Those who are old enough (or young enough) to remember Justin Timberlake’s poignant lyrics, ‘What goes around, goes around, goes around, comes all the way back around’, will appreciate their significance and relatability to the offshore oil and gas market. On that theme, it appears a vessel very close to my heart, the AHTS previously known as Sanko Energy (now Ena Shogun), has come 'all the way back around.'News is filtering through the market that Eastern Navigation (Singapore) has sold the vessel five years after purchasing it from Sanko Steamship in early 2017.So why does this vessel resonate with me? Well, from a professional perspective, it was my first analyst experience of a sale that went against everything established market experts thought about values and sale prices.

MAN Energy Solutions won a contract to supply individual MAN B&W ME-LGIP (Liquid Gas Injection Propane) dual-fuel engines to three 5,000-cubiic-meter-capacity liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers currently under construction by CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co., Ltd. (CIMC-SOE) in Shanghai for German shipping company Hartmann Gas Carrier.Each newbuilding will receive a propulsion package featuring one 5S35ME-LGIP engine with an Alpha controllable pitch propeller, power take-off (PTO) and propulsion control system (PCS).

German offshore industry service provider United Offshore Support (UOS) announced that it has completed its acquisition of the commercial and technical-nautical management businesses of both UOS United Offshore Support and Hartmann Offshore.Since the acquisition was announced in July 2018, the management and staff of both companies have been working to bring the two organisations under the UOS brand, which is based in Leer, Germany.UOS is led by Chief Executive Howard Woodcock, who joined the company in August 2018. Denmark-based shipping company Hafnia Tankers is exploring the possibility of consolidation with BW Tankers, part of BW Group, Hafnia’s CEO Mikael Skov said.In its half year results statement Hafnia said: “Hafnia is exploring the possibility of consolidation with BW Tankers, a company owned by BW Group, one of our shareholders.”BW Group increased its shareholdings in Hafnia in early July when it acquired BTS Tankers Partners LLC. With the acquisition, BW Group became the beneficial owner of 43.5% of the Hafnia Group.Last month, BW Group said it has entered into a definitive agreement to buy a 36.3% stake in Hafnia Tankers, a shipping company formed by the management team of former Tankers Inc.

Hartmann Reederei, the German ship-management company, has confirmed that two of its vessels – the 36,000 m3 LEG (liquefied ethylene gas) carriers Gaschem Beluga and Gaschem Orca – powered by the world’s first ME-GIE (-Gas Injection Ethane) two-stroke engines have collectively accumulated 10,000 hours of operations since entering operation at the end of 2017.The carriers were ordered by Hartmann and Ocean Yield of Norway, and constructed at Sinopacific Offshore Engineering (SOE)…

Oldendorff Carriers has recently increased the number of owned bulk carriers in it Babycape segment by acquiring four more eco 119,000 tonners from compatriot shipowner Hartmann Reederei. The vessels are: MV UBC Ottawa   (tbrn: Roland Oldendorff), MV UBC Odessa  (tbrn: Rex Oldendorff), MV UBC Olimbus  (tbrn: Redmer Oldendorff) and MV UBC Oristano (tbrn: Rik Oldendorff). These ships were built for Hartmann at Sinopacific Shipbuilding in 2011. The acquisitions will increase our total operated Babycape fleet to around 36 units, of which 10 will be fully owned. Oldendorff Carriers  has been able to build a network of trades, which can take advantage of the large capacity that these vessels offer on any draft.

The German Shipowners’ Association (VDR) welcomes the commitment of the EU Member States to the global climate protection strategy of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). VDR President Alfred Hartmann: “Our ships operate on the entire world's oceans; therefore, a global solution to reduce CO2 emissions is the only way to go. German shipowners are fully committed to the objective of the Paris climate agreement to limit global warming to below 2°C. The EU Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the Estonian Council Presidency have agreed not to include maritime shipping in the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) but to rely on the IMO’s global climate protection strategy.

Hartmann Group, the independent family-owned shipping company, announces the recapitalisation of an 11-strong fleet of Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels through a partnership with, and long-term investment from, Breakwater Capital and Hayfin Capital Management. Agreed with the financing banks on October 12 2017, the deal provides the fleet with immediate stability and the potential for growth. Following the deal, full ship management of the fleet remains with the former owners, Hartmann Group, with Hartmann Offshore continuing the technical-nautical operations and UOS (United Offshore Support) managing the commercial side. The fleet will operate under their current expedition names such as "Challenger" and "Columbia", with the prefix changed from UOS to GH.

