Op/Ed: Marine Operators Should Care More About IT

I’ve had the good fortune to work with marine operators around the world, and one thing has become painfully apparent to me; most marine companies don’t appreciate the profound affect technology can have on their organizations. Information technology can save lives, increase profitability, improve customer satisfaction, and even keep you in business.Some may think this is crazy talk from a Kool-Aid drunk techy, or that I need a vacation, but I assure you, it’s modern reality.

Holland America Line & Seabourn names Kammerer is V.P

Mark Kammerer has been named vice president, international marketing and sales for Holland America Line and Seabourn. In this role, he will be responsible for the companies’ sales offices in the U.K., the Netherlands and Australia, as well as Holland America Line and Seabourn’s growing international business. Kammerer will report to Joe Slattery, Holland America Line’s senior vice president, global marketing and sales. “Mark brings incredible knowledge and experience to this position, and his expertise supports the continued growth in our international presence,” said Slattery. In his previous positions at Holland America Line, Kammerer was responsible for marketing and North American sales, as well as worldwide cruise marketing.

Holland America Line Promotes Christine Thurlow

Holland America Line has promoted Christine Thurlow to director of national accounts sales, North America, on the company’s National Accounts Sales team. Thurlow will report to Charles J. Dunwoody, CTC, senior director, national accounts, North America. In addition to her Canadian portfolio, she will take on Holland America Line and Seabourn sales responsibilities for Virtuoso, Signature Travel Network, Costco, Our Vacation Center, Expedia and Travelocity. “Christine has been with the company for many years and she’s continued to grow and evolve as her role has developed,” said Dunwoody. Thurlow joined Holland America Line in 1995 and has held various sales management positions during her tenure. Most recently she was manager of national accounts for Canada, a position she held since 2001.

Navy Movers to Gain From New ONR Transportation Tool

In a significant advance for military transportation, a new web-based tool sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) brings an Expedia-like search capability to Navy planners looking to move personnel or equipment around the world quickly and affordably. The Transportation Exploitation Tool (TET) is software that allows transportation planners to easily find available space among the thousands of military and commercial flights, and ship movements, that take place each day.

AAPA Cruise Seminar to Explore, Assess Industry Issues

The American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 2013 Cruise Seminar in San Francisco, April 24-26, will kick off with a candid look inside the cruise industry from the perspective of four key cruise line executives and end with a tour of the Port of San Francisco to see the impact of the America’s Cup on port operations. In between these bookend sessions, seminar participants will be treated to a host of presentations ranging from new international regulations on ship air emissions to itinerary planning, cruise facility design, financing and joint-use terminal opportunities.
