The container volume has surged by 130% to 277,303 TEUs for the first three months of 2016, as compared with the same period a year ago. This growth follows an 80% expansion in container traffic at CMIT in 2015 over the year prior, to 724,768 TEUs. CMIT, part of the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network, is a deep-water facility located in the Ba Ria‐Vung Tau Province, southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, and is capable of accommodating larger deep draft vessels of up to 15,000 TEU capacity, now cascading into Vietnamese trade routes.

Maersk Kotka called the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal on February 9, signalling Maersk Line’s return of vessel service to the Port of New Orleans. The weekly Northern European service is teamed with a weekly Mediterranean service through the 2M Alliance Maersk formed with Mediterranean Shipping Company. Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Company are the largest- and second-largest container carriers in the world. At 7,400-TEU, Maersk Kotka is the largest ship in the seven-vessel service.

The Port of New Orleans achieved record container volumes in 2014 thanks in part to the addition of new shipping services and an uptick in the national economy contributed. According to year-end totals, 490,526 twenty-foot-equivalent units moved through the Port’s Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal during the 12 months, an 8.8 percent increase over the 2013 total of 451,057. “Strong export markets, primarily for chemical and agriculture products, together with new inbound customers such as Chiquita contributed to record container volumes,” said Port President and CEO Gary LaGrange.

Three European companies have won contracts for almost half the value of Angola's $16 billion ultra-deepwater Kaombo oil project, confirming a trend toward bigger scale and risk for the deep-sea contracting and construction sector. Saipem of Italy announced a $4 billion contract related to fitting out and supplying two converted oil tankers to become the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) part of the project. Meanwhile, Paris-listed Technip and crane-ship specialist Heerema revealed a $3.5 billion deal for subsea tubes, pipes and cables to connect the two FPSOs to the seabed two kilometres below the surface. Heerema said the contract was the biggest on record of its kind.

Austal announced an expansion of its European service presence with the establishment of a maintenance hub on the Strait of Gibraltar. Based in Southern Spain and Northern Morocco, the new operations will support the extensive fleet of Austal and non-Austal high speed craft currently operating on the Strait of Gibraltar. The new operations will support the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa in Spain, and Tanger Ville and Tanger Med in Morocco, and will be staffed by members of Austal’s existing maintenance team as well as local personnel.

Carnival Cruise Lines reported today that it will transfer its 1,022-passenger Tropicale to sister company Costa Cruises in February 2001. Prior to its delivery to Costa, the 36,674-ton vessel will complete its current schedule of 10-day Panama Canal cruises from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,which end Feb. 10, 2001. After that, Costa will immediately reposition the Tropicale to Genoa, Italy, for an extensive refurbishment and refit before placing the vessel into European service. Once the work is complete, the vessel will assume the physical characteristics and on-board environment of a typical Costa-owned ship. Stolt-Nielsen S.A. announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group (SNTG), has acquired two parcel tankers, each of approximately 8,600 deadweight tons, to meet growing customer demand in the Company's inter-European service. The sisterships M/T Bow Wave and M/T Bow Wind, previously on time charter to Odfjell ASA, were purchased from Iino Lines for $18.5m each. SNTG expects to take delivery of the ships between July and November of this year. Both ships were built to IMO II standards in 1999 by the Usuki Shipyard Co. Ltd. of Japan. Features include double hulls, fully stainless steel tanks, and 20 segregations per ship. M/T Bow Wave and M/T Bow Wind will be renamed M/T Stolt Skua and M/T Stolt Teal, respectively.
