Denmark, South Korea Join for Green Shipping

The Danish Maritime Authority hosted the first meeting in the Danish-South Korean Green Ship Expert Committee (GSEC) yesterday (Jaunary 23).According to a note from Danish Maritime Authority, this collaboration originates from the strategic partnership between Denmark and South Korea that was formed during the 60-year anniversary (2011) for the dispatch of the hospital ship M/S JUTLANDIA.GSEC will set the framework for collaboration on new technology and sustainable solutions for shipping.Andreas Nordseth, Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority, said: “With the combination of expertise within shipping, ship building as well as development and production of maritime equipment, we are well matched to find solutions to the challenges of future shipping together.”

Rolls-Royce Wins Heyerdahl Award

Rolls-Royce has been awarded the maritime Heyerdahl Award 2014. The award was presented by His Majesty King Harald at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Associations Annual Conference in Oslo March 31. The award goes to the Environship Concept, an innovative ship design which integrates a highly efficient gas-based power and propulsion system with an innovative hull design to provide significant reductions in emissions. Several Companies Shortlisted for Heyerdahl Award

Solstad Offshore ASA, Rolls Royce Marine, Norled AS and Maersk Line have been shortlisted for the prestigious Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award 2014. The prize recognizes candidates from the shipping industry that have made an outstanding contribution to the environment. The award is presented to the winner by H.M. King Harald at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Annual Conference on March 31. The Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award was established in 1999 by Thor Heyerdahl (1914 – 2002) and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association.

Norwegian Shipowners’ Association Seeks Nominations for Heyerdahl Award

The semiannual Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award was launched in 1999 by Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002) and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association to recognizes candidates from the shipping industry that have made an outstanding contribution for the environment. To qualify for the award, candidates must have demonstrated exceptional technical innovation and environmental work in correspondence with Thor Heyerdahl’s spirit for the conservation of the marine environment. Emphasis will be placed on measures that combine environmental benefits with improved profitability. Individuals from academia, science, research institutes, governments, NGOs, media and the shipping industry are encouraged to nominate.

Finalists for Heyerdahl Award Announced

The Expert Committee announced a short list of two candidates for The Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award. This year the awarding ceremony takes place in Japan, host to EXPO-2005 under the theme Natur’s Wisdom. Candidates for Thor Heyerdahl Award Chosen

The committee for the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award has nominated shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the Norwegian-headed industry and research project FellowSHIP Project and the ProSea Foundation in Holland for this year’s Heyerdahl Award. The committee has now submitted the list of nominees to an award committee, which will choose this year’s winner. Nominees for Heyerdahl Award Announced

The Expert Committee today announced the Short List for the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award which will be presented on June 3 in Oslo, Norway, at the Nor-Shipping. The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Limited (ITOPF) is nominated for its world leading role in maritime environmental knowledge management and knowledge sharing. OptiMarin AS is nominated for their pioneering development of cost efficient ballast water treatment plants for shipboard installation. Norwegian shipowner company Eidesvik AS has developed the first offshore supply vessel to be powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). By introducing LNG as an alternative to marine diesel, the result will be an 85 percent reduction in the outlet of NOx, 20 percent CO2 and 100 percent SOx.
