MISC Berhad (MISC) has taken delivery of its sixth Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) – Seri Elbert, from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. Seri Elbert and her sister vessels - Seri Everest, Seri Erlang, Seri Emei, Seri Emory and Seri Emperor are a series of second generation VLECs – all of which were acquired by MISC from Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical Co. The Australian Antarctic Division said a small fire broke out on board a vessel used to resupply Australia’s Casey research station in Antarctica.The fire was discovered around 7 a.m. local time on January 29, in a battery room above the bridge of Bahamas-flagged MPV Everest while the vessel was transiting back to Hobart following an Antarctic resupply trip.The fire was quickly put out using handheld fire extinguishers, AAD said. The U.S. maritime industry publicly recognized the merchant mariners responsible for safe ship operations at the Annual Safety Awards Luncheon held on June 7, 2017. In all, 211 people, representing 53 companies and their subsidiaries attended the annual industry-sponsored event where 1,582 vessels with 10,604 cumulative years of accident free operation were recognized. Royal Dutch Shell is nearing the sale of a large part of its North Sea oil and gas assets to private equity-backed Chrysaor for $3 billion, banking sources said, marking a milestone in its drive to reduce debt after buying BG Group. Chrysaor, a North Sea-focused oil company backed by private equity fund EIG Partners, will acquire from Shell a mix of older fields, new developments and infrastructure in a move analysts say could breathe new life into one of the world's oldest offshore basins where production has been in a steady decline since the late 1990s. OceanGate, a provider of manned submersible services, and iXBlue, a provider of navigation, positioning and imaging solutions, have partnered to expand the application and use of advanced marine navigation and sonar equipment to explore the world’s deep oceans. As part of the alliance, OceanGate has selected the iXBlue PHINS Inertial Navigation System for use aboard its fleet of Cyclops series manned submersibles. Reportedly a world first, the PHINS system has been installed on a manned submersible to deliver real-time navigational data directly to the pilot.

With just one month to go to the start of the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15, GAC Pindar is in the thick of ensuring the provision of a seamless logistics support package for the 12th edition of the race that has been nicknamed the 'Everest of Sailing'. As the official logistics provider for the Volvo Ocean Race, the mammoth task that faces GAC Pindar includes logistics and customs clearance of entire race villages and gear for the crews, in addition to emergency supply of spare parts during the race. Due to the sheer size of the race - 38,739 nautical miles across five continents and eleven ports including a pit-stop in The Hague in just nine months - two identical race villages are required and will leapfrog each other across the globe.

Meredith Loring and Sami Inkinen, a married couple based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, began their unsupported rowing expedition on June 18, 2014, out of Monterey Harbor, rowing more than 60 miles a day to cover their 2,800-mile Pacific crossing to Honolulu in 45 days and four hours. While they set the new pair’s speed record for a Mid-Pacific crossing, the couple’s expedition was largely an effort to bring attention to the dangers of sugar and to help decrease raising levels of childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Inkinen, who is also the co-founder of the online real estate company Trulia, and Loring are both formidable athletes, with Inkinen an age-group triathlon world champion and Loring the winner of her category in the Mount Everest marathon in June.

BG Group agreed to the sale of its equity interest in the Central Area Transmission System (CATS) gas pipeline in the UK North Sea and associated infrastructure to Antin Infrastructure Partners for total proceeds up to $954 million. Under the agreement, BG Group will sell its 62.78% interest in CATS for a consideration comprising $888 million on completion of the transaction and a deferred amount of $66 million. Prosecuting authorities in Russia were under fire today after it was revealed that they have failed to lift charges of piracy against the Arctic 30, despite pledging to do so. Russia’s powerful Investigative Committee announced last week that the piracy charges – which carry a 15-year jail sentence – would be replaced with charges of hooliganism. But when the thirty detainees were brought before the Committee over the course of this week, the piracy charge was not withdrawn. Instead each of them was simply served with the additional charge of hooliganism. They now stand accused of both offences, which carry a maximum sentence of 15 and 7 years, respectively.
