Eagle Bulk CEO Gary Vogel Named CMA Commodore

Gary Vogel, chief executive officer of Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc., has been named as the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) Commodore for the year 2022.The 2022 Commodore Award, given each year to a person in the international maritime industry who has contributed to the growth and development of the industry, will be presented on March 31, at the Gala Dinner marking the conclusion of the annual Connecticut Maritime Association conference and expo, in Stamford, Conn..Vogel has served as CEO and director of Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. (NASDAQ: EGLE) since September, 2015.

Jury Weighing Question of Whether BP Exec Lied About 2010 Oil Spill

A U.S. federal jury has begun its deliberations on whether a former BP Plc  executive lied about how much oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico following the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig in April 2010. Prosecutors and a lawyer for defendant David Rainey made their closing arguments to the jury on Friday morning in a case brought by the government over statements Rainey made to agents from the FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) nearly a year after the spill. Rainey, BP's former vice president of exploration in the Gulf, faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison if found guilty of willfully making a fraudulent statement to federal law enforcement agents. The April 20, 2010, explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig led to 11 deaths and the largest U.S.

Informal Meeting Discussed Bulk Carrier Safety

An informal meeting invited to consider bulk carrier safety issues has agreed that the approach currently being taken within IMO is the right one at this juncture but that more work needs to be done to prevent continuing losses. The meeting convened by the Secretary-General of IMO, William O'Neil, at IMO Headquarters on Friday March 22, 2002, was attended by F. Tsao and R. Holt, Chairman and Secretary-General of INTERCARGO, respectively; Messrs. I. Ponomarev, R. Bradley and J. De Rose (Chairman of the IACS Council, Permanent Secretary and Permanent Representative of IACS to IMO, respectively); and members of the IMO Secretariat. The Chairman of IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC), Tom Allan, had also been invited but could not attend due to another commitment.

Keppel Corporation Elects Two Top Names To Board

Keppel Corporation Limited (KCL) has appointed Tony Chew Leong-Chee and Dr. Lee Tsao Yuan to its Board. Both Chew and Dr. Lee are no strangers to the Keppel Group,as they were Directors of Keppel Capital Holdings before it was sold in August last year. Statement from IMC on Selendang Ayu Incident

With deep regret, by late Friday night, IMC had formally accepted that the six seafarers who remain missing following the crash of a United States Coast Guard’s rescue helicopter must now be presumed dead. Peter Chew, Group Managing Director of IMC made a statement through the Joint Command Information Centre following the Coast Guard’s announcement that the Search and Rescue operation was halted by nightfall on Friday. IMC continues to mourn its missing men and is doing all it can for their families and loved ones. Frederick Chavalit Tsao, the IMC Chairman, arrived in Alaska on Saturday morning to see the crew of the Selendang Ayu and meet all involved in the emergency operations. On Sunday he was in Juneau to meet Admiral James C.

Shipowners, Shipbuilders and Classification Societies in Discussions

Important maritime industry discussions between shipowners, shipbuilders and classification societies concluded in Shanghai on November 9 with agreement on the need to maintain the debate with a view to ensuring safe and robust designs for the future and to enhance the quality of new ships. The discussions, coordinated by the Round Table of maritime associations - BIMCO, ICS, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO - and under the chairmanship of the INTERCARGO Chairman, Frederick Chavalit Tsao, continued an initial discussion held in February this year in Singapore. Delegates attending by invitation discussed their mutual interest in ensuring that ships were fit for purpose, the commercial realities in their respective market places and the interaction of their respective business concerns.
