Maintenance Error Led to $3.8 Million Ferry Casualty in Washington -NTSB

An improperly tightened fastener led to a diesel engine failure on the passenger and car ferry Wenatchee near Bainbridge Island, Wash., resulting in nearly $3.8 million in damages, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said Tuesday.On April 22, 2021, the catastrophic failure of the no. 3 main engine aboard the Wenatchee during a sea trial in Puget Sound led to the ejection of components from the engine and resulted in a fire in the no. 2 engine room. New Dredges Enter Service in Bangladesh

DSC Dredge and Deep Diggers Ltd announced the launch of a new 18-inch Shark Class dredge manufactured in Bangladesh.In 2019 U.S.-based cutter suction dredge manufacturer DSC Dredge signed a memorandum of understanding with Deep Diggers Ltd, Bangladesh with a project focus of providing an engineering design and component package. Deep Diggers imported all the dredge components from DSC including the Caterpillar diesel engine, dredge pump, gearbox, cutter assembly, winches, hydraulic system and lever room and controls.

MSHS Named FPT's North America Distributor

FPT North America announced an exclusive partnership with marine distributor Motor-Services Hugo Stamp, Inc. (MSHS), an FPT distributor partner since 2005. Elcome Opens Calibration Lab and Repair Facility

Elcome International has established a new calibration lab and electronics component repair facility at its worldwide headquarters in Dubai. The calibration and electronics repair services are operated by Navicom Calibration LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Elcome. Navicom is providing a full range of calibration and certification services for critical portable instruments and fixed systems. The operation is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 by the Dubai Accreditation Center and the quality management systems are certified by DNV GL to ISO 9001:2008.

Elcome Scores Service Agreements in the Middle East

Marine technologies and system integrator Elcome International has signed fleet service agreements with two major ship operators in the Middle East, the company announced today. Elcome will provide shore-based maintenance and service for navigation, automation and electrical systems for 45 crude and product tankers operated by a Dubai-based shipping company under a three-year contract. The scope of work will include periodic inspections, performance and health checks, routine overhauling and repairs. In addition, Elcome has signed an annual maintenance agreement for navigation and communication systems for 20 ships operated by an Abu Dhabi-based shipping company.

Whale-watching Catamaran Repowered by Volvo Penta

When it came time to replace the old engines in his whale-watching vessel, Capt. Joe Nazar chose Volvo Penta and has enjoyed the benefits of improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, reduced noise levels and better performance ever since. Nazar’s 64-ft. catamaran, Kitty Kat, was retrofitted with a pair of Volvo Penta D11 625 diesel engines in April, replacing the existing 12-liter Tier 2 engines. The installation was performed at Bay Marine Boatworks in collaboration with Helmut’s Marine Service, an authorized Volvo Penta Power Center in San Francisco.

Danelec Marine Opens Distribution Hub in Denmark

Danelec Marine has opened a new European distribution center in Copenhagen. Managed by GEODIS, a global supply chain command company, the distribution center will carry a full range of Danelec Marine products and parts, including ECDIS, Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) and Simplified Voyage Data Recorders (S-VDRs). “The new distribution center will provide our European distribution and service partners with faster access to a full inventory of products,” said Hans Ottosen, CEO of Danelec Marine. Danelec Marine said it has taken major steps over the past year to expand and strengthen its global service capability, adding new Certified Service Centers and distributors in key locations around the world.

Royston Supports PSV Engine Parts Overhaul

Diesel engines specialist Royston has supported and completed the overhaul and maintenance of a range of engine components for a platform supply vessel (PSV) undergoing a scheduled service at Babcock’s Rosyth facility. A change in operating schedules for the E.R. Georgina required a fast four day turnaround of 24 sets of cylinder heads, piston and connector rod assemblies and bottom end bearing bocks that had been removed from the vessel as part of the maintenance of its Rolls Royce Bergen engines.

Liebherr Opens African Maritime Hub

Liebherr Maritime Cranes celebrated the grand opening of the new sales and service center in Durban, South Africa. The new African maritime hub was opened by a number of guests from the local industry and Liebherr representatives. Mainly as a result of the close cooperation with Transnet over the past few years, Liebherr-Africa (LAF) has decided to extend its activities and to establish a specialized maritime hub in Durban. Transnet operates more than 60 Liebherr cranes, 13 mobile harbor cranes, 31 ship to shore container cranes and 18 rubber tyre gantry cranes.

Danelec Marine Expands in Latin America

Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) supplier Danelec Marine today announced it is adding two new distributors in Brazil and Mexico to expand its distribution in Latin America. Telnav Telecomuniçacões Navais, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Indumar, based in Veracruz, Mexico, will take responsibility for sales and service of Danelec Marine’s suite of products, including VDRs, Simplified Voyage Data Recorders (S-VDRs) and electronic chart display and information systems. They will also provide shipboard annual performance tests for Danelec Marine VDRs and S-VDRs to meet IMO requirements. “The appointment of Telnav and Indumar is a key part of our strategy of broadening and upgrading our distribution network around the world,” said Hans Ottosen, CEO of Danelec Marine.

Intellian Debuts New VSAT Antenna

Intellian showed  itsnew v110GX 3-Axis Ku-band VSAT communications antenna at SMM 2012. Prepared for the upcoming Global Express (GX) Ka-band broadband service from Inmarsat, the 1m Intellian v110GX incorporates a dual-band, carbon fibre reflector and tuned radome for consistent service, whether operating on either Ku- or Ka- band. The high-gain precision carbon fiber reflector is designed to provide optimum performance on either Ku- or Ka- band. When converting the system the antenna reflector does not need to be changed and the RF section is mounted on a single modular chassis enabling quick conversion to Ka-Band operation without any system re-balancing. The new radome has been developed to ensure efficient operation on both bands and minimise signal loss of the radome itself.
