Evergreen Group Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Evergreen Group celebrated its 50th Anniversary at the Chang Yung-Fa Foundation, home of the charity set-up by Evergreen Group Founder and Chairman Dr. Y.F. Cargo Owners in Flight to Safety after Hanjin Collapse

Evergreen Marine says has assured large U.S. customers, while Maersk Line says "strongly hopes" M&A will continue. Cargo owners are becoming more concerned about risks and are shifting their business to shipping lines deemed more financially stable after the collapse of South Korea's Hanjin Shipping Co Ltd, top shipping executives said. Robbert van Trooijen, Asia Pacific chief executive of AP Moeller-Maersk's container shipping arm, said the company was seeing a "flight to safe havens" after the August collapse of Hanjin left $14 billion of cargo stranded at sea. "We've seen that the debate around the viability of the supplier is a more important element in the contracting decision... A lot of customers are looking at the more stable shipping lines to contract their cargo with," he said.

Hanjin Collapse: Cargo Owners Look for Saftey

Cargo owners are becoming more concerned about risks and are shifting their business to shipping lines deemed more financially stable after the collapse of South Korea's Hanjin Shipping Co Ltd, Reuters reported quoting top shipping executives. Robbert van Trooijen, Asia Pacific chief executive of AP Moeller-Maersk's container shipping arm, said the company was seeing a "flight to safe havens" after the August collapse of Hanjin left $14 billion of cargo stranded at sea. Maersk's comments were echoed by Taiwanese rival Evergreen Marine Corp which also told Reuters last week it had recently provided relevant information to large U.S. companies to assure them of its financial health. "They are making additional efforts to check shipping firms' financial status.

Bronson Hsieh Leaves Evergreen to Head Yang Ming

Evergreen Group vice chairman Bronson Hsieh has been appointed chairman of rival Taiwan carrier Yang Ming Marine.   Yang Ming Marine Transport, the nation’s second-largest container shipper in terms of fleet size, approved Hsieh’s appointment, reports said.   Hsieh worked at Evergreen Group for more than 40 years before stepping down from his position earlier this year.   Hsieh replaces Frank Lu, who has served as chairman of the shipping line since 2003. Hsieh lost his role at Evergreen in March during a succession battle between the two sons of the late chairman of the Taiwanese company, Chung Yung-fa.   Yang Ming Marine Transport reported a net loss of NT$7.72 billion (US$239.6) last year, or NT$2.24 in losses per share, with total sales of NT$127.56 billion.

Chang Leaves Evergreen

Evergreen Marine Corporation said that Chang Kuo-wei, the late founder's son, was no longer on its board of directors, reports local media. Chang's seat on its board of directors will be filled by Hsieh Huey-chuan. According to observers, the Chang Kuo-wei faced the latest setback in his losing war of succession when he left the board of Evergreen International Storage & Transport Corp. Evergreen International Storage, one of Evergreen Group’s publicly traded businesses, announced a reassignment of its corporate directors and supervisors. The shipping firm said Chang had been replaced with Wei Mao-chun, general manager of Evergreen International Storage & Transport Corp.

Succession Fight for Evergreen Heats Up

The feud among the scions of late billionaire Evergreen Group founder Chang Yung-fa's family boiled to the surface, reports local Taiwanese media. The struggle between the heirs to Evergreen Group has escalated as the three older brothers reportedly took drastic measures to undermine their younger brother’s accession to the helm of the family-run shipping and transportation empire. Evergreen Group founder Chang Yung-fa died on Jan. 20 and left a December 2014 will that named his youngest son, Chang Kuo-wei, chairman of Eva Airways and the only son of his second wife, as his successor and the sole inheritor of his estate worth billions of New Taiwan dollars.

