After more than 30 years of frustratingly slow progress, cost overruns and more than a few mistakes, Olmsted is finally poised for success. That’s something to celebrate.It is official: The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) wants Olmsted operational by October. After more than 30 years, the ribbon cutting to officially open the Olmsted Locks and Dam took place on August 30. The very old (1929) upstream locks and dams – Nos. 52 and 53, which Olmsted is replacing – will be dismantled by December 2020. Before that happens, Olmsted’s performance will be tested and confirmed.

Mammoet, a service provider specializing in engineered heavy lifting and transport, has lifted up a 120-meter-high crane for its installation in the port of Szczecin in Poland. The Goliath crane was built by Van Haagen Kraanbouw in the Netherlands and transported to the fabrication site of Bilfinger Mars Offshore. Mammoet constructed a tailor-made gantry with a height of 127 meters especially for this project – the tallest gantry ever built by the company in Europe – to execute this lifting operation. Gantries normally raise loads from an overhead beam between two supporting towers.

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. has bought the former Maritime Steel and Foundries Ltd. steel fabrication site in Dartmouth as part of its plans to gear up for the $25-billion dollar federal combat ship procurement contract, reports 'The Chronicle Herald'. According to documents filed with Property Online Nova Scotia, title to the 2.4-hectare site at 605 Windmill Rd. was transferred from Cameron Corporation Ltd. to Irving Shipbuilding in June. Citing Irving spokeswoman Mary Keith, 'The Chronicle Herald' reported that the company wouldn’t disclose the purchase price, which was rumoured to be about $13 million. According to a Nov. 10 report from CBC News, A major contract has been awarded to start work on Newfoundland and Labrador's Hebron offshore oil project. U.S. construction company Peter Kiewit has won a $70m contract for engineering and site preparation. The work will be done at Bull Arm fabrication site in eastern Newfoundland. Kiewit is sharing the work with Aker Solutions, and Exxon Mobil is leading the consortium to develop Hebron. (Source: CBC News)

Jumbo Shipping has completed a two-year project for the Pearl GTL project of Qatar Shell GTL Ltd. From 2007 to November 2009, 24 reactors of 1,200 tonnes each have been transported to the Port of Ras Laffan. With 28,800 tonnes of heavy metal, Jumbo Logistics and Jumbo Shipping made a solid contribution to the Pearl GTL project. Jumbo’s HLV Fairpartner transported 12, German-built, reactors from Rotterdam. Jumbo Logistics was contracted to execute a barging operation for 12 of the reactors, starting at the fabrication site in Hamriyah (U.A.E.).

Heavy transport shipping company Dockwise Shipping B.V. took delivery of the M/V Blue Marlin after her conversion into the world's largest semi-submersible heavy transport vessel able to carry heavy cargoes up to 73,000 tons. After a conversion of 3 months at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea the heavy transport vessel Blue Marlin has re-joined the Dockwise fleet with an increased deadweight capacity of 76,061 tons. The beam has been increased by 21 m, which results in an increased unobstructed deck area of 11,227 sq. m (63 m wide x 178.2 m long).

For the first time in the history of the inland navigation system, a dam floated. The Braddock Dam Segment One floated into place and set down on Dec. 7, mating underwater with 47 drilled shafts that make up the dam segment's foundation. Vertical and horizontal alignment of the segment came within one inch of the design. Segment One, the larger of two segments, is a reinforced concrete marine structure 330 ft. long and weighing 16,600 tons. On Dec. 5 towboats moved it from the project outfitting pier a mile-and-a-half upstream, then it was sunk in place. Underbase grouting filled the gap between the river bottom and underside of the dam segment.
