SHI Receives Order for 16 Methanol-Powered Ships

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has signed a shipbuilding contract for 16 16,000 TEU methanol-powered container ships from a shipowner in Asia.Evergreen Shipping’s subsidiary Evergreen Marine (Asia) has placed an order with SHI for 16 vessels and a separate order for eight 16,000 TEU with Japan’s Nihon Shipyard.The order amount was KRW 3,959.3 billion ($3.1 billion), the largest ever for a single ship contract, says SHI. It has broken the previous record (12 LNG carriers, KRW 3.331 trillion) set by SHI in June of last year.

Salvors Begin Removing Containers from Ever Forward

Salvors on Saturday started removing containers from the grounded containership Ever Forward in an effort to reduce ground force ahead of the next refloat attempt.The lightering operation follows several failed attempts to dredge around and tow out the 1,095-foot vessel, which has been stuck in the mud outside of the Craighill Channel in the Chesapeake Bay since March 13.Crane barges will remove a portion of the containers from both the port and starboard sides of the the 12,000 TEU vessel.

A  1,095-foot containership has run aground in the Chesapeake Bay, near Craighill Channel in Maryland.The U.S. Coast Guard said it is working with Maryland Department of the Environment to coordinate the refloating of containership Ever Forward, after its watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region received the initial report of the grounding at 9 p.m., Sunday. The ship had just left the Port of Baltimore and was en route to Norfolk, Va.No injuries, pollution or damage to the vessel have been reported.

A combination of factors including stowage deficiencies likely led to the loss of containers from the U.K.-flagged containership Ever Smart off the coast if Japan in 2017, according to U.K. investigators.On October 30, 2017, the 300-meter, 7,024 TEU-capacity containership suffered a container stow collapse during a period of heavy pitching and hull vibration while on passage between Taipei, Taiwan and Los Angeles, U.S. The master had changed the ship’s passage plan to avoid severe weather caused by a developing depression east of Japan.
