NorShipping 2019: A “Koselig” Event

"Koselig" is a Norwegian adjective used to describe situations that give a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation. The NorShipping exhibition and conference, one of the largest in northern Europe, could definitely be described as koselig. Occurring in Oslo, Norway between June 4-7, 2019, the conference featured close to 1,000 exhibitors from around the world. With the prominently featured Blue Economy Hall, terms such as marine sustainability and environmental ocean awareness held the center stage at a number of the events. In true Norwegian fashion, most of the major press announcements were delivered in semi-intimate gathers with copious amounts coffee by maritime CEOs and VPs who enjoyed being called by their first names.

“Hapag-Lloyd LIVE” is Live

German-based cargo container shipping line, Hapag-Lloyd AG is introducing its new real-time container monitoring program “Hapag-Lloyd LIVE”, that will monitor its reefer containers and provide information such as real-time location, temperature and power-off alerts.In an initial step, the company is equipping its entire reefer fleet of some 100,000 containers to offer real-time GPS location, temperature information and power-off alerts.As the program is designed to fit customers’ needs, Hapag-Lloyd intends to develop commercial products in close cooperation with its customers in order to adapt the solution even further.The product features of “Hapag-Lloyd LIVE” will be gradually released for use as the entire reefer fleet is being outfitted.

Based in Birmingham, U.K., Butcher brings with him over 30 years of leadership experience in global professional services businesses. After graduating from Southampton University, Butcher held a number of leadership roles in the assurance, IT services and telecommunications sectors, including positions with SAI Global, Marconi, Ericsson and Damovo. The U.S. Navy has a balanced fleet, but it wants to grow bigger and better. Will the budget allow both? Maritime Reporter's March 2017 cover story on the U.S. Navy was all about the numbers. There exists several plans to grow the fleet beyond the current number of 308 ships, the Mitre recommendation of 414 ships, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment 340-ship proposal, and the Navy’s decision to grow the fleet to 355 ships, and the Trump administration’s 350. With so many numbers being bandied about, there are even more suggestions on how to get there.

Wärtsilä Takes Part in Autonomous Shipping Project

Wärtsilä’s strong commitment to developing the technologies, the system reliability, and the essential designs to enable the viability of autonomous shipping is again emphasised through its participation in an important research programme. This Day In Naval History: August 23

1819 - Commodore Oliver H. Perry, the hero of the Battle of Lake Erie, dies on board the schooner, USS Nonsuch, in Trinidad of a fever contracted during his successful efforts to suppress piracy while maintaining the friendship of Latin American governments. It was his 34th birthday. 1862 - A boat crew from USS Essex, commanded by Capt. William D. Porter, is fired on by Confederate guerillas at Bayou Sara, La. In return, USS Essex shells the town. 1864 - During the Civil War, Rear Adm. David G. Farraguts squadron capture Fort Morgan at Mobile Bay, Ala., winning control of Mobile Bay. The fort withstands naval bombardment for more than two weeks. 1890 - USS Baltimore (Cruiser #3) departs New York Harbor to return the remains of inventor John Ericsson to his native Sweden.

1804 - Commodore Edward Prebles Mediterranean Squadron launches the first of a series of bombardments on the harbor of Tripoli. Designed to destroy the defending batteries and sink enemy ships, the bombardments are part of the blockade that Preble established in 1803. 1861 - Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles calls for designers to submit plans for ironclad warships to the Navy Department. The design, by inventor John Ericsson, is chosen for USS Monitor, a revolutionary armored ship, carrying her guns in a rotating turret. 1942 - Mildred H. McAfee takes the oath of office to become the first female line officer. She is commissioned

1850 - USS Advance and USS Rescue sail from New York in a failed attempt to rescue Sir John Franklins Expedition, lost in the Arctic since 1847. Caught in the ice and after tremendous hardship, USS Advance returns on Aug. 20, 1851. Rescue returns Sept. 1939 - USS Squalus (SS 192) suffers a catastrophic main induction valve failure during a test dive off the New Hampshire coast and is partially flooded, killing 26 crew members. 1944 - USS England (DE 635) sinks a Japanese submarine near New Ireland, sinking five submarines in a week.

