Condition Based Monitoring & Saving Cash

Profitability in shipping goes up and down in waves. 2012 wasn’t too bad, with annual operating costs shrinking by 1.8% on average versus 2011, when average costs rose 2.1%, but 2013 weighed anchor in the losses column for many. And 2014? So far the waters are choppy, with the overall mood up in May but dipping down in the quarter that ended in August, according to Moore Stephen’s quarterly Shipping Confidence Survey. Much of what worries the industry concerns issues over which it has little to no control – oversupply…

Dynamic Monitoring Brings Energy Surveys to Life

Many shipping companies use independent experts to conduct comprehensive ship energy surveys which are then used by owners, operators and managers to make better maintenance and operations decisions and improve energy and fuel efficiency. These surveys are often prepared by world-class organizations, which leverage tremendous experience and normally provide information on the operation and energy efficiency of the vessel at that particular time. ESRG has taken these reports and brought them to life within the OstiaEdge platform, enabling this valuable information to be dynamic instead of static and to be relevant as conditions change.

Internet at Sea: Staying Connected

Clarksons Research estimates that by 2020 the convergence between IT and shipbuilding will be worth $35 billion. Pictured is Frank Coles, Inmarsat.

The maritime industry is at a crossroads, with a dearth of next-generation talent willing and available for a life at sea, yet increasing demands for efficiency and clarity of operations. At this crossroads lies modern communication technology, the connective tissue that can help to cure many of the industry’s ills, as Frank Coles, President of Inmarsat Maritime, contends. Commercial shipping will always remain a pivotal link in the global transport chain, but the very nature…

The Broadband of Competitive Advantage

Frank Coles (Photo courtesy Inmarsat)

Inmarsat Maritime President Frank Coles said the efficiency gains of the “Maritime Industrial Internet” are at hand, if only shipowners can grasp the potential for competitive advantage. The first satellite in the Global Xpress fleet will complete all of its testing by July of this year, with the second and third satellites on schedule to be launched by the close of 2014. The Global Xpress Maritime service is expected to become globally available from the end of the first quarter of 2015.

Bringing Workboats “Into the Cloud”

A recent white paper by marine data analytics software provider ESRG outlines the way forward for operators who embrace the latest in technology. Today, only a minority of vessels are positioned to capture industrial internet benefits. That said; almost every new-build ship will have technology built in to capture these benefits. Substantial fuel savings, reduction in maintenance and repair costs, and greater assurance of environmental compliance are the largest drivers. The industrial internet has already created significant value elsewhere and it will do the same for the marine industry.
