn route on January 29 as the most technologically advanced fast ferry in the Baltic Sea. The 212-meter-long Megastar uses liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel, but is also able to run on marine diesel. With LNG, the vessel will create no sulphur or soot particles and decreasing the nitrogen and CO2 emissions.

The assembly of TUI Cruises ship Mein Schiff 6 at Meyer Turku shipyard started today 25.4.2016 with the laying of the first grandblock in the big building dock. When ready in 2017, Mein Schiff 6 will be a fourth high-technology cruise ship being built in Turku shipyard for TUI Cruises and marks the continuation of good cooperation between the two companies. Following old traditions of the shipyard coins were placed under the keel block to bring luck for the ship. Representatives of TUI Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Meyer Turku and the classification society Det Norske Veritas, invited guests, and members of the press joined the event.
Finnish Battery-powered Ferry Due for 2017 Delivery
Siemens has been commissioned to provide the complete electro-technical solution for Finland’s first battery-powered car ferry. The Finnish shipping company FinFerries has ordered the newbuilding from the Polish shipyard CRIST S.A. The environmentally-friendly ferry will improve the transport options between Nauvo and Parainen in the Turku Archipelago. It will be approximately 90 meters long by 16 meters wide with capacity for a maximum of 90 cars. Operation on the 1.6 kilometer-long route will begin in summer 2017.
Dumpers 2015 - Examples of Particularly Bad Practices
The worst dumper prize goes to IDAN OFER, son of shipping magnate Sammy Ofer. Idan Ofer owns QUANTUM PACIFIC GROUP and has a controlling stake in Israel’s largest publicly traded company, ISRAEL CORPORATION. Combined, these shipping companies sold the highest number of vessels for substandard breaking operations in 2015: nine in total, with six of them going to Bangladesh, where conditions are known to be worst. GREEK SHIP OWNERS sold the most ships to South Asian shipbreaking yards in 2015, with 87 ships in total. Since the NGO Shipbreaking Platform started to compile data on world-wide ship dismantling practices in 2009, Greek shipping companies have unceasingly topped the list of owners that opt for dirty and dangerous shipbreaking.

Keel Laid for TUI Cruises’ New Ship
The keel of Mein Schiff 5 was laid on June 23, 2015 at Meyer Turku shipyard’s drydock. Before the keel-laying ceremony, the start of production of the sister ship Mein Schiff 6 took place in the shipyard’s construction hall. The production of the cruise ship Mein Schiff 6 was officially launched when TUI Cruises CEO Wybcke Meyer started the plasma cutting machine in the production hall of Meyer Turku shipyard. Another event was also celebrated at the shipyard on the same day, as the next milestone in the building process of the Mein Schiff 5 took place.
