We are in the midst of a revolution over port infrastructure. This revolution is not about the role of ports as silent engines for our economy and the need for better intermodal infrastructure. The retirement of veteran Federal Maritime Commission senior executive Mr. Vern W. Hill, who has served as the Managing Director of the agency since 2013, has set in motion staff changes in three key offices. In consultation with his fellow Commissioners, Chairman Mario Cordero has appointed Ms. Karen V. Gregory to serve as the Commission’s Managing Director and Mr. Peter J. King to serve as the Deputy Managing Director. In their most immediate previous positions Ms. Gregory was the Secretary of the Federal Maritime Commission, while Mr. King was the Director of the Bureau of Enforcement. Both are members of the Senior Executive Service. Ms. Gregory and Mr. King begin their new roles today, September 1, 2016.

Gibbs & Cox, Inc. (G&C) Chairman Ned Daffan announced today the appointment of Chris Deegan as President and Chief Executive, effective immediately. Deegan, previously Vice President of G&C's Engineering Group, will replace Rick Biben, who is retiring but will remain on the G&C Board of Directors. Deegan spent nearly 28 years in the Navy's acquisition and cost engineering communities, leading nuclear submarine, ship and combat systems programs prior to joining Gibbs & Cox in 2013.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy Hosts 7th Annual Women on the Water Conference. Last week, The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in conjunction with the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) hosted the 7th Annual Women on the Water (WOW) Conference. The annual conference, which is hosted by a different U.S. maritime academy each year, brought together over 125 maritime professional mariners and maritime academy cadets. The three day conference began with opening remarks from Maritime Administrator Paul N. Jaenichen, Sr. He welcomed the audience of mostly women by thanking the attendees. The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command today announced an organization re-alignment designed to increase efficiency while maintaining effectiveness.
