Brazil Addresses Biofouling
Biodiversity can be threatened by organisms which can build up on ships' hulls and other marine structures, a process known as biofouling.A press note from International Maritime Organization (IMO) said that during a workshop in Arraial do Cabo, Brazil (5 August), experts on biofouling and invasive species and others took the first steps towards setting up a national task force to tackle the issue.According to the UN body, Brazil is one of 12 lead partnering countries in the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloFouling Partnerships project, which aims to protect marine biodiversity by addressing biofouling.Each lead partnering country's national task force…
Research Vessel Launched for Angolan Fisheries Ministry
On November 9, Damen Shipyards Galati launched Baía Farta, a new Fishery Research Vessel (FRV) 7417 for the Angolan Ministry of Fisheries. The vessel's sponsor was Dra. Isabel Cristóvão, director of Gabinete de Estudos, Planeamento e Estatística. The FRV 7417 is suited to various purposes, including hydrographic operations, acoustics research, pelagic and demersal trawling, plankton, water, environmental and geographical sampling, oil recovery and emergency towing operations.
ABS Elects New Council
At the 150th Annual Meeting of the Members of ABS, three industry leaders were elected to the ABS Council. Following the Annual Meeting, the ABS Council met and elected industry leaders to both its Marine and Offshore Technical Committees. Individuals serving on the ABS Council and the Technical Committees help guide the class society in fulfilling its mission of promoting the security of life, property and the natural environment. “Classification represents the concept of self-regulation for the marine and offshore industry,” said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.
Change in Shareholding at Lisnave
There has been change in the shareholding at Portugal’s Lisnave following discussions between Germany’s German Industrial Group (GIG) and Portugal’s Estudos e Projectos Navais SA (Navivessel). The original agreement between these two companies included the possibility, if certain conditions and events were met, that GIG would acquire an additional stake of 40% of Lisnave’s share capital, thus obtaining control of the company. However, it has been decided that GIG would not increase its existing share capital and that Navivessel would acquire the 20% share capital acquired by GIG during 2002.