Taiwan President Honors Evergreen Founder

Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou honored Evergreen Group founder Dr. Chang Yung-Fa with a posthumous commendation in recognition of his contributions to international transportation and social welfare during the memorial service today. The company's North America headquarters are in Jersey City, N.J. Taiwan's Education Minister and the Minister of Transportation and Communications also offered homage to Dr. Chang with the First-Class Professional Education Medal and First-Class Professional Transportation Medal. Evergreen Group Chairman Dies at 88

Evergreen Group founder and Group Chairman Dr. Yung-Fa Chang passed away at the age of 88 in Taipei on January 20, 2016. Dr. Chang was born in 1927. He founded Evergreen Marine Corporation in 1968 with just one secondhand general cargo vessel, and by 1985, the company had become the world's largest container shipping line. In 1989 he established EVA Air, extending his global business empire from shipping to airline and land transportation. Dr. Chang devoted much of his efforts to charity and social welfare, primarily through the Chang Yung-Fa Foundation.

Evergreen Orders 10 More Ships

The Evergreen Group, Taiwan's largest container shipper, has signed an agreement with Japan's Imabari Shipbuilding Co. to build 10 new container vessels with a capacity of 2,800 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) to expand its fleet. The new shipbuilding plan is the second time in the past month that the shipping company has decided to add 2,800-TEU container ships to its fleet. In August, Evergreen signed an agreement with Taiwanese shipbuilder China Shipbuilding Corp. (CSBC) for 10 new vessels with a capacity of 2,800 TEUs each. The first ship is planned to be delivered during the second half of 2017 with the completion of the series due by the first half of 2018. The vessels are planned to be deployed in the intra-Asia trade.

Evergreen Orders Ten Boxships from Imabari

Evergreen Group has signed an order with Japanese shipbuilder Imabari for ten 2,800 TEU class B-type vessels yesterday. These are in addition to the order for ten similar vessels announced last month from CSBC in Taiwan. The latest contract was signed by EMC Chairman Mr. Anchor Chang and Imabari Shipbuilding President Mr. Yukito Higaki. The first ship is planned to be delivered during the first half of 2018 with the completion of the series due by the first half of 2019. All twenty newbuildings are planned to be deployed in the intra-Asia trade. Evergreen's B-type vessels will be 211 meters in length, 32.8 meters wide, and have a design draft of 10 meters with a capacity of around 2,800 TEU.

Evergreen Orders Ten Boxships

The first ship will be delivered during the second half of 2017 with the completion of the series due by the first half of 2018. The vessels will be deployed in the intra-Asia trade. Bronson Hsieh said, "After the negotiations of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) are concluded, the ASEAN countries, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand are expected to remove trade barriers, enhancing bilateral trades and thereby boosting regional cargo growth.

Evergreen Names Penultimate L-type Containership

A naming ceremony was held for the Evergreen Group’s newest containership, Ever Lovely, the ninth of its L-type vessels to be built by CSBC Corporation in Taiwan and the penultimate vessel in a series of 30 ships. The ceremony took place at CSBC's Kaohsiung shipyard and was officiated by Bronson Hsieh, Evergreen's  Second Vice Group Chairman. The official rope-cutting of the new vessel was performed by Anna U. Obermeier, the wife of Pier Luigi Maneschi, Chairman of Evergreen Shipping Agency (Italy) S.p.A. Ever Lovely is owned by Evergreen Marine (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

Naming Ceremony of Evergreen's EVER LYRIC

Evergreen Group today held the naming ceremony for EVER LYRIC, the eighth of its L-type vessels built by CSBC Corporation in Taiwan. The ceremony took place at CSBC's Kaohsiung shipyard and was officiated by Mr. Raymond Lin, Evergreen Group's Vice Group Chairman. The official rope-cutting of the new 8,508 TEU vessel was performed by Mrs. Jarijanti Buana, the wife of the Chairman of Evergreen Shipping Agency Indonesia. Owned by Evergreen Marine Corp., EVER LYRIC is 334.8 meters in length, 45.8 meters wide, with a draft of 14.2 meters. The vessel can cruise at a speed up to 24.5 knots. As a refinement to her original eco-friendly design, the vessel is fitted with a brand new energy-saving bow. This improvement enables the ship to further enhance her fuel-efficiency and reduce emissions.