Ericsson, Inmarsat to Streamline Supply Chain

Inmarsat and Ericsson have signed a strategic maritime agreement that is intended to facilitate the sharing of cargo, logistics and vessel operational data to help streamline the maritime supply chain. The two companies will jointly develop services, solutions and applications to drive industry standards for satellite connectivity and application integration in the maritime industry. As a first step, Ericsson has signed a distribution contract to offer XpressLink, Inmarsat’s combined L-band and Ku-band VSAT network for the maritime market. XpressLink offers an easy upgrade path to Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress service, powered by the new Global Xpress constellation, when it becomes available in the coming months.

EfficienSea2 Rolls out Maritime Cloud

The Danish-led e-navigation project, EfficienSea2, got one step closer to being launched when a core element of the project – Maritime Cloud – was debated by a group of international maritime organisations and companies. The purpose of the project EfficienSea2 is to develop and implement e-navigation and, thus, up-to-date technology on board ships by introducing and using modern communication, navigation and administrative systems. The concept behind the Maritime Cloud has been developed by the Danish Maritime Authority in connection with previous international projects. By now, it has matured so much that it is ready to receive feedback from relevant international maritime organisations and companies.

Building the World’s Largest 4G Offshore Network

Statoil has chosen Maritime Communications Partner (MCP) to deploy and operate its high speed 4G-network on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Statoil and MCP have signed a six-year contract with an option to extend for another four years. With that, MCP will immediately start building the world’s largest 4G network at sea. Statoil will benefit from high-speed mobile coverage on all of its 34 platforms on the NCS. This will improve communications between platforms, rigs and supply-vessels.

Ericsson Maritime Platform Targets Shipping Connectivity

To tap the potential of shipping industry, Ericsson launched its Maritime ICT Cloud platform designed to provide an end-to-end solution targeting connectivity and tracking needs for the maritime industry. The Swedish telecom giant Ericsson launched Maritime ICT Cloud services for the shipping industry. Maritime ICT Cloud includes a communication platform with optimized connectivity and bandwidth for different types of traffic. The "Maritime ICT Cloud”, mainly supporting logistical operations, as well as connecting vessels at sea with shore-based operations, maintenance service providers, customer support centres, fleet/transportation partners, port operations and authorities. There are also tools for voyage optimization, cargo monitoring and crew welfare.

KNC to Provide Security Tech for Algerian VTMIS

Invizeon Hires Kevin Walker to Lead Two Subsidiary Firms

Invizeon Corporation has appointed Kevin Walker as the Chief Operating Officer for two of its subsidiaries: Seafaring Security Services, LLC and Slipstream Resources, LLC. Mr. Walker was previously Vice President and General Manager of ACADEMI, a security, training, and logistics services provider to the U.S. Government, international and domestic military & law enforcement agencies, and numerous commercial customers. While at ACADEMI he successfully led the company’s flagship Training Services business unit. Prior to ACADEMI, Mr. Walker spent more than 15 years in the semiconductor and telecom industries driving operations, manufacturing, R&D, logistics and supply chain. Most notably with Ericsson of Stockholm, Sweden and Standard Microsystems Corporation (SMSC) on Long Island, New York.

1944 - During preparations for the invasion of Saipan an accidental ordnance blast on LST 353 sets off cataclysmic ammunition explosions at West Loch, Pearl Harbor, killing 163 and injuring 396. Six tank landing ships (LST-39, LST-43, LST-69, LST-179, LST-353, LST-480), three tank landing craft (LCT-961, LCT-963, LCT-983), and 17 track landing vehicles (LVTs) are destroyed in explosions and fires. 1964 - The initiation of the standing carrier presence at Yankee Station in the South China Sea.

Senior V-P for Group HR Bill Allen is to leave the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group and return to the USA after seven years in Denmark. His successor will be Lucien Alziari, who brings a strong track record from major global companies, such as Avon and PepsiCo.
