NAPA’s Passenger Ship Stability Management Tool Gains DNV Type Approval
Classification society DNV has awarded type approval to NAPA’s new onboard stability software for the passenger sector – NAPA Stability, a new onboard stability solution that will replace NAPA Loading Computer, the stability management solution for passenger ships. This type approval establishes that the software meets DNV’s requirements for the assessment of ship stability in both intact and damaged conditions, and the relevant IACS requirements to enable Safe Return to Port (IACS UR L5 Type 4 requirements)…
Norsepower’s Rotor Sail Solution Successfully Tested
Norsepower Oy Ltd. and Bore Ltd today carried out successful sea trial of Norsepower’s Rotor Sail Solution, a new wind propulsion technology for ships. The sea trials, verified by NAPA and supported by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, confirm fuel savings of 2.6% using a single small Rotor Sail on a route in the North Sea. With these fuel savings, the technology has a payback period of 4 years. Based on the trials, Norsepower and Bore believe that a full system on Estraden with two rotors has the potential to deliver 5% efficiency savings on an ongoing basis. Norsepower forecasts savings of 20% for vessels with multiple, large rotors traveling in favourable wind routes. The Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution was installed on the 9,700 DWT Ro-Ro carrier MS Estraden.
Tidetech to Supply NAPA Ship Tidal Prediction Data
Tidetech and NAPA have agreed the supply of tidal current prediction data for ship optimisation fuel saving, initially for South East Asia and UK–Europe. Tidetech applies the science of oceanography to create data models that benefit commercial shipping – cruise ships, ferries, container ships, tankers – and offshore operations. Following a successful three-month trial aboard a 8,530DWT cruise ship – using Tidetech’s Singapore and Malacca Straits models – the agreement includes developing an expanded data model to cover the vessel’s full operating area of Phuket…
Survey Shows Some Unaware of SEEMP Fuel Saving Potential
A NAPA Group survey shows SEEMP acknowledged as an industry priority, but knowledge gaps exist, smaller owners & operators lag behind. Software house for ship design and operations, NAPA Group, finds that a majority of respondents were unaware of scope of potential fuel savings the plan could trigger. The survey completed by over fifty ship owners, operators and charterers, revealed that the industry is taking responsibility for SEEMP compliance seriously and is optimistic about its benefits. However, the focus for most respondents was to ensure compliance and maintaining a business-as-usual approach, rather than implementing a SEEMP with significant potential fuel savings.