Giant Ships to Rule World Seas

Megaships and large container ships are going to dominate the oceans calling for bigger changes in the shipping and port industry. Reflect on recent news: Evergreen Group, one of Taiwan’s leading transport conglomerates, has agreed to charter 11 large ships as part of its efforts to expand capacity and raise the efficiency and economy of scale of its fleet. Maersk Line is in early talks with Asian shipbuilders for an order of up to 10 container ships that would have capacities of up to 20,000 20-foot-equivalent units. Japanese shipbuilder Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. says it has secured new building orders for 11 containerships with a TEU capacity of 20,000, marking the first-ever orders for ships that size.

Evergreen to Charter 11 Containerships

Evergreen Group signed time charter agreements with Shoei Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (Shoei) to charter a total of 11 18,000 TEU vessels, which include the six units of the same capacity announced by Evergreen Marine Corp. (EMC) and its subsidiary last December. The charter parties were signed by EMC's Chairman Anchor Chang and Shoei's President Yukito Higaki. The ships are planned to be delivered from 2018 through 2019. Evergreen said it will cooperate with Shoei to build the new generation ultra-large containerships, which will measure about 400 meters in length and about 59 meters wide.

Evergreen Naming Ceremony for EVER LUNAR

Evergreen Group held the naming ceremony for EVER LUNAR today, the seventh of its L-type vessels to be built by CSBC Corporation in Taiwan. The ceremony, which was officiated by Ms. Lee-Ching Ko, Second Vice Group Chairman of Evergreen Group, took place at CSBC's Kaohsiung shipyard. The official rope-cutting of the new 8,508 TEU vessel was performed by Mrs. Lin, Mei-Chun. EVER LUNAR is owned by Evergreen Marine Corporation (Taiwan) Ltd. The ship is 334.8 meters in length, 45.8 meters wide and has a draft of 14.2 meters. In common with its L-type sister ships, EVER LUNAR can cruise at speeds up to 24.5 knots. The ship will be delivered into service in January and join Evergreen Line's Far East - Arabian Persian Gulf (APG) Service.

Evergreen Holds Naming Ceremony for New Ship

Evergreen Group held the naming ceremony for Ever Loading, the sixth of its L-type vessels to be built by CSBC Corporation in Taiwan. The ceremony took place at CSBC's Kaohsiung shipyard and was officiated by Bronson Hsieh, Evergreen Group's Second Vice Group Chairman. The official rope-cutting of the new 8,508 TEU vessel was performed by Michelle Nardulli, a member of the Board of Directors of Italia Marittima, Evergreen's Italian subsidiary. Hsieh said in his speech that the vessel's name symbolizes Evergreen Line's target for continued business success.

Evergreen Name Fifth New Containership

Evergreen Goup say that their newbuild 'Ever Lissome', the fifth of its L-type containerships to be built by CSBC Corporation in Taiwan, has been named in a recent shipyard ceremony. The ceremony took place at China Shipbuilding Company's Kaohsiung shipyard and was officiated by Raymond Lin, Evergreen Group's Vice Group Chairman. The official rope-cutting of the new 8,508 TEU vessel was performed by Mrs. Aphinya Changariyavong, the wife of EvergreenShipping Agency (Thailand). Chairman Mr. Nivat Changariyavong."Global economic outlook is gradually improving," said Mr. Lin, speaking at the ceremony. "According to IMF's latest World Economic Outlook, the world output is expected to grow by 3.6% in 2014. In addition, Clarksons expects global box trade to increase by 6% this year.

Rickmers Charter Out Two Panamax Container Ships

Rickmers Maritime, inform it has chartered out to Maersk Line the container ships 'Henry Rickmers' (formerly 'Ital Fastosa') and 'Richard Rickmers' (formerly 'Ital Festosa'), each of them 3,450 TEU panamax-size container ships. Henry Rickmers will be delivered to Maersk Line this week and Richard Rickmers two weeks later; they have each been chartered for an initial minimum period of 12 months, up to a maximum of 24 months. The two vessels will be chartered at a floating rate based on an index agreed upon by both Maersk Line and RTM.
