Hamburg Cargo Volumes at Record High
With total throughput of around 110 million tons, the Port of Hamburg set a new record in the first nine months of 2014. Almost all throughput segments contributed to a growth of 5.7 percent. Container handling, which dominates in Hamburg as a universal port, also achieved a record mark of 7.4 million TEU (20-ft standard containers). Gaining 6.4 percent here, Hamburg is growing faster than competing ports in Northern Europe. These reported average growth of 1.9 percent in total throughput and of 4 percent for container handling.
Port of Hamburg Continues Cargo Records, Adds Jobs
The Port of Hamburg continues record performance handling a total of 72.6 million tons (+ 6.6 percent) in the first six months of 2014. Hamburg’s universal port with 50.7 million tons of predominantly container handling achieves a result of 4.8 million TEU (20-ft standard containers), an increase of 6.8 percent. The largest seaports on the north European continent show an average growth in total handling of 1.8 percent and in container handling of 2.6 percent. The Port of Hamburg can look back on above average growth in container traffic, building up its market share from 25.7 to 26.7 percent.
Grimaldi Newbuild for Hamburg–West Africa Connection
Overnight from 25 to 26 September 2011, the GRANDE SIERRA LEONE docked at the Unikai terminal at the Port of Hamburg for the first time. It is the first sailing of the newbuild in the West Africa service operated by Grimaldi Lines. The GRANDE SIERRA LEONE joins the “Southern Express” service of the Grimaldi Lines, which now operates with a total of six ConRo ships and links Hamburg with the West African ports of Casablanca, Dakar, Conakry, Lome, Pointe Noire, Luanda and Douala. On the south-bound leg, the port rotation includes Amsterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Le Havre, Bilbao, Leixoes and Lisbon. The deployment of the GRANDE SIERRA LEONE allows Grimaldi to step up the frequency of departures to West Africa from ten to eight days.