A new liquefied ethylene gas carrier (LEG) was named on Teesside today. Operated by German shipping company Hartmann Reederei and GasChem Services, the new eco-friendly sea vessel GasChem Beluga will carry shipments of ethane gas from Houston to SABIC’s cracker at Wilton on Teesside under a long-term time charter. SABIC recently converted its Teesside cracker during a major investment to enable it to take ethane gas alongside other feedstocks, to make it one of the most flexible and competitive crackers in Europe.

The Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL) worked on 49 commercial vessels and 20 cruise ships throughout 2016, with scope of works ranging from major steel fabrication and repairs, to engine and technical systems overhauls, hull treatment and tank cleanings. And looking to 2017 and beyond, the yard reports it has a healthy order book, with docking periods secured as far ahead as three years. VShips USA brought two bulk carriers, CSL Acadian and CSL Argosy, to GBSL to do tank cleaning on both vessels. CSL Acadian also received extensive pipe work.

On November 11 the first vessel of the new ECO STAR 36k type, GasChem Beluga, was delivered to the owners Ocean Yield ASA in China. The design for this new type of vessel was developed under the lead of German ship owner Hartmann Reederei together with its long-term partners HB Hunte Engineering for the ship design and AC Inox delivering gas plant and equipment. The hull design is unique and highly efficient: The vessel’s superstructures are located at the bow, the engine at the stern, resulting in an excellent distribution of weight and a significant reduction of ballast water.

JHW has ordered five 85,000 m3 Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs) for a JACCAR/Hartmann Reederei joint venture, called UEC (United Ethane Carriers); each vessel will be powered by a single MAN B&W 6G60ME-GI main engine. Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Offshore Co. Ltd. (DSIC) will construct the vessels in China, while Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) will build the engines in Korea. MAN Diesel & Turbo’s G50 engine has successfully passed its Type Approval Test at Mitsui in Japan. Upon entering service, the engine will power the world’s first ethane-fuelled eco-friendly LEG (Liquefied Ethane Gas) carrier – the first of three such vessels to be built in China by SinoPacific Shipyard for the German shipowner, Hartmann Reederei. Besides operating on ethane, the flexible ME-GI engine will be able to operate on HFO, MDO and gas oil. Propulsion efficiency will be further improved by employing an MAN Kappel propeller with rudder-bulb system.

Alfa Laval’s new PureNOx Prime solution for water treatment in Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), will be part of EGR systems on five very large ethane carriers (VLECs) to be operated by United Ethane Carriers (UEC). This order from MAN Diesel & Turbo comes only a short time after PureNOx Prime was introduced to the market. UEC, a joint venture between Jaccar Holdings and Hartmann Group for the commercial management of ethane carriers, will be the operator of five VLECs to be built for ship owner JHW Engineering & Contracting.

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) has completed the world’s first ME-GIE ethane-operated two-stroke diesel engine. The engines will be for propulsion of three ethylene carriers, which will also carry ethane as cargo. The Mitsui-MAN B&W 7G50ME-C9.5-GIE is the first engine in a series of three for installation in three LEG (liquefied ethylene gas) carriers of 36,000 m3 for Hartmann Schiffahrt of Germany and Ocean Yield of Norway, being built at Sinopacific Offshore Engineering (SOE) in China. MAN Diesel & Turbo reports that ethane was chosen as fuel, in preference to HFO, due to its more competitive pricing as well as the significantly shorter bunkering time it entails.

In the Babycape segment, Oldendorff's London office usually operates around 30 vessels in its global network of trades. The company informed that it likes to have some owned vessels in every segment in which it operates to ensure more reliable and flexible service. The Babycape vessels were purchased from companies managed by Hartmann Reederei (Leer) and Thomas Schulte (Hamburg), and join three other Babycapes in the Oldendorff fleet which were  bought in summer 2016. The 119,000 tonners were built at Sinopacific, China and feature an attractive cargo intake at 14.5 m draft, Mewis fuel saving ducts, ballast water treatment systems, as well as Korean built B&W main engines and auxiliary engines. The Emma Schulte was delivered from Jiangnan, China in 2012.
